Squirrel Mountain, I hope!<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>At 10:06 AM, SPHP backed the G6 out of the driveway.\u00a0 Lupe was on her way!<\/p>\n<p>It was a very long way to where Lupe was going.\u00a0 Most of today and tomorrow would be spent traveling.\u00a0 Lupe didn&#8217;t mind.\u00a0 She loves riding, looking out the window, and sniffing the air.\u00a0 Mostly she\u00a0watches for animals to bark at.\u00a0 She was going to see plenty of them in the next two days.\u00a0 Cows, horses, and occasionally sheep, deer or pronghorn antelope.<\/p>\n<p>Lupe&#8217;s very satisfying barking frenzy began long before\u00a0her Black Hills of South Dakota disappeared in the rear view mirror.\u00a0 It continued for hours across the high rolling plains and pine-covered ridges of\u00a0SE Montana.\u00a0 W of Lame Deer, Montana\u00a0the temperature hit 100\u00b0F.\u00a0 By then, Lupe was barking in air-conditioned comfort.<\/p>\n<p>The miles rolled by.\u00a0 It was an easy, relaxing drive on lightly traveled highways.\u00a0 SPHP grinned at Lupe.\u00a0 <em>You know, Loop, things might never get any better than they are right now.\u00a0 We are free as birds, and have your whole Dingo Vacation ahead of us!<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Well, actually they could be a little better, SPHP!<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>What do you mean?<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Did you bring any\u00a0water?\u00a0 My barker is dry!<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Oh, sorry!\u00a0 So, you&#8217;re one parched puppy, aye?\u00a0 Small wonder.\u00a0 Hang on a sec.\u00a0 Here you go.\u00a0 <\/em>Lupe slurped up an entire bowl of water and requested a refill, which she\u00a0also drained in short order.\u00a0 <em>Better?<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Much!\u00a0 Thank you!\u00a0 <\/em>Lupe returned to vigilance.\u00a0 More cows could appear at any moment.\u00a0 If not, haystacks, barns\u00a0or suspicious-looking outbuildings would do, too.\u00a0 The G6 was a noisy place.<\/p>\n<p>At 6:30 PM, SPHP parked the G6 at King&#8217;s Hill Pass on Hwy 89 in the Little Belt Mountains of central Montana.\u00a0 <em>That&#8217;s enough driving for today, Loop.\u00a0 We&#8217;ll stay here tonight.\u00a0 Remember this place?\u00a0 You were here a couple of years ago.\u00a0 How about climbing <strong><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.peakbagger.com\/peak.aspx?pid=53651\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Porphyry Peak<\/a><\/span> <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">(8,192 ft.)<\/span><\/strong> again to stretch our legs?<\/em><\/p>\n<p>By now, Lupe was very ready to get out of the G6, eager to go exploring\u00a0for a while.\u00a0 A dirt road left King&#8217;s Hill Pass heading W for Porphyry Peak.\u00a0 It wound around a bit, but went all the way to the summit.\u00a0 By the time Lupe reached the ranger tower on top of the mountain, she had gone at least 1.5 miles along the road, and gained nearly 800 feet of elevation.<\/p>\n<p>No one else seemed to be around.<\/p>\n<figure been\u00a0off exploring the American West on his own.\u00a0 He had a beautiful camera and hopes\u00a0of becoming a &#8220;digital nomad&#8221;, turning photography into a profession.<\/p>\n<p>Cooper had another month of exploring ahead of him before flying to Hawaii to work on a farm for room and board for 3 months.\u00a0 After that, he intended to find work on a ship.\u00a0 Basically, he was taking a year off for various adventures before starting college.\u00a0 Lupe and SPHP were both impressed.<\/p>\n<p>By the time Lupe and SPHP had heard Cooper&#8217;s story, the sun was getting near the horizon.\u00a0 Cooper also wanted to get some photos from the ranger tower.\u00a0 Lupe, Cooper and SPHP all went over to the ranger tower together.\u00a0 This time, Lupe felt braver.\u00a0 She good-bye and good luck.\u00a0 Lupe took a shortcut down one of the ski runs to get to the road back to King&#8217;s Hill Pass.\u00a0 By the time she\u00a0reached the G6, the light was fading.\u00a0 Day 1 of her 2016 Dingo Vacation was over.\u00a0 It had been a good, promising start.\u00a0 Lupe had Alpo for dinner, then settled down on her soft perch for the night.<\/p>\n<p>Early the next morning, Lupe was totally energized and ready for many more long hours of enthusiastic barking.\u00a0 The sun wasn&#8217;t even up yet (5:33 AM).\u00a0\u00a0<em>Let&#8217;s climb King&#8217;s Hill before we leave, Loop.\u00a0 You look ready for a romp!\u00a0 Burning off a little of that American Dingo energy now\u00a0wouldn&#8217;t hurt a thing.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>No argument there!\u00a0 A trek up <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/peakbagger.com\/peak.aspx?pid=87626\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">King&#8217;s Hill<\/span><\/a> <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">(8,008 ft.)<\/span><\/strong>\u00a0sounded like an even better way to start the day to Lupe than barking at cows.\u00a0 She burst out of the G6 as soon as the door was open, and dashed into the woods.\u00a0 On the prowl and sniffing excitedly, she\u00a0wound around racing\u00a0between the trees.<\/p>\n<p>SPHP followed Lupe into the forest, and\u00a0quickly\u00a0came upon\u00a0USFS Road No. 487, which headed S\u00a0angling up\u00a0the W slope of King&#8217;s Hill.\u00a0 The road curved around to the E as it reached the open ground near the top of the hill.\u00a0 At a 3-way intersection, Lupe and SPHP turned N on USFS Road No. 251 (Dry Wolf Road).<\/p>\n<p>SPHP didn&#8217;t stay on the road much farther.\u00a0\u00a0Lupe was running around up on the\u00a0open ground leading to the summit.\u00a0 A cool W wind was making things a bit chilly up here, but the sun would be up in minutes.\u00a0 Lupe reached the summit of King&#8217;s Hill, marked by a survey benchmark Photo looks SSW.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Lupe enjoyed\u00a0a few more short breaks out of the G6 during the day, but once out of the mountains, Day 2 was mostly another Carolina Dog barkfest.\u00a0 Shortly before noon, Lupe crossed the border into Canada.\u00a0\u00a0Yesterday&#8217;s 100\u00b0F heat in Montana was long gone.\u00a0 The high in Canada was only in the low 60&#8217;s \u00b0F.\u00a0 The rest of Lupe&#8217;s summer was going to be cool and comfortable!<\/p>\n<p>NW of Lethbridge, there were big clouds and scattered rainstorms, even a short stretch of small hail.\u00a0 It had been nearly 2 years since Lupe was last in Canada, and it was good to be back.\u00a0 Off to the W, the Canadian Rockies were beckoning Lupe to come and play!<\/p>\n<p>By early evening, Lupe was entering the gorgeous Canadian Rockies.\u00a0 She got to stop and take the Many Springs Trail in <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.albertaparks.ca\/bow-valley-pp.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Bow Valley Provincial Park<\/strong><\/a><\/span>.\u00a0 The Many Springs Trail\u00a0was super\u00a0easy, with\u00a0little elevation change as it went around a big pond in a wetlands area that looked like prime wildlife habitat.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_6352\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-6352\" style=\"width: 660px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/IMG_1478.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-6352\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/IMG_1478-1024x768.jpg?resize=660%2C495\" alt=\"Lupe on a footbridge along the Many Springs Trail in Bow Valley Provincial Park, Alberta.
