{"id":8289,"date":"2017-01-13T08:10:30","date_gmt":"2017-01-13T15:10:30","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/adventuresoflupe.com\/?p=8289"},"modified":"2021-02-21T15:27:56","modified_gmt":"2021-02-21T22:27:56","slug":"black-hills-sd-expedition-no-187-new-years-eve-peak-12-30-16","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/adventuresoflupe.com\/?p=8289","title":{"rendered":"Black Hills, SD Expedition No. 187 &#8211; New Year&#8217;s Eve Peak (12-30-16)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A few miles S of Pactola Reservoir, SPHP parked the G6 at the junction of Hwy 385 and USFS Road No. 710 (11:55 AM, 50\u00b0F).\u00a0 Lupe was early, a whole day early.\u00a0 The weather dictated her timing.\u00a0 It was 50\u00b0F out!\u00a0 Tomorrow would be 15\u00b0F cooler, and New Year&#8217;s Day colder yet.\u00a0 No sense\u00a0waiting another day, only\u00a0to suffer in the cold, when this afternoon was going to be so nice!<\/p>\n<p>Lupe and SPHP set off following USFS Road No. 710.\u00a0 At least 6&#8243; of snow was down here in the shadow of Peak 5800.\u00a0 The snowy road went W for nearly a mile up a long draw.\u00a0 Other than a few animal tracks, the snow was pristine.\u00a0 No one comes here this time of year.\u00a0 Lupe ran sniffing around in the forest.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.peakbagger.com\/peak.aspx?pid=-38801\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">New Year&#8217;s Eve Peak<\/a><\/span> <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">(6,046 ft.)<\/span><\/strong> was Lupe&#8217;s destination.\u00a0 The mountain&#8217;s name is a private one.\u00a0 Officially, no name is shown\u00a0on the maps.\u00a0 Lupe was on her 4th trip to the mountain.\u00a0 She had first climbed it on the last day of 2012, which was how it got it&#8217;s name.\u00a0 Two years later, she returned on the last day of 2014.\u00a0 Since then, climbing New Year&#8217;s Eve Peak on or close to the last day of each year has become a Lupe tradition.<\/p>\n<p>The scenic part of the journey starts as USFS Road No. 710 reaches the upper end of the long draw, and\u00a0enters a thin forest of tall pines.\u00a0 The road starts to curve S here.\u00a0 Soon there are views of open country ahead.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_8254\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-8254\" style=\"width: 660px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/IMG_3623.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-8254\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/IMG_3623-1024x768.jpg?resize=660%2C495\" alt=\"\" width=\"660\" height=\"495\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/IMG_3623.jpg?resize=1024%2C768&amp;ssl=1 1024w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/IMG_3623.jpg?resize=300%2C225&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/IMG_3623.jpg?resize=768%2C576&amp;ssl=1 768w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/IMG_3623.jpg?w=1651&amp;ssl=1 1651w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/IMG_3623.jpg?w=1320&amp;ssl=1 1320w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 660px) 100vw, 660px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-8254\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Lupe on USFS Road No. 710 as it reaches the thin forest of tall pines at the upper end of the draw. The higher hill is privately known as Pistol Point. Frozen Sheridan Lake is on the R, with <strong><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.peakbagger.com\/peak.aspx?pid=38377\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Calumet Ridge<\/a><\/span> <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">(5,601 ft.)<\/span><\/strong> beyond it.
