It was evening, already dark, when Lupe arrived at the cabin on Kabekona Lake in northern Minnesota.\u00a0 Surprisingly, no one seemed to be around.\u00a0 However, the door was unlocked.\u00a0 Presumably everyone would be back soon.\u00a0 Lupe and SPHP went right on in.<\/p>\n

Lupe had been here before, way back in June of 2014 – a very long time ago for the Carolina Dog.\u00a0 Did she remember the cabin?\u00a0\u00a0Lupe sniffed around curiously.\u00a0 She went up the stairs to the loft she’d loved where she and SPHP had stayed before.\u00a0 The Carolina Dog’s eyes grew wide, but she didn’t jump up on the bed.\u00a0 Did she remember the loft?\u00a0 It was hard to say.<\/p>\n

Lupe discovered there were two cats in the basement, but Laddie, the old cat that had been here in 2014, was nowhere to be seen.\u00a0 The two new cats were both curious and rather alarmed to see an American Dingo in possession of\u00a0the main floor of their cabin.\u00a0 SPHP closed the door to the basement.\u00a0 Even though Lupe likes cats, it was best to keep the cats down there for now.<\/p>\n

SPHP crashed on the couch.\u00a0 Lupe was 700 miles from home.\u00a0 It had been a long day’s drive.\u00a0 Best to get a little shuteye, before the gang returned.\u00a0 Lupe sniffed around a little more, then curled up with SPHP.<\/p>\n

Suddenly Lupe was barking furiously!\u00a0 She\u00a0had leapt up to\u00a0defend the cabin from intruders!\u00a0 Of course, the intruders happened to be John and Joyce, owners of the cabin, returning home from eating out.\u00a0 With them were Claire and Laura, who had arrived\u00a0yesterday\u00a0for the same sad reason Lupe was here.\u00a0 Lupe calmed down when she realized SPHP was glad to see these intruders.\u00a0 She most graciously permitted John and Joyce to enter their own cabin.<\/p>\n

Service at the restaurant had been\u00a0extremely slow.\u00a0 It was already after 10 PM.\u00a0 Tomorrow there would be a ceremony after church for Connie.\u00a0 The next day’s schedule was discussed.\u00a0 Then it was time to hit the hay.\u00a0 Everyone retired for the night.<\/p>\n

The next morning, Lupe, Sandy and SPHP went down to take a look at Kabekona lake.\u00a0\u00a0The lake looked wonderful!\u00a0 It\u00a0was going to be a beautiful day!\u00a0 Lupe would only have half of the afternoon and this one\u00a0evening before sunset to enjoy the lake, though.\u00a0 The rest of the\u00a0day she would be stuck in the G6.\u00a0 Tomorrow she would be headed home again.<\/p>\n

It was an amazingly warm day for northern Minnesota in early October.\u00a0 During church, Lupe was confined to the G6 with the windows rolled down as far as possible without allowing her a possible escape route.\u00a0 She had plenty of water to help her stay cool.\u00a0 She would be bored, but\u00a0fine.<\/p>\n

After church, SPHP took Lupe for a short walk to a small lake nearby.\u00a0 Lupe was soon back in the G6, though, until social hour was done.\u00a0 SPHP brought Lupe a pastry from the church meant for social time attendees.\u00a0 Lupe wanted to\u00a0go back with SPHP into the church, since SPHP had neglected to bring her any coffee, but SPHP wouldn’t hear of it.<\/p>\n

A little after noon, social hour ended.\u00a0 Now it was time to go to the cemetery for a short ceremony for Connie.\u00a0 The cemetery wasn’t far away.\u00a0 Fortunately the road went right by a field full of black cows and Canadian geese.\u00a0 Lupe had an exciting, if brief, respite from boredom barking furiously at the cows.<\/p>\n

Post\u00a0ceremony at the cemetery, a luncheon was held\u00a0back at the\u00a0church.\u00a0 Lupe was still stuck in the G6.\u00a0 However, she did receive a much appreciated ham and cheese sandwich, plus another pastry, to ease both hunger and\u00a0the monotony of confinement.<\/p>\n

It was after 2 PM by the time Lupe was back at the cabin.\u00a0 Finally, she could go exploring outside.\u00a0 Was she ever ready!\u00a0 The Carolina Dog\u00a0 charged through the N woods, nose to the ground, delighted to be free again.<\/p>\n

Lupe bounded around the cabin.\u00a0 She went with SPHP down to the dock for another quick look at\u00a0Kabekona Lake.\u00a0 She explored the driveway and woods out to County Road No. 37.<\/p>\n

After Lupe’s outdoor reconnaissance, it was time to go back to the cabin to pop the big question.\u00a0 SPHP asked John about the possibility of taking the boat out on the lake?<\/p>\n

John didn’t say no, but as SPHP expected, the events of the past summer meant John hadn’t had the boat out on the lake even once yet this year himself.\u00a0 There was a long list of tasks to accomplish to get the boat and motor ready\u00a0for launch.\u00a0 Lupe wouldn’t\u00a0get to spend much time actually on the lake.\u00a0 Nevertheless,\u00a0SPHP was prepared to spring into action, when John made another suggestion.<\/p>\n

Why not take the canoes instead of the boat?\u00a0 John had\u00a0a canoe,\u00a0and there was another one that could be borrowed at the cabin where Sandy and Lib were staying.\u00a0 That made more sense.\u00a0 It was a calm day with hardly any waves on the lake.\u00a0 The canoes would be fun, and would require almost no prep time at all!\u00a0 The plan was set.\u00a0 John went with Lupe and SPHP to launch the first canoe.<\/p>\n

Soon Lupe was in the canoe out on Kabekona Lake!\u00a0 John and SPHP paddled over to the neighbor’s dock.\u00a0 SPHP climbed up a short ladder onto the dock intending to go get the second canoe.\u00a0 SPHP had barely reached the top of the ladder, when suddenly Lupe decided she wasn’t getting left behind.\u00a0 She launched herself out of the canoe!<\/p>\n

Of course, Lupe didn’t realize the canoe would tip as she made her leap for the dock.\u00a0 Consequently, she didn’t jump quite high enough.\u00a0 For a fraction of a second, she\u00a0clung to\u00a0the edge of the dock trying to dig her claws in\u00a0and scramble up, but she couldn’t.\u00a0 Lupe plunged back into Kabekona Lake sinking beneath the surface!<\/p>\n

Now Carolina Dogs, at least this<\/em> Carolina Dog, are not water dogs.\u00a0 Although Lupe likes wading in puddles and streams, and even laying down in them, SPHP has almost never seen Lupe swim.\u00a0 Maybe it was because of her first swimming experience.<\/p>\n

When Lupe was 3 months old, on her first trip to the park, Lupe had hurled herself for no apparent\u00a0reason into Rapid Creek.\u00a0 Of course,\u00a0the tiny puppy\u00a0sank far below the surface.\u00a0 SPHP\u00a0was\u00a0on the verge of wading\u00a0in\u00a0to save her.\u00a0 However, Lupe popped back up to the surface and swam against the current for shore, managing to extricate herself all on her own.<\/p>\n

That first\u00a0experience must have been quite a shock, though.\u00a0 Puppy Lupe had had no idea she would sink and start to drown.\u00a0 It was March.\u00a0 There was 6″ of snow on the ground.\u00a0 The water\u00a0in the creek\u00a0couldn’t have been much above freezing.\u00a0 Ever since then, Lupe has carefully avoided water that’s over her head.<\/p>\n

Did Lupe even remember how to swim?\u00a0 SPHP peered anxiously into Kabekona Lake.\u00a0 Lupe\u00a0did swim\u00a0back up to the surface!\u00a0 She was doing the Dingo paddle for all she was worth, but she was confused.\u00a0 She swam around to the wrong side of the canoe\u00a0where she couldn’t see the near shore.<\/p>\n

SPHP called to Lupe and encouraged her to come.\u00a0 She swam back around the canoe again, and headed\u00a0for shore.\u00a0 When she reached it, she\u00a0released a great spray of water as she shook herself off.\u00a0 Despite her unexpected baptism in Kabekona Lake, Lupe was fine.\u00a0 She went with SPHP to launch the second canoe.<\/p>\n

Before long, Laura and Sandy joined Lupe’s canoe fleet crew\u00a0as paddlers.\u00a0 Laura went with John, and Sandy with Lupe and SPHP.\u00a0 It was sunny and warm.\u00a0 Lupe dried off quickly.\u00a0 She\u00a0was quite content to stay in<\/em> the canoe.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, back at Canoe No. 2, Sandy was having fun, too. Lupe was still getting used to life as a sea dog. She was careful not to leap out of the canoe a second time.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

There was no particular goal other than to paddle around lazily enjoying the day.\u00a0 Preacher’s Point along the SE\u00a0shore of Kabekona Lake became the canoe trip’s destination by default.<\/p>\n

After going a bit beyond Preacher’s Point, Lupe’s canoe fleet turned around and headed back for John’s cabin.\u00a0 There was no rush,\u00a0just a leisurely paddle.\u00a0 Over two hours had gone by on the lake by the time the tiny fleet arrived back at the dock.\u00a0 John, Laura and Sandy were done for the day.<\/p>\n

However, Lib hadn’t gotten a chance to be out on the lake yet.\u00a0 She joined Lupe and SPHP for\u00a0a one canoe\u00a0sunset cruise back to Preacher’s Point.\u00a0 The water was glassy smooth.<\/p>\n

On\u00a0her second return trip\u00a0from Preacher Point, Lupe was sailing toward the now setting sun.\u00a0 Her afternoon and evening on Kabekona Lake was almost over.\u00a0 The canoes had been a great idea.\u00a0 Even so, the\u00a0hours had flown by fast.<\/p>\n

By the time it was all over and the canoes were put away, there wasn’t much light left at all.\u00a0 Lupe and SPHP took one last look at Kabekona Lake from the dock before heading to the cabin for supper.<\/p>\n

Supper was well underway in the cabin\u00a0by the time Lupe and SPHP appeared.\u00a0 The evening was spent in pleasant conversation, except for a brief altercation between Blackie, the jet black cat, and Lupe.<\/p>\n

Apparently Blackie resented Lupe getting too close to his dinner bowl.\u00a0 Blackie\u00a0let her know it in no uncertain terms.\u00a0 In return, Lupe made it clear that American Dingoes have no intention of being bossed around by mere cats.\u00a0 Fortunately, a truce based on mutual understanding was reached in two seconds.<\/p>\n

The next morning, it was already time to say good-bye.\u00a0 Laura had left well before dawn to catch a plane.\u00a0 Sandy and Lib departed right after breakfast.\u00a0\u00a0A little while later,\u00a0it was Lupe and SPHP’s turn to hit the long road home.<\/p>\n
