final romp in her favorite woods.\u00a0 The Carolina Dog felt so wonderful that on the way back to the RAV4, the dastardly were-puppy attacked SPHP.<\/p>\n<p><em>9-6-23, 2:38 PM, 64\u00baF<\/em> &#8211; Having spent most of the morning fueling up and resupplying in Whitehorse, the &#8220;Welcome to Carmacks&#8221; sign along North Klondike Hwy No. 2 was the next stop.<\/p>\n<figure #0000ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bellsalaska.com\/highway\/robert-campbell-highway-yukon\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Robert Campbell Hwy No. 4<\/strong><\/a><\/span>.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Robert Campbell Hwy No. 4, SPHP?\u00a0 Funny, but I can&#8217;t seem to remember a thing about it!<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>That&#8217;s because we&#8217;ve never been on it before, Loopster.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Oh, awesome, SPHP!\u00a0 All new adventures in all new territory coming up?<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Precisely, Sweet Puppy.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The turn onto Hwy No. 4 came a mile after crossing the Yukon River.\u00a0 Lupe was soon enjoying a terrific view of the fabled river from a high bluff overlooking it.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_62614\" before eventually angling NE up the Little Salmon River valley.\u00a0 The Little Salmon River was seldom, if ever, in view.\u00a0 No big deal, but SPHP was disappointed when Robert Campbell Hwy No. 4 reached Little Salmon Lake, and there were no pullouts with views.\u00a0 Trees lining the highway permitted only occasional glimpses of the huge lake.<\/p>\n<p>Taking a chance on a side road named Snowcap View Road, it went by several private cabins before getting Lupe down to Little Salmon Lake.\u00a0 Better yet, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/peakbagger.com\/peak.aspx?pid=640\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Snowcap Mountain<\/span><\/a> <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">(5,800 ft.)<\/span><\/strong> was actually in sight directly across the impressive Interpretive Centre &#8211;<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Sure took your sweet time about it, SPHP.\u00a0 Learn anything?<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Yeah.\u00a0 Glad we stopped in, Looper.\u00a0 Talked to a lady named Sabine.\u00a0 First thing she told me was that due to a bridge that washed out, it&#8217;s no longer possible to drive to the Mount Mye trailhead near Vangorda Creek.\u00a0 She had no idea how far it was to the trailhead from the bridge.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Oh, that&#8217;s bad, SPHP!<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Yup, a real downer, Loop.\u00a0 However, Sabine also said that it&#8217;s possible to get to Mount Mye from the Moose Trail, which starts 16 km up the Faro Mine Access Road.\u00a0 Instead of turning R at the fork, we go L, looking for a moose sign.\u00a0 Sabine provided me with a set of written instructions on how to find the trail, and navigate the first part of it, which is evidently a bit confusing.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Oh, that&#8217;s good, SPHP!<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Yes, except that the instructions seem mighty vague, too, Looper.\u00a0 When I asked questions, Sabine couldn&#8217;t clarify anything.\u00a0 She&#8217;s never been on the Moose Trail herself.\u00a0 All she could really tell me was to look for a moose sign along the R side of the road.\u00a0 The directions, which I find confusing enough, have a cryptic message scribbled on them saying &#8220;Moose sign 50 m back.&#8221;\u00a0 50 meters back from where?\u00a0 Sabine had no more clue than I did.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Not so hot, SPHP, but how hard can it be to spot a moose sign?<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Who knows, Loopster?\u00a0 In any case, Sabine also gave me vague directions on how to find the trailhead for both <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/peakbagger.com\/peak.aspx?pid=135511\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Rose Mountain<\/span><\/a> <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">(6,513 ft.)<\/span><\/strong> and <strong>Faro Mountain <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">(5,467 ft.)<\/span><\/strong>, too.\u00a0 They are out W past the Faro Mine.\u00a0 Supposed to rain this afternoon, so maybe we can at least find the trailheads today?<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Rain wouldn&#8217;t be surprising, SPHP.\u00a0 It&#8217;s awfully cloudy.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Oh, and by the way, Sabine gave me 2 little Milk-Bones for you.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Now you&#8217;re talking, SPHP!\u00a0 That was nice of her.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Intent upon finding the Moose Trail, SPHP drove back up the Faro Mine Access Road while Lupe munched on the Milk-Bones.\u00a0 This time, SPHP took the L branch of the road when it forked, then began slowing down after a couple more km, the better to watch for a moose sign on the R.<\/p>\n<p>Nothing!\u00a0 SPHP drove all the way to the Faro Mine main gate without seeing a moose sign.<\/p>\n<p><em>Now what, SPHP?<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Seems strange that we didn&#8217;t see the Moose Trail, Looper.\u00a0 I was driving super slow.\u00a0 The Rose and Faro Mountain trailhead is supposed to be at the end of a side road 3 miles W of here.\u00a0 Let&#8217;s see if we can find that before making another Moose Trail pass.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>A side road did leave the Faro Mine Access Road heading W, just before reaching the Faro Mine main gate.\u00a0 Taking it, 2 live moose, a mama and calf, soon crossed right in front of the RAV4.<\/p>\n<p><em>What luck!\u00a0 No doubt they&#8217;re on the Moose Trail, SPHP!<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Yes, but not the Moose Trail we&#8217;re looking for, Loopster.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The side road ended after 2+ miles.\u00a0 A deserted gravel yard was on the R, and another road headed into the trees on the L.\u00a0 It was blocked by a red and black trailer.\u00a0 An ATV, a bigger white trailer, and a small table with camp chairs were all nearby.\u00a0 No signs about any trails were evident, but <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/peakbagger.com\/peak.aspx?pid=135511\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Rose Mountain<\/span><\/a> <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">(6,513 Photo looks NNE.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Passing one ghastly spot after another, SPHP kept trying to return to the Moose Trail, but it was no use.\u00a0 Virtually the entire trail was nothing but muck and water.\u00a0 Rare semi-dry spots ended almost instantly, another long stretch of misery ahead.<\/p>\n<p><em>Criminitly, Loopster!\u00a0 I see now why they call it the Moose Trail.\u00a0 Only a genuine moose would enjoy a slog through a swamp like this!<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Maybe you should have asked Sabine for directions to the Human Trail to Mount Mye, SPHP?<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Ahh, yes!\u00a0 The Human Trail to Mount Mye!\u00a0 Wish I&#8217;d had the presence of mind to ask for that instead, Loop, although one would think that Sabine would notice that I don&#8217;t really much resemble a moose, do I?<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Well, now that you happen to mention it, SPHP, from the right angle, and in the right light, you &#8230;<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Oh, no you don&#8217;t, Looper!\u00a0 Don&#8217;t even go there!<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The horrid, no good, excruciatingly slow bushwhack went on and on.\u00a0 Perseverance would eventually pay off, though.\u00a0 The Moose Trail was clearly heading for the lower W slopes of <strong>Peak <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">6400<\/span><\/strong>, where steeper ground would almost certainly put an end to the bog slog.<\/p>\n<p><em>9-8-23, 1:01 PM, Moose Trail &#8211; <\/em>Over an hour had gone by during SPHP&#8217;s soggy, 0.33 mile bushwhack, but Lupe was finally back on firm ground.\u00a0 Ahead, the Moose Trail was in vastly improved shape again as it wound up onto <strong>Peak <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">6400&#8217;s<\/span><\/strong> lower W slopes.\u00a0 SPHP&#8217;s boots squeaked as water squished out with every step during a steep trudge higher.<\/p>\n<p>At the Moose Trail&#8217;s initial high point on the slope, SPHP paused for a breather.\u00a0 A steep, 25 foot deep dip was ahead, beyond which the trail vanished into another forest.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_62644\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-62644\" style=\"width: 1651px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/IMG_2865-scaled.jpg?ssl=1\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-62644\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/IMG_2865-scaled.jpg?resize=660%2C495&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"660\" height=\"495\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/IMG_2865-scaled.jpg?w=1651&amp;ssl=1 1651w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/IMG_2865-scaled.jpg?resize=300%2C225&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/IMG_2865-scaled.jpg?w=1320&amp;ssl=1 1320w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 660px) 100vw, 660px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-62644\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Thankfully, back on <strong>terra firma<\/strong>.
