Photo looks S using the telephoto lens.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>A visit to the Athabasca Glacier, and a trek up to Wilcox Pass were on Lupe&#8217;s agenda for the day.\u00a0 Unfortunately, both would be pointless in this weather.\u00a0 All the glorious sights would be hidden from view.<\/p>\n<p>The American Dingo had been to Wilcox Pass twice before, on both her 2013 &amp; 2014 Dingo Vacations.\u00a0 The views from the overlook toward the Athabasca Glacier and surrounding peaks\u00a0were the most spectacular Lupe had seen anywhere in the Canadian Rockies.\u00a0 Missing out on Wilcox Pass would be simply tragic!<\/p>\n<p><em>Nothing we can do, Loop,\u00a0but head N and see what conditions are like when we get there!\u00a0 Maybe these clouds will burn off or move\u00a0out by then.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Nothing had really changed, though, by the time Lupe and SPHP\u00a0drove over Sunwapta Pass into Jasper National Park.\u00a0 The sky was still completely overcast, the mountaintops hidden from view.\u00a0 Light rain fell intermittently.\u00a0 It didn&#8217;t look like Wilcox Pass was in the cards at all.<\/p>\n<p>Surprisingly,\u00a0most of the Athabasca Glacier could be seen beneath the clouds.\u00a0 Lupe could still take the little hike up toward the toe of the glacier.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_23876\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-23876\" style=\"width: 660px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-23876\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/IMG_1608-1024x768.jpg?resize=660%2C495\" alt=\"\" width=\"660\" height=\"495\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/IMG_1608.jpg?resize=1024%2C768&amp;ssl=1 1024w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/IMG_1608.jpg?resize=300%2C225&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/IMG_1608.jpg?resize=768%2C576&amp;ssl=1 768w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/IMG_1608.jpg?w=1651&amp;ssl=1 1651w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/IMG_1608.jpg?w=1320&amp;ssl=1 1320w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 660px) 100vw, 660px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-23876\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">At the start of the trail to the Athabasca Glacier. The Columbia Icefield is the largest in icefield in North America, covering about 125 square miles.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The short hike to see the Athabasca Glacier didn&#8217;t take very long, but during that time, the rain virtually stopped.\u00a0 Off to the N, SPHP noticed two tiny patches of blue sky.\u00a0 That was all it took.\u00a0 Once back at the G6, Lupe and SPHP\u00a0drove S on Icefields Parkway Hwy 93 a few miles to the Wilcox Pass trailhead.<\/p>\n<p>Only 3\u00a0vehicles were at the normally popular trailhead, an indication of how poor conditions had been to start the day.\u00a0 Disappointingly, instead of growing as hoped, the\u00a0tiny patches of blue sky had disappeared.\u00a0 It was misting again.\u00a0 The temperature was only in the 40&#8217;s (\u00b0F).<\/p>\n<p>Lupe was undeterred.\u00a0 The Carolina Dog was ready to hit the trail!\u00a0 Another vehicle pulled into the trailhead as Lupe began her ascent to Wilcox Pass (10:00 AM).<\/p>\n<p>The first part of the Wilcox Pass trail winds around\u00a0in a forest while climbing steadily.\u00a0 Shortly after crossing a wooden bridge over a steep slope, Lupe came to the first viewpoint.\u00a0 Part of the Athabasca Glacier was in view, but clouds still clung to the mountains.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_6593\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-6593\" style=\"width: 660px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/IMG_1614.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-6593\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/IMG_1614-1024x768.jpg?resize=660%2C495\" alt=\"Lupe on the Wilcox Pass trail a little beyond the first viewpoint. Staying on the main trail would have taken Lupe over the pass and down to Tangle Creek.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The commanding, panoramic view of the Athabasca Glacier and surrounding peaks Lupe was on her way to\u00a0see is perhaps 0.5 mile to\u00a01.0 mile SW of the main trail at\u00a0Wilcox Pass.\u00a0 The trail to the viewpoint climbs several small ridges, and goes through a series of lower areas, too, on the way.\u00a0 Lupe and SPHP made good progress to one of the higher ridges, where there was a large cairn.<\/p>\n<p>It was still windy, but thankfully, the rain was starting to let up.\u00a0 The clouds were lifting.\u00a0 Lupe could now see the summit of <strong><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.peakbagger.com\/peak.aspx?pid=4573\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Mount Wilcox<\/a><\/span> <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">(9,462 ft.)<\/span><\/strong>.\u00a0 Even better, off to the N was another patch of blue sky!\u00a0 It was bigger than the tiny patches of blue sky\u00a0SPHP had seen before.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_6599\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-6599\" style=\"width: 660px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/IMG_1621.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-6599\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/IMG_1621-1024x768.jpg?resize=660%2C495\" alt=\"Lupe on the ridge with the big cairn (not pictured). This ravine had a tiny stream in it. Sunwapta Pass is visible in the distance on the L. Athabasca, Mt. Andromeda, the Athabasca Glacier, Snow Dome and Mt. Kitchener\u00a0is the most scenically rewarding half day hike Lupe and SPHP have found to date.<\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>The Wilcox Pass trailhead is located\u00a0less than 0.25 mile off the N bound side\u00a0of Icefields Parkway Hwy 93 along the gravel road that leads to the Wilcox Creek campground.
