Days 8\u00a0and 9 of Lupe’s Summer of 2016 Dingo Vacation to the Canadian Rockies, Yukon & Alaska<\/em><\/p>\n

That guy at the Bell 1 rest area yesterday evening had been right.\u00a0 There were bears in these woods!\u00a0 As Lupe and SPHP rolled N along Cassiar Highway No. 37 early on August 6th, Lupe saw 7 bears near the road in a span of 1.5 hours.\u00a0 Each bear was cause for a ferocious barkfest – from the safety of the G6, of course –\u00a0as Lupe sped on by.<\/p>\n

Day 8 of Lupe’s summer of 2016 Dingo Vacation was going to be a travel day.\u00a0 SPHP drove.\u00a0 Lupe looked out the window watching for wildlife.\u00a0 After the bears, though, no wildlife appeared.\u00a0 Lupe got bored and snoozed.<\/p>\n

Cassiar Highway No. 37 went past beautiful mountains and lakes.\u00a0 It crossed scenic rivers.\u00a0 The forest never ended.\u00a0 Even now, in 2016, with 7.5 billion people on the planet, Lupe really was\u00a0in an unbelievably\u00a0vast, uninhabited land.\u00a0 The narrow strip of highway was the only link to civilization.\u00a0 Everything else was unspoiled wilderness.\u00a0 It all hardly seemed possible.\u00a0 It felt\u00a0like going back in time.\u00a0 Columbus may have landed in the Americas almost 524 years ago, but along\u00a0the Cassiar Highway\u00a0there were still\u00a0few visible consequences.<\/p>\n

The hours and miles went by.\u00a0 There was traffic on Cassiar Highway No. 37, more than SPHP expected.\u00a0 Most of it was big trucks.\u00a0 Civilization may not have made much of a dent yet, but it is coming soon, even here.<\/p>\n

For hundreds of miles, Cassiar Highway No. 37\u00a0had been good\u00a0pavement, but N of the Bell 2 rest stop the road deteriorated.\u00a0 Rough, broken, patchy pavement appeared.\u00a0 Stretches of very dusty gravel became common.\u00a0 N of the tiny community of Dease Lake, the road turned to gravel for a long way.\u00a0 SPHP feared the Cassiar Highway might be\u00a0nothing but dust from\u00a0here on, but Lupe hit pavement again after 25 miles or so.\u00a0 The worst was over.\u00a0 Gradually, the Cassiar Highway improved again.<\/p>\n

Now and then Lupe and SPHP stopped for short breaks.\u00a0 At least, they were supposed to be short.\u00a0 At the Beaver Dam rest stop, SPHP was so weary of driving that 15 minutes of shuteye unintentionally turned into nearly 2 hours of unconsciousness.<\/p>\n

On the road again, SPHP felt better.\u00a0 Unconsciousness has its benefits!\u00a0 Lupe wasn’t far now from 2 major milestones on her journey.\u00a0 Suddenly, up ahead, there it was!\u00a0 A much anticipated sign was up on an embankment near the road.\u00a0 Lupe just had to stop for this!<\/p>\n

Lupe had made it to the Yukon!\u00a0 It was hard to believe she was really here.\u00a0 A relatively short drive N of the Yukon border brought Lupe to the next big milestone of the day.\u00a0 Lupe’s long journey on Cassiar Highway No. 37 was over.\u00a0 She had reached the Alaska Highway!\u00a0 Lupe and SPHP turned W, heading for Whitehorse.<\/p>\n

The afternoon wore on.\u00a0 It was a long way to Whitehorse, hundreds of miles.\u00a0 Evening came.\u00a0 Nearing Teslin Lake, there was a bit of\u00a0Dingo excitement when Lupe saw\u00a0her 8th black bear of the day.\u00a0 Lupe didn’t make it to Whitehorse.\u00a0 Day 6 ended\u00a0for Lupe W of Teslin Lake.\u00a0 Time to stop for the night.<\/p>\n

The next morning, Lupe did make it to Whitehorse, the capital city of the Yukon.\u00a0 She didn’t stay long, though. \u00a0Lupe was\u00a0on her way to her first mountain climbing adventure in the Yukon, instead!<\/p>\n

Although there had been mountains much of the way along the Alaska Highway, Lupe first caught sight of the higher, more rugged peaks of the Saint Elias Range approaching Haines Junction.<\/p>\n

At Haines Junction, Lupe and SPHP left the Alaska Highway, turning S on Hwy 3 to Haines.\u00a0 Lupe wasn’t going all the way to Haines.\u00a0 Her objective was only 17 miles away now.\u00a0\u00a0About halfway there, SPHP saw a mountain to the SSW resembling a long high wall.\u00a0 Was that it?\u00a0 It looked incredibly steep!\u00a0 SPHP’s heart sank.\u00a0 Would Lupe be able to climb anything like that?<\/p>\n

The realization quickly grew that the N end of the mountain wall really was Lupe’s objective!\u00a0 Well, there was supposed to be a trail, or at least a route, to the top.\u00a0 It had taken hours to get here, and was already late in the morning.\u00a0 No time to second guess things, Lupe would just have to try it and see how things went.<\/p>\n

A short drive from\u00a0a turn off Hwy 3 brought Lupe\u00a0to the Cottonwood Trailhead.\u00a0 SPHP parked the G6.\u00a0 Ten minutes later\u00a0(10:32 AM, 63\u00b0F), Lupe was on the Cottonwood Trail.\u00a0 The first part of the trail was quite level and followed a road through a shady forest.\u00a0 Up ahead was Lupe’s mighty objective – King’s Throne Peak<\/b><\/a><\/span> <\/b>(6,529 ft.)<\/b>.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

About a mile from the trailhead, Lupe came to an intersection.\u00a0 The Cottonwood Trail headed NW on its way past Kathleen Lake.\u00a0 It is ultimately part of an 87 km\u00a04-6 day backpacking loop.\u00a0 Lupe took the King’s Throne trail instead.\u00a0 The single track\u00a0trail began to climb steeply.<\/p>\n

At first, the trail was switchbacking up through forest, and Lupe couldn’t see much.\u00a0 Eventually, though, Lupe\u00a0got above tree line.\u00a0 The views of Kathleen Lake to the N\u00a0were already fabulous!<\/p>\n

King’s Throne Peak\u00a0is clearly named for the giant cirque which faces NNE.\u00a0 The cirque is the seat of the throne, with the high ridges wrapping around it\u00a0serving as the throne’s arms and back.\u00a0 It really is pretty easy to imagine the mountain serving as the throne of a titan-sized king.<\/p>\n

Evidently the giant cirque is the\u00a0ultimate destination for many hikers, and they go no farther.\u00a0 As described in Kluane National Park literature, the King’s Throne trail goes only as far as the cirque.\u00a0 Elevation gain from Kathleen Lake required to reach the cirque is\u00a0about 1,800 feet.<\/p>\n

Down in the forest below, it had been a nice calm\u00a0day, but as\u00a0Lupe approached the giant cirque, it was starting to get pretty windy out.\u00a0 The American Dingo is no great fan of wind, but she had no choice but to put up with it.<\/p>\n

Just getting to this giant cirque is the ultimate objective of many hikers. Several turned around here while Lupe was in the area, encouraged by the wind to do so. Photo looks SSW.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

Lupe and SPHP weren’t the only ones on the King’s Throne trail.\u00a0 Quite a few other hikers were around.\u00a0 Some of them turned around at the giant cirque, satisfied with the grand view of Kathleen Lake and being able to say they had hiked King’s Throne trail, which officially ends here.<\/p>\n

Of course, Lupe was going onward!\u00a0 Kluane National Park literature describes the rest of the way up to King’s Throne summit as a “route” rather than a “trail”, because it isn’t officially maintained.\u00a0 The first part of the route was every bit as good as the official trail had been.\u00a0 It climbed toward the steep NE ridge of the mountain.<\/p>\n

When the route reached the steep NE ridge, it turned and worked its way almost straight up it.\u00a0 For a while there was some grass around.\u00a0 Later on it was all rock.\u00a0 The ridgeline\u00a0became increasingly\u00a0narrow.\u00a0 Most of the time, the trail was a bit to the E of the ridgeline.\u00a0 Off to the W, on the side of the ridge toward the giant cirque, were increasingly fearsome cliffs.<\/p>\n

The NE ridge was hard going.\u00a0 The route was either loose rocks or very hard packed soil difficult to maintain traction on.\u00a0 Hiking poles would have been an enormous help, but SPHP had none.\u00a0 Even some of the bigger rocks Lupe passed by at certain points were often crumbly, loose and rotten.\u00a0 Everything had to be tested.<\/p>\n

The Carolina Dog had no problems, except for the wind.\u00a0 She hated it!\u00a0 As Lupe gained elevation, it swirled more and more violently around the ridgeline.\u00a0 SPHP joined Lupe on all fours, and virtually crawled up the mountain.\u00a0 Just trying to stand up and maintain balance was scary.\u00a0 The wind attacked first from one direction, then suddenly reversed and blew just as strongly from a completely different one.<\/p>\n

Fortunately, it wasn’t cold out, which would have been unbearable in this wind.\u00a0 Still, the wind was taking a toll.\u00a0 People were coming down the mountain.<\/p>\n

Most had simply turned around, having decided it wasn’t worth it in this gale.\u00a0 Among them Lupe saw\u00a0climbers who had passed SPHP on the\u00a0way up.\u00a0 A few groups who had left earlier in the day\u00a0had\u00a0succeeded in reaching\u00a0the summit.\u00a0 They reported even windier conditions there.\u00a0 Looking down, climbers who had been gaining on Lupe and SPHP could no longer be seen.\u00a0 They had turned around, too.<\/p>\n

Lupe kept climbing.\u00a0 Finally, a group of four guys appeared coming down the route.\u00a0 They had foreign accents and seemed very experienced.\u00a0 They too, reported very windy conditions at the summit, which they had successfully attained.\u00a0 They were the last people Lupe saw the rest of the day.\u00a0 Lupe and SPHP were alone on the mountain.<\/p>\n

Lupe still had a ways to go\u00a0up the steep NE ridge.\u00a0 Lupe pressed on.\u00a0 At last, she reached the end.\u00a0 She\u00a0came upon\u00a0a broad rocky plain which was almost level by comparison.\u00a0 The difficult part of the climb was over.\u00a0 The rest of the way to the summit would be much easier!<\/p>\n

Wow,\u00a0was it\u00a0ever windy here, though!\u00a0 SPHP wouldn’t let Lupe\u00a0get too close to\u00a0the cliffs\u00a0above the giant cirque for fear the Carolina Dog would sail right over the edge.\u00a0 For a few minutes, SPHP could only stand in one place.\u00a0 Taking a step was nearly impossible.<\/p>\n

After a few minutes, a\u00a0slight lull in the wind allowed SPHP to move again.\u00a0 For a little while, that was how it went.\u00a0 When the wind blew hardest, SPHP had to stand stock still, ready to crouch, if necessary.\u00a0 When there was a lull, progress resumed.\u00a0 Maybe it would be less windy away from the edge of the giant cirque?<\/p>\n

It was!\u00a0 Away from the cliffs, the wind was noticeably weaker.\u00a0 Lupe and SPHP were on the move again.\u00a0 Lupe headed W toward the S side of a rounded high point\u00a0where a saddle led over\u00a0to the next peak to the S.<\/p>\n

Maybe it was White Dingo Magic, but contrary to reports from climbers who had been here earlier, the wind was getting weaker,\u00a0not worse!\u00a0 Lupe worked her way\u00a0up and over\u00a0a high point, and turned NW toward the King’s Throne summit.\u00a0\u00a0The reduced wind speed\u00a0was a welcome relief.<\/p>\n

Lupe and SPHP were making good time now.\u00a0 Even before Lupe reached King’s Throne summit, glorious sights came into view to the W.<\/p>\n

By the time Lupe reached the summit of King’s Throne Peak, the wind had died down to just a breeze.\u00a0 Lupe and SPHP were free to really enjoy the stupendous views in every direction!<\/p>\n

On the NE side of the summit,\u00a0the air was\u00a0almost calm.\u00a0 SPHP sat down out of the wind\u00a0to rest\u00a0while taking in the magnificent views.\u00a0 Lupe curled up in SPHP’s lap.\u00a0 Lupe got petted and praised for bringing SPHP to such a wonderful place.\u00a0 The Carolina Dog\u00a0seemed to enjoy every moment.<\/p>\n

One\u00a0distant peak Lupe could see was of particular interest.\u00a0 The steep top of Mount Decoeli<\/a><\/span> (7,650 ft.)<\/span><\/strong> was faintly in view to the NW far beyond Kathleen Lake.\u00a0 Mount Decoeli was on the short list of peaks in Kluane National Park that SPHP hoped Lupe might be able to climb.<\/p>\n

However,\u00a0Mount Decoeli\u00a0looked every bit as steep as the NE ridge coming up King’s Throne Peak.\u00a0 Clearly, Decoeli would be a huge challenge.\u00a0 SPHP gazed at Decoeli filled with both hope and doubt.\u00a0 Would Lupe ever be on top of that daunting mountain?<\/p>\n

Lupe and SPHP lingered\u00a0at the summit of\u00a0King’s Throne Peak for more than 45 minutes.\u00a0 Conditions were great, and the views were awe-inspiring.\u00a0 Lupe would have stayed much longer, but she had gotten a late morning start, and it had taken a very\u00a0long time for SPHP to climb, crawl and stagger all the way to the top.<\/p>\n

The time came when Lupe had to think about starting down.\u00a0 She returned to\u00a0the King’s Throne\u00a0summit cairn for a final look.\u00a0 SPHP took another round of photos.\u00a0 After all the effort expended to get here, it was hard to think about leaving\u00a0already to face\u00a0the steep, windy NE ridge again.<\/p>\n

The relative calm Lupe experienced on top of King’s Throne summit did not prevail elsewhere, although the wind wasn’t as bad as it had been earlier in the day.\u00a0 Lupe and SPHP made good time on the route back until reaching the steep NE ridge.<\/p>\n

Going down the NE ridge,\u00a0the wind\u00a0was still strong and unpredictable.\u00a0 The terrain was so steep, the footing so unreliable, and the swirling wind so unnerving that SPHP became extraordinarily slow and cautious.\u00a0 SPHP crawled, slid, and took baby steps\u00a0down the mountain.\u00a0 Lupe became so impatient with SPHP, the were-puppy attacked repeatedly to encourage some movement.<\/p>\n

This was taking forever!\u00a0 The sun was long gone.\u00a0 The\u00a0creeping Yukon twilight slowly faded.\u00a0 Yet the sweeping views of the desolate mountains\u00a0of the far\u00a0N were\u00a0chillingly inspiring.\u00a0 Thousands of feet below, whitecaps could be seen on Kathleen Lake.<\/p>\n

Even the official King’s Throne trail below the giant cirque seemed steeper and more\u00a0difficult than SPHP remembered.\u00a0 By now SPHP’s toes were all sore from being mashed against the front of the boots for hours.\u00a0 The painful trek continued.<\/p>\n

By the time Lupe was back on the Cottonwood Trail, SPHP was beat.\u00a0 Amazingly, Lupe was\u00a0bursting with\u00a0American Dingo energy.\u00a0 The dark forest,\u00a0roaring waves crashing on the unseen shore of Kathleen Lake, and\u00a0wildly swaying treetops made Lupe wild, too.\u00a0 Something darted across the trail in the gloom ahead.\u00a0 A coyote!\u00a0 Who knew, maybe it was a wolf?\u00a0 This was the Yukon!\u00a0 Lupe seemed ready to dash off into the forest to live wild and free, too!<\/p>\n

11:07 PM.\u00a0 The\u00a0animated American Dingo\u00a0was finally\u00a0back at the G6.\u00a0 SPHP was still mostly alive.\u00a0 What a day it had been!\u00a0 Lupe had succeeded in climbing King’s Throne Peak, a feat dreamed of for a long time now.\u00a0 Despite exhaustion, SPHP was filled with joy.<\/p>\n
