{"id":9000,"date":"2017-02-14T08:10:05","date_gmt":"2017-02-14T15:10:05","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/adventuresoflupe.com\/?p=9000"},"modified":"2020-09-23T18:38:49","modified_gmt":"2020-09-24T00:38:49","slug":"black-hills-sd-expedition-no-190-peak-5846-peak-5880-peak-5840-2-6-17","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/adventuresoflupe.com\/?p=9000","title":{"rendered":"Black Hills, SD Expedition No. 190 &#8211; Peak 5846, Peak 5880 &#038; Peak 5840 (2-6-17)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Busy Carroll Creek Road (County Road No. 313) wasn&#8217;t a very good place to park, but would have to do.\u00a0 SPHP pulled as far\u00a0over on\u00a0the W\u00a0shoulder of the wide county road\u00a0as possible.\u00a0 With so much snow around, this was as good as it was going to\u00a0get for the G6.\u00a0 Lupe bounded out, eager\u00a0to begin her day of fun in the Black Hills\u00a0(9:59 AM, 49\u00b0F).<\/p>\n<p>Only 100 feet back to the N, Lupe reached the intersection with Fox Ridge Road.\u00a0 A short trek on Fox Ridge brought Lupe to her originally intended starting point at USFS Road No. 685.\u00a0 The road was unmarked and snowy.\u00a0 Fortunately, some vehicle with knobby tires had packed the snow down in a couple of tracks, making the\u00a0hike along the road a lot easier than it otherwise would have been.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_8962\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-8962\" style=\"width: 660px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-8962\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/IMG_3747-e1600907078351-768x1024.jpg?resize=660%2C880\" alt=\"\" width=\"660\" height=\"880\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/IMG_3747-e1600907078351.jpg?resize=768%2C1024&amp;ssl=1 768w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/IMG_3747-e1600907078351.jpg?resize=225%2C300&amp;ssl=1 225w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/IMG_3747-e1600907078351.jpg?resize=1152%2C1536&amp;ssl=1 1152w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/IMG_3747-e1600907078351.jpg?resize=1536%2C2048&amp;ssl=1 1536w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/IMG_3747-e1600907078351.jpg?w=1650&amp;ssl=1 1650w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/IMG_3747-e1600907078351.jpg?w=1320&amp;ssl=1 1320w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 660px) 100vw, 660px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-8962\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Lupe starts out on snowy USFS Road No. 685. Photo looks NW.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Lupe was about 5 miles SSW of Custer, SD.\u00a0 Her\u00a0mission on Expedition No. 190 was to climb 3 more <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.peakbagger.com\/climber\/climber.aspx?cid=2715\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Brian Kalet<\/a><\/strong><\/span> peaks.\u00a0 <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>Peaks<\/strong> <\/span><strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><a style=\"color: #ff0000;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.peakbagger.com\/peak.aspx?pid=69225\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">5846<\/a><\/span><\/strong>,<strong> <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><a style=\"color: #ff0000;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.peakbagger.com\/peak.aspx?pid=69223\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">5880<\/a><\/span> <\/strong>&amp;<strong> <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><a style=\"color: #ff0000;\" href=\"http:\/\/peakbagger.com\/peak.aspx?pid=69224\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">5840<\/a><\/span><\/strong> were all strung out along a line running roughly NW\/SE.\u00a0 None of them were in view yet.\u00a0 Lupe would have to follow USFS Road No. 685 more than 2 miles, just to reach the pass between Peaks 5846 &amp; 5880.<\/p>\n<p>With so much snow around, Lupe couldn&#8217;t easily go running off exploring the forest like she usually does.\u00a0 She tried a few times, but\u00a0bounding through snow almost up to her neck\u00a0was\u00a0hard work.\u00a0\u00a0Like SPHP, Lupe soon resigned herself to trudging along in the tire tracks on the road.\u00a0 She\u00a0alternated between leading and following, often pausing right in front of SPHP to sniff the air,\u00a0thereby forcing a temporary halt.<\/p>\n<p>SPHP tried switching tire tracks frequently to avoid trampling the Carolina Dog, but each time SPHP switched, Lupe switched, too.\u00a0 She wanted to be in the exact same tire track as SPHP.\u00a0 Sigh.\u00a0 Good thing there wasn&#8217;t any big rush.\u00a0 Between the snow and Dingo delays, Expedition No. 190 was off to\u00a0a leisurely start.<\/p>\n<p>After the first big bend in the road, Lupe was out of sight of any sign of civilization other than the snowy road going forward.\u00a0 A S breeze was blowing.\u00a0 The sky was blue with a few thin clouds.\u00a0 Despite the snow, at close to 50\u00b0F, this was a warm day for early February.\u00a0 The road hike was a nice one, winding mostly\u00a0SW through the forest.<\/p>\n<p>No. 685 gained elevation gradually for a while before leveling out.\u00a0 Eventually it started a long, slow decline into a valley.\u00a0 By now, Lupe could see part of the middle mountain, Peak 5880, ahead through the trees.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_8963\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-8963\" style=\"width: 660px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/IMG_3748.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-8963\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/IMG_3748-1024x768.jpg?resize=660%2C495\" alt=\"\" width=\"660\" height=\"495\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/IMG_3748.jpg?resize=1024%2C768&amp;ssl=1 1024w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/IMG_3748.jpg?resize=300%2C225&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/IMG_3748.jpg?resize=768%2C576&amp;ssl=1 768w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/IMG_3748.jpg?w=1651&amp;ssl=1 1651w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/IMG_3748.jpg?w=1320&amp;ssl=1 1320w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 660px) 100vw, 660px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-8963\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Peak 5880 was the first of Lupe&#8217;s objectives to come into view between the trees as she followed USFS Road No. 685. A saddle to the NW(R) appeared to lead over to the N high area where the true summit of Peak 5846 is located. Photo looks WNW.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Lupe went to the top of the snowy hillside, before crossing the saddle to the NW.\u00a0 The NE side of the saddle was full of snow, but the ground to the SW was largely snow-free.\u00a0 Unfortunately, a hazardous downed barbed wire fence\u00a0was in the saddle.\u00a0 SPHP lifted Lupe over it, but kept finding more barbed wire on the ground ahead.\u00a0\u00a0The barbed wire made this a dangerous place for Lupe!\u00a0 SPHP made her stay close.<\/p>\n<p>The N high area of Peak 5846 is irregularly shaped.\u00a0 The highest\u00a0ground is near the NE edge\u00a0of the mountain along a ridge leading NW.\u00a0\u00a0Right away, Lupe came to\u00a0a line of small cliffs along a narrow, rocky part of this ridge.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_8968\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-8968\" style=\"width: 660px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/IMG_3753.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-8968\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/IMG_3753-1024x768.jpg?resize=660%2C495\" alt=\"\" width=\"660\" height=\"495\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/IMG_3753.jpg?resize=1024%2C768&amp;ssl=1 1024w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/IMG_3753.jpg?resize=300%2C225&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/IMG_3753.jpg?resize=768%2C576&amp;ssl=1 768w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/IMG_3753.jpg?w=1651&amp;ssl=1 1651w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/IMG_3753.jpg?w=1320&amp;ssl=1 1320w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 660px) 100vw, 660px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-8968\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">As soon as she had crossed the saddle, Lupe reached these small cliffs along a narrow part of the rocky ridgeline ahead. At first, SPHP thought Lupe might have reached the true summit of Peak 5846 right here. Photo looks E.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Lupe went all the way down to the pass where she&#8217;d left USFS Road No. 685 earlier.\u00a0 She crossed the road a little SW of the high point of the pass, and began climbing from the NW\u00a0up to\u00a0the N ridge of <strong><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Peak<\/span> <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><a style=\"color: #ff0000;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.peakbagger.com\/peak.aspx?pid=69223\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">5880<\/a><\/span><\/strong>.\u00a0 The N face of the mountain was all forested, snowy, and fairly steep.\u00a0 As Lupe reached the N ridgeline, the terrain started leveling out, although Lupe continued to gain some elevation.<\/p>\n<p>Shortly after the slope of the\u00a0terrain decreased, Lupe made a\u00a0most interesting discovery.\u00a0\u00a0Proceeding S along the ridgeline, the American Dingo found tracks &#8211; really big tracks &#8211;\u00a0in the snow.\u00a0 These weren&#8217;t the normal deer, wild turkey or rabbit tracks that Lupe usually comes across.\u00a0 Not at all!\u00a0 Lupe sniffed very carefully &#8211; mountain lion!<\/p>\n<p>No doubt about it.\u00a0 A very big kitty was around here somewhere!\u00a0 The lion tracks looked fairly fresh,\u00a0perhaps only\u00a02 or 3\u00a0hours old.\u00a0 The lion had been heading S along this same N ridge.\u00a0 Lupe started following the mountain lion&#8217;s trail.<\/p>\n<p>Fortunately, the N ridge was short.\u00a0 To continue on to the summit of Peak 5880, Lupe soon needed to make a loop toward the E in order to stay on the high ground.\u00a0 The lion hadn&#8217;t gone this way.\u00a0 Lupe was disappointed when she had to quit following the lion, but SPHP thought\u00a0perhaps it was\u00a0best not to make\u00a0a mountain\u00a0lion&#8217;s acquaintance anyway.<\/p>\n<p>Lupe was still gaining elevation as she followed the ridge ESE.\u00a0\u00a0On her way, she came to a snowy clearing\u00a0where she had a good view off to the N.\u00a0 To the NW, she could see Twin Sisters again, poking up behind Peak 5846, where she had just been.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_8982\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-8982\" style=\"width: 660px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/IMG_3767.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-8982\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/IMG_3767-1024x768.jpg?resize=660%2C495\" alt=\"\" width=\"660\" height=\"495\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/IMG_3767.jpg?resize=1024%2C768&amp;ssl=1 1024w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/IMG_3767.jpg?resize=300%2C225&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/IMG_3767.jpg?resize=768%2C576&amp;ssl=1 768w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/IMG_3767.jpg?w=1651&amp;ssl=1 1651w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/IMG_3767.jpg?w=1320&amp;ssl=1 1320w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 660px) 100vw, 660px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-8982\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Mountain lion tracker Lupe on her way up <strong><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Peak<\/span> <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><a style=\"color: #ff0000;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.peakbagger.com\/peak.aspx?pid=69223\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">5880<\/a><\/span><\/strong>. The smaller distant hill straight up from Lupe may be <strong><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.peakbagger.com\/peak.aspx?pid=19810\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Medicine Mountain<\/a><\/span> <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">(6,878 ft.)<\/span><\/strong>. The darker, closer hill on the R may be <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.peakbagger.com\/peak.aspx?pid=55560\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Atlantic Hill<\/strong><\/a><\/span> <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>(6,393 ft.)<\/strong><\/span>. Photo looks SE.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The snow was nearly a foot deep on the densely forested hill.\u00a0 Lupe had no views of anything except\u00a0more forest from the true summit.\u00a0 She sniffed around the area for only 5 or 10 minutes.\u00a0 The day was wearing on.\u00a0 If\u00a0Lupe was still going to try to climb Peak 5440, as well, she needed to get going.<\/p>\n<p>Lupe retraced her route back to the NE high point, then turned ESE staying near the NE\u00a0edge of the mountain.\u00a0 An annoying barbed wire fence went this direction, too.\u00a0 SPHP had to help\u00a0Lupe across it several times.<\/p>\n<p>Lupe was now gradually losing elevation.\u00a0 She came to small cliffs at the ESE end of the ridge.\u00a0 However, the way was open to turn S.\u00a0 Lupe lost more elevation crossing a wide expanse of forest.\u00a0 A fair amount of deadfall timber in this area forced lots of little detours.<\/p>\n<p>By the time Lupe reached the last high point toward the S end of Peak 5880, she had seen 4 sets of mountain lion tracks, although only the first set had looked really fresh.\u00a0 At the S high point, Lupe was ready for another break.\u00a0 SPHP found a small snow-free spot among\u00a0a stand of little\u00a0pines.\u00a0 Lupe had more Taste of the Wild.\u00a0 SPHP wrapped her in the purple Columbia pullover again.\u00a0 After 10 or 15 minutes,\u00a0she was ready to continue onward.<\/p>\n<p>Following a ridge that\u00a0curved around to the SW, Lupe lost elevation steadily.\u00a0 The topo map showed a minor road ahead, and Lupe\u00a0reached it\u00a0at a saddle.\u00a0 This whole area was full of snow.\u00a0 Lupe crossed the road going S.\u00a0 The road was heading\u00a0ESE and about to lose elevation.\u00a0 Lupe plunged onward through the snowy forest,\u00a0trying to maintain elevation\u00a0up on the hillside.\u00a0 The terrain forced her SE.<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0topo map showed another\u00a0lower pass a short distance\u00a0ahead.\u00a0 Lupe successfully\u00a0maintained elevation until she reached the slope leading down to this second\u00a0pass.\u00a0 She found another road down here, and an intersection just to the E.\u00a0 Lupe left the roads, and\u00a0began her climb up the N ridge of <strong><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Peak<\/span> <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><a style=\"color: #ff0000;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.peakbagger.com\/peak.aspx?pid=69224\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">5840<\/a><\/span><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>At first, Lupe was climbing from the NW along a fairly steep snow-covered slope.\u00a0 She gained a couple hundred feet of elevation before the slope became more gradual and the ridgeline turned S.\u00a0 Higher up, Lupe came to a couple of halfway decent viewpoints along the way, but she didn&#8217;t linger long this late in the day.<\/p>\n<p>Lupe reached the true summit of Peak 5840 at a junction of three ridges.\u00a0 The summit area was much smaller than on Peaks 5846 &amp; 5880, but had plenty of room to move around.\u00a0 Once again,\u00a0forest prevented Lupe from getting more than a glimpse of\u00a0any distant views from the top of the mountain.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_8987\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-8987\" style=\"width: 660px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/IMG_3772.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-8987\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/IMG_3772-1024x768.jpg?resize=660%2C495\" alt=\"\" width=\"660\" height=\"495\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/IMG_3772.jpg?resize=1024%2C768&amp;ssl=1 1024w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/IMG_3772.jpg?resize=300%2C225&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/IMG_3772.jpg?resize=768%2C576&amp;ssl=1 768w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/IMG_3772.jpg?w=1651&amp;ssl=1 1651w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/IMG_3772.jpg?w=1320&amp;ssl=1 1320w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 660px) 100vw, 660px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-8987\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Lupe stands at the true summit of Peak 5840, completing her 3rd successful Brian Kalet peak ascent of the day! footsteps.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Upon reaching the summit of Peak 5840, Lupe had successfully concluded her mission to climb 3 more Brian Kalet peaks today.\u00a0 Even though the sun was getting quite low by now, she still had\u00a0a little\u00a0time to relax up on top of the mountain.\u00a0 SPHP put the purple Columbia pullover back around her to keep her warm while she rested.<\/p>\n<p>Lupe Photo looks NE using the telephoto lens.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>There wasn&#8217;t time enough left in the day for Lupe to retrace her original route to Peak 5840 back over Peak 5880, and then back along USFS Road No. 685.\u00a0 When Lupe reached the pass N of Peak 5840, she turned NE following USFS Road No. 308.1F (Reservoir Road).<\/p>\n<p>SPHP was surprised when No. 308.1F quickly led Lupe into a residential area.\u00a0 The road eventually took Lupe N of these homes before winding NE through the forest again.<\/p>\n<p>The light of day was fading, and so was No. 308.1F, by the time Lupe reached Carroll Creek Road.\u00a0 SPHP was glad No. 308.1F hadn&#8217;t disappeared entirely in the dark forest.\u00a0 The short cut back to Carroll Creek Road had worked!\u00a0\u00a0Lupe had saved\u00a0a lot of time and distance.<\/p>\n<p>Lupe&#8217;s adventures on Black Hills, SD Expedition No. 190 were almost over.\u00a0 Together, Lupe and SPHP started the 1.5 mile trek N along Carroll Creek Road back to the G6.\u00a0 As stars began to appear overhead, Lupe and SPHP wondered if somewhere up on Peak 5880, a\u00a0giant cat was beginning its nightly prowl?\u00a0 (5:41 PM,
