Summer of 2023 Dingo Vacations Adventure Index – The (Mostly) True Adventures of Lupe

What a year! Lupe’s Summer of 2023 kicked off right on time with a visit in early June to Albany Peak in the Laramie Mountains. Sadly, that was it for always wonderful Wyoming. Happily, Colorado was next on the Carolina Dog’s agenda this year where fabulous adventures awaited.

For the first time in 8 years, Lupe climbed, not one, but two 14’ers way down S in the amazing San Juan Mountains where an incredible amount of snow still existed in much of the high country. Lupe got caught in a mini-blizzard, met other adventurers on the Continental Divide Trail, and visited 6 Colorado county high points.

The American Dingo’s 1st Summer of 2023 Dingo Vacation ended with a foray into New Mexico, where she climbed Wheeler Peak, New Mexico, her 6th state high point. Then it was back home to South Dakota to meet new Cousin Dixie and prepare for her longest Dingo Vacation ever, a 58 day road trip clear to the Arctic Ocean in Canada, and on into Alaska!

The smoke from wildfires in the Yukon and Northwest Territories was unbelievable – worst air quality in North America. Alaska was drenched with rain. Through it all, the scenery, whenever visible, was fantastic – a never ending series of pristine lakes, rivers, mountains, and valleys all along the way. Lupe saw caribou, bears, foxes, and even a musk ox. In Anchorage, she finally met Steve Gruhn, editor of the Mountaineering Club of Alaska’s monthly newsletter, The Scree.
