{"id":900,"date":"2015-06-09T15:06:19","date_gmt":"2015-06-09T21:06:19","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/adventuresoflupe.com\/?p=900"},"modified":"2019-03-16T11:40:17","modified_gmt":"2019-03-16T17:40:17","slug":"warren-peaks-wy-7-15-14-porphyry-peak-mt-7-16-14","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/adventuresoflupe.com\/?p=900","title":{"rendered":"Warren Peaks, WY (7-15-14) &#038; Porphyry Peak, MT (7-16-14)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>SPHP came to at 6:15 AM on July 15, 2014.\u00a0 A very late beginning for Lupe&#8217;s 2014 Dingo Vacation to the Canadian Rockies!\u00a0 Despite the occasion, SPHP just felt lazy and spent another half an hour summoning the energy to roll out of bed.\u00a0 In truth, SPHP felt somewhat unprepared.\u00a0 Other than go to the Canadian Rockies, SPHP really didn&#8217;t have any specific idea what was going to happen over the next few weeks.\u00a0 Unlike SPHP, Lupe was bright-eyed, expectant and\u00a0ready for action!<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_902\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-902\" style=\"width: 660px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/SDC11632.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-902\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/SDC11632-1024x768.jpg?resize=660%2C495\" alt=\"Lupe waits in the G6 for SPHP to get a move on! Dingo vacations are supposed to get off to an early start!<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The house and yard were in as good shape as they were going to be, and the G6 was half packed the previous evening.\u00a0 At 8:00 AM, Lupe got her heartworm medicine.\u00a0\u00a0At 9:40 AM the G6 was finally rolling out of the driveway.\u00a0 It was hazy out and a rather cool day for mid-July.\u00a0\u00a0Lupe and SPHP headed W on I-90.\u00a0 All day it\u00a0felt like weather was building up\u00a0farther to\u00a0the W where Lupe was going.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_903\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-903\" style=\"width: 660px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/SDC11633.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-903\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/SDC11633-768x1024.jpg?resize=660%2C880\" alt=\"Now we're talking! Lupe arrives at the lookout tower on Warren Peaks.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Lupe&#8217;s first stop was a little side trip up to <a href=\"http:\/\/peakbagger.com\/peak.aspx?pid=6221\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Warren Peaks<\/span><\/strong><\/a> <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>(6,650 ft.)<\/strong><\/span> in the Bear Lodge mountains in NE Wyoming.\u00a0 Warren Peaks\u00a0became Lupe&#8217;s first peakbagging success of her 2014 Dingo Vacation to the Canadian Rockies &amp; Beartooths.\u00a0 It didn&#8217;t seem like much of an achievement, since a road goes all the way up to the lookout tower and SPHP just drove the G6 up there.\u00a0 Still, the view was pretty, and just being up there further\u00a0lifted SPHP&#8217;s rising enthusiasm for the glorious days ahead that were now just beginning.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_904\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-904\" Peaks at 11:35 AM, but it was 81\u00b0F by the time Lupe reached the Powder River two hours later.\u00a0 Things cooled off again just E of the Bighorn Mountains where Lupe encountered the first rain shower of the day.\u00a0 The rain was harder and steadier in Montana.\u00a0 At Billings, MT, SPHP was glad to leave I-90 and all its road construction.\u00a0 Lupe headed N on Hwy 3 to Lavina and turned W on Hwy 12 following the Musselshell River.<\/p>\n<p>W of Harlowton, Hwy 12 goes up into the Little Belt Mountains.\u00a0 Neither Lupe nor SPHP had ever been\u00a0to the Little Belts\u00a0before.\u00a0 Lupe saw lots of pretty country on this day&#8217;s drive, but other than the glorious Bighorn Mountains which Lupe didn&#8217;t enter, the Little Belt Mountains were the best.\u00a0 The Little Belts were gently rolling and forested with\u00a0meadows in the valleys.\u00a0 They were quite beautiful and sparsely populated.\u00a0 Lupe and SPHP turned N on Hwy 89 just\u00a0N of White Sulphur Springs, and\u00a0went\u00a0as far as a big parking pullout up at King&#8217;s Hill Pass (7,393 ft. elevation).<\/p>\n<p>By the time Lupe reached King&#8217;s Hill Pass, the sun was close to setting.\u00a0 SPHP parked the G6.\u00a0 For 45 minutes Lupe got to romp around in the wet woods while SPHP explored a bit too.\u00a0 It felt good to be out of the G6 and moving, but with all the clouds around, darkness started coming on fast.\u00a0 Soon after retiring to the G6 for the night, rain and fog rolled in.<\/p>\n<p>By morning on July 16th, the skies were clear.\u00a0 The first order of business was for Lupe to climb <strong><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"http:\/\/peakbagger.com\/peak.aspx?pid=53651\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Porphyry Peak<\/a> <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">(8,192 ft.)<\/span><\/span><\/strong>, which was a couple of miles W of Hwy 89 at King&#8217;s Hill\u00a0Pass according to the map.\u00a0 Lupe and SPHP started up a road that skirted the S side of the King&#8217;s Hill Campground.\u00a0 Lupe dashed around in and out of the wet forest, very pleased with the way this day was starting out.\u00a0 Soon she was a very soggy doggie, but it didn&#8217;t bother her in the least.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_907\" dingo vacation.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The road wound around all the way up to the summit of Porphyry Peak where there was a lookout tower\u00a0plus a couple of\u00a0ski lifts and a few other facilities connected with the <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"http:\/\/showdownmontana.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Showdown Montana<\/a><\/strong><\/span> Ski area.\u00a0 A sign at the bottom of the lookout tower said to shout for permission to climb the tower.\u00a0 SPHP shouted, but there was no answer.\u00a0 The tower went unclimbed by Lupe and SPHP.\u00a0 The views were pretty nice even without climbing the lookout tower.\u00a0 After wandering around the top of the mountain by the ski lifts where the views were best, Lupe and SPHP headed back down to the G6.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_908\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-908\" style=\"width: 660px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a elevation for many miles.\u00a0 It was a pretty drive, and SPHP was convinced the Little Belt Mountains are the most scenic route through this part of Montana.\u00a0 Near the bottom of the range was a picnic area close to a little creek.\u00a0 SPHP stopped there long enough for Lupe to sniff around a bit and get a drink.\u00a0 Then it was back in the G6 and onward to Great Falls, MT.<\/p>\n<figure farther W were in a haze, which eventually proved to be smoke.\u00a0 SPHP stayed on Hwy 89 all the way through Choteau and Browning to St. Mary just E of Glacier National Park.\u00a0 It was all new territory to both Lupe and SPHP.\u00a0 Lupe happily barked at\u00a0cows and horses along the way.\u00a0 In Choteau was a pretty neat statue of a dinosaur.\u00a0 Later on, SPHP regretted not stopping SPHP took Hwy 2 N to Hwy 12, which led Lupe to the Canadian border.\u00a0 At the drive up window, there was no one else in line to get into Canada.\u00a0 SPHP presented a U.S. passport and the Canadian border agent asked a bunch of standard questions.<\/p>\n<p>SPHP must have been somehow suspicious, or perhaps it was just a\u00a0dull, boring day on the border.\u00a0 SPHP was asked to park the G6 and go inside the main building while Lupe waited in the car.\u00a0 There SPHP presented the exact same passport,\u00a0different Canadian border patrol personnel asked the exact same questions, and\u00a0SPHP gave\u00a0the exact same answers.\u00a0 Somehow this cleared up all difficulties or misunderstandings, whatever they may have been,\u00a0and Lupe was free to proceed into beautiful
