Photo looks N.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Lupe and SPHP left Warren Peaks headed N on USFS Road No. 838.\u00a0 At 9:04 AM (39\u00b0F), Lupe was leaping out of the G6 again, this time\u00a0at the junction of USFS Roads No. 849 and 849.1A.\u00a0 Lupe had two peakbagging objectives nearby.\u00a0 They were two summits\u00a0called the Black Hills.\u00a0 (Not to be confused with the entire Black Hills range, which is hard not to do, since the identical names make it plenty confusing.)<\/p>\n<p>Lupe set off for the <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.peakbagger.com\/peak.aspx?pid=-54139\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Black Hills (East)<\/strong><\/a><\/span> <strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">(5,229 ft.)<\/span><\/strong>\u00a0summit first, climbing toward the S in territory W of the N ridge.\u00a0 At first,\u00a0she\u00a0encountered thickets of\u00a0brush and small trees in a forest of mixed pine and aspen.\u00a0 As Lupe gained elevation, the pines prevailed and most of the smaller stuff disappeared.\u00a0 The terrain was unusually lumpy.\u00a0 Lupe went up a series of small rises separated by little ravines or low spots.\u00a0 Deer seemed to like this area, and Lupe saw quite a few of them.<\/p>\n<p>The Black Hills (East) summit ridge runs roughly NW\/SE.\u00a0 Lupe reached a lower part of the ridgeline a\u00a0bit WNW of a protruding rock outcropping of yellowish tan limestone, or perhaps sandstone.\u00a0 This rock formation\u00a0proved to be\u00a0quite level on top, and runs the entire length of the summit ridge, which was hundreds of feet long.\u00a0 Toward the SW, the rocks form a line of small cliffs.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_6793\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-6793\" style=\"width: 660px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/IMG_3190-e1554471248367.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large ridge.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>From the NW end of the Black Hills (East) summit ridge, Lupe could see\u00a0<strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.peakbagger.com\/peak.aspx?pid=72119\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Black Hills (West)<\/span><\/a> <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">(5,323 ft.)<\/span><\/strong>.\u00a0 Black Hills\u00a0(West) is almost 100 feet higher than Black Hills (East).\u00a0 Lupe would be going over there next, but not until she finished exploring Black Hills (East).<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_6792\" SPHP traveled SE\u00a0along the\u00a0entire\u00a0length of the Black Hills (East) summit ridge, staying near the line of cliffs.\u00a0 Forest effectively\u00a0hid the views in every direction, other than SW\u00a0from the cliffs.\u00a0 Even looking SW, higher forested ridges\u00a0only a mile or two away were as far as Lupe could see.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_6795\" By Expedition No. 179, however, nearly all of the trees were bare. There were a few exceptions, however. Photo looks N.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Well, that was it.\u00a0 None of Lupe&#8217;s 3 main peakbagging objectives of the day had provided much in the way of views, and Sherrard Hill, the highest of them all, had no views at all.\u00a0 Sometimes that&#8217;s just the way it is in the mountains.<\/p>\n<p>Lupe and SPHP took a short break for\u00a0chocolate coconut granola bars and water at the SE end of the summit area.\u00a0 Then Lupe got to explore the Sherrard Hill summit looking for the highest point.\u00a0 Just like on Black Hills (East), the top of the mountain was so flat, it was hard to pin down an exact location of the true summit.\u00a0 Once again, it appeared to be in a thick grove of scrub oaks.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_6812\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-6812\" style=\"width: 660px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/IMG_3214.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-6812\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/IMG_3214-1024x768.jpg?resize=660%2C495\" alt=\"Lupe among the scrub oaks at the true summit of Sherrard Hill. This one was out in the open near Hershey Creek.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>When Lupe arrived at the G6 again (3:43 PM, 57\u00b0F), it was only a little over 2 hours until sundown.\u00a0 Time enough to do something, but not go\u00a0off climbing another mountain.\u00a0 Since Lupe had never seen Cook Lake before, why not go see the little lake?<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.recreation.gov\/camping\/cook-lake-rec-area\/r\/campgroundDetails.do?contractCode=NRSO&amp;parkId=70009\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>Cook Lake Recreation Area<\/strong><\/span><\/a> features a campground, picnic area, loop trail around the lake, and another loop trail N of the lake called the Cliff Swallow trail.\u00a0 Lupe arrived at Cook Lake (4:16 PM, 53\u00b0F)\u00a0too late to both spend time at\u00a0the lake and take the Cliff Swallow trail.\u00a0 Since the main purpose was to see Cook Lake, Lupe stuck to the lakeshore trail.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_6815\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-6815\" style=\"width: 660px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/IMG_3217.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-6815\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/IMG_3217-1024x768.jpg?resize=660%2C495\" alt=\"Lupe arrives at Cook Lake, the only lake in the Bear Lodge Mountains.
