{"id":6414,"date":"2016-10-05T08:10:28","date_gmt":"2016-10-05T14:10:28","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/adventuresoflupe.com\/?p=6414"},"modified":"2019-04-15T22:04:38","modified_gmt":"2019-04-16T04:04:38","slug":"mount-bourgeau-banff-national-park-canada-8-1-16","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/adventuresoflupe.com\/?p=6414","title":{"rendered":"Mount Bourgeau, Banff National Park, Canada (8-1-16)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>Day 3 of Lupe&#8217;s Summer of 2016 Dingo Vacation.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The trailhead for <strong><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.peakbagger.com\/peak.aspx?pid=4661\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Mount Bourgeau<\/a><\/span> <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">(9,616 ft.)<\/span><\/strong>\u00a0was empty when Lupe arrived (7:09 AM, 41\u00b0F).\u00a0 That didn&#8217;t last long.\u00a0 Another vehicle pulled in within 2 minutes, and 5 or 6\u00a0more pulled in within 10 minutes.\u00a0 Lupe was anxious to get started.\u00a0 SPHP agreed.\u00a0 SPHP helped Lupe up the metal grate stairway, opened the gate, and let Lupe down in the forest on the other side.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_6359\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-6359\" style=\"width: 660px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/IMG_1480.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-6359\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/IMG_1480-1024x768.jpg?resize=660%2C495\" alt=\"Mount Bourgeau as seen from Trans-Canada Hwy No. 1 a few miles W of Banff. Bourgeau.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Lupe and SPHP hurried along the trail to stay ahead of the crowd that would soon be coming.\u00a0\u00a0The trail\u00a0gained elevation at a relentless, but moderate pace.\u00a0 SPHP\u00a0grew concerned about the weather.\u00a0 The sky was clouding up.\u00a0 Fortunately, after a while it\u00a0gradually cleared again enough to alleviate any real worries.<\/p>\n<p>If successful, this would be Lupe&#8217;s 2nd trip up Mount Bourgeau.\u00a0 She had climbed it more than two years ago on 7-22-14\u00a0during her 2014 Dingo Vacation.\u00a0 That time SPHP had forgotten the camera, a mistake not realized until Lupe was already far from the G6, too far to go back for it.<\/p>\n<p>If that hadn&#8217;t happened, Lupe would probably have been\u00a0exploring a new\u00a0trail\u00a0to a different mountain today.\u00a0 However, the views from Mount Bourgeau\u00a0had been\u00a0too grand not to have some photos of Lupe up there.\u00a0 So now, 2 years later,\u00a0Lupe was back!\u00a0 And this time, SPHP made 100% certain to bring the camera.<\/p>\n<p>Lupe pressed on.\u00a0 Despite the unchanging appearance of the forest, she was making progress.\u00a0 First, traffic noise from Trans-Canada Hwy No. 1 faded away.\u00a0 Then she could hear\u00a0a rushing\u00a0creek far below to the N.\u00a0 She eventually crossed a nice wooden bridge\u00a0over\u00a0another creek.<\/p>\n<p>When\u00a0Lupe reached the big waterfall cascading down a headwall, SPHP knew the trail was about to get steeper.\u00a0 The good news was that Lupe didn&#8217;t have much farther to go to reach Bourgeau Lake.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_6361\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-6361\" style=\"width: 660px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/IMG_1483-e1555385467336.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-6361\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/IMG_1483-e1555385467336-768x1024.jpg?resize=660%2C880\" alt=\"\" width=\"660\" height=\"880\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/IMG_1483-e1555385467336.jpg?resize=768%2C1024&amp;ssl=1 768w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/IMG_1483-e1555385467336.jpg?resize=225%2C300&amp;ssl=1 225w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/IMG_1483-e1555385467336.jpg?w=1650&amp;ssl=1 1650w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/IMG_1483-e1555385467336.jpg?w=1320&amp;ssl=1 1320w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 660px) 100vw, 660px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-6361\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Lupe approaches the waterfall cascading down the headwall. Photo looks SW.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Lupe and SPHP reached the level trail above the headwall.\u00a0 The forest gave way to more open territory where the\u00a0views were every bit as wonderful as SPHP remembered.\u00a0 From now on, Lupe would see increasingly spectacular country all the rest of the\u00a0way up to the summit of Mount Bourgeau.<\/p>\n<p>It wasn&#8217;t much farther to Bourgeau Lake, tucked away in a corner at the base of towering cliffs to the S and W.\u00a0 A small forested area kept the lake\u00a0hidden from view until\u00a0Lupe was almost upon it.\u00a0 The main trail doesn&#8217;t go quite all the way to the lake.\u00a0 Upon\u00a0re-entering the forest, Lupe and SPHP\u00a0took a minor side trail leading to the NE shore of Bourgeau Lake.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_6366\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-6366\" style=\"width: 660px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/IMG_1488.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-6366\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/IMG_1488-1024x768.jpg?resize=660%2C495\" alt=\"Lupe reaches Bourgeau Lake, her first major objective. Photo looks NE.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>At Bourgeau Lake, Lupe had already gone well over half the distance along the trail to\u00a0the top of Mount Bourgeau, but more than half\u00a0of the elevation gain required was still ahead.\u00a0 Lupe\u00a0stayed at Bourgeau Lake only a\u00a0short while.\u00a0\u00a0Lupe and SPHP returned to the main trail to continue\u00a0the trek.<\/p>\n<p>The trail\u00a0wound SW\u00a0through the forest a little to the NW of Bourgeau Lake, which was no longer in view.\u00a0\u00a0Before long,\u00a0the trail\u00a0turned NW and started climbing again.\u00a0 Lupe left the forest behind as she gained elevation.\u00a0\u00a0The trail now climbed steeply\u00a0traversing a\u00a0long slope of loose rock toward the top of a 2nd headwall.\u00a0 Well to the left of the trail, a creek tumbled\u00a0noisily down a series of small waterfalls.<\/p>\n<p>By the time\u00a0Lupe reached the top of the 2nd headwall, the trail had turned W.\u00a0 A small lake could be seen ahead.\u00a0 Beyond the lake, the trail\u00a0continued up yet another smaller rise.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_6369\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-6369\" style=\"width: 660px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/IMG_1494.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-6369\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/IMG_1494-1024x768.jpg?resize=660%2C495\" alt=\"Lupe reaches the top of the 2nd headwall.
