In the summer of 2016, Lupe journeyed N all the way to the Yukon and Alaska for the very first time ever. Her adventures in those spectacular arctic lands were such fun, the American Dingo couldn’t wait to return in 2017!
This time around, Lupe not only revisited favorite places from her 2016 trip, but explored many new and different regions, too. The Carolina Dog climbed AB Mountain near Skagway, and subsequently pronounced herself the Most High Exalted Dingo of the Arctic Sisterhood. She took the International Falls trail crossing the border between Canada and Alaska to see beautiful waterfalls, wander among sparkling lakes, and glimpse glacier clad peaks.
Lupe crossed the Arctic Circle, and not only returned to the Brooks Range, but shattered her 2016 record for her farthest point N by going over Atigun Pass to see Alaska’s North Slope. She visited Deadhorse near the Arctic Ocean, where she took walks along the Sagavanirktok River, and later climbed Slope Mountain while still N of the Brooks Range.
Some of Lupe’s adventures were easy, like repeats of her favorite 2016 Last Mile North, subsequent Stroll to the North Slope Knoll, and walks along Cook Inlet and Kachemak Bay on the Kenai Peninsula. Some were challenging, like when an ocean of clouds swallowed Mount Saint George, she faced fog and snow looking for Lake Benchmark Mountain, and her “day” hike on the Reed Lakes trail to Lynx Peak took 25 hours.
Lupe spent 44 days on her 2017 Dingo Vacation to the Yukon & Alaska exploring some of North America’s wildest and most beautiful, yet easily accessible mountains, lakes, rivers, and coastlines. The Carolina Dog is pleased to be able to share them with you here, and hopes you will find inspiration and perhaps ideas for fabulous adventures of your own.
