{"id":57858,"date":"2025-01-04T08:10:26","date_gmt":"2025-01-04T15:10:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/adventuresoflupe.com\/?p=57858"},"modified":"2025-01-23T15:57:36","modified_gmt":"2025-01-23T22:57:36","slug":"mount-sittichinli-richardson-mountains-yukon-territory-canada-part-3-base-camp-to-the-summit-8-10-23","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/adventuresoflupe.com\/?p=57858","title":{"rendered":"Mount Sittichinli, Richardson Mountains, Yukon Territory, Canada &#8211; Part 3: Base Camp to the Summit (8-10-23)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>The wee hours, Yukon Territory\/Northwest Territories border<\/em>\u00a0&#8211; The wind blew most of the night.\u00a0 In Lupe&#8217;s tiny house, SPHP shivered despite the mild temperatures of the ongoing Arctic apocalypse.<\/p>\n<p>The Carolina Dog was unfazed.\u00a0 A couple of times she wanted out into the wind on a night that never got completely dark.\u00a0 SPHP watched her dim form sniffing and wandering nearby.\u00a0 Each time Lupe returned, SPHP wrapped her red sleeping bag over her, then tried to sleep.<\/p>\n<p><em>5:13 AM &#8211;<\/em> The wind had abated somewhat, blowing with less vigor now from out of the E.\u00a0 Even though the sun was nowhere to be seen, it was already quite light out.<\/p>\n<p><em>Rise and shine, Looper!\u00a0 Summit day is here!<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Bleary-eyed after her dead-of-night adventures, the American Dingo was now reluctant to leave the comfort of her red sleeping bag.<\/p>\n<p><em>The smoke is even worse than it was yesterday, SPHP.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>I know.\u00a0 It&#8217;s a shame.\u00a0 We aren&#8217;t going to get to see much at all.\u00a0 However, if it weren&#8217;t for the Arctic apocalypse, we probably wouldn&#8217;t even be here.\u00a0 Just think, with any of your usual Dingo good luck, Loopster, we&#8217;ll stand atop <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/peakbagger.com\/peak.aspx?pid=134277\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Mount Sittichinli<\/span><\/a> <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">(5,165 ft.)<\/span><\/strong> this very morning!<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>We&#8217;re that close, SPHP?<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Oh, yeah!\u00a0 We&#8217;re only 1 km SE of the summit, Loop, although our route to it will inevitably be somewhat longer.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>SPHP regretted drinking both strawberry Equates yesterday.\u00a0 Breakfast was quick and skimpy &#8211; water, trail mix, and a bit of beef jerky shared with Lupe, who also had Taste of the Wild.<\/p>\n<p>In the cool morning breeze, Lupe watched as SPHP packed everything up, then stashed the tiny house and both sleeping bags beneath a nearby overhanging rock.<\/p>\n<p><em>Alrighty, let&#8217;s see if we can actually manage to do this, Loopster.\u00a0 Onward!\u00a0 Puppy, ho!<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Leaving the spot where her tiny house had stood only moments ago, Lupe began climbing NE along a broad ramp of tundra below the nearby talus ridge.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_57549\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-57549\" style=\"width: 1651px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/IMG_7200-scaled.jpg?ssl=1\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-57549\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/IMG_7200-scaled.jpg?resize=660%2C495&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"660\" height=\"495\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/IMG_7200-scaled.jpg?w=1651&amp;ssl=1 1651w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/IMG_7200-scaled.jpg?resize=300%2C225&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/IMG_7200-scaled.jpg?w=1320&amp;ssl=1 1320w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 660px) 100vw, 660px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-57549\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Lupe left base camp traveling along the <strong>wide tundra ramp<\/strong> at R. Photo looks E.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><em>8:10 AM, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/peakbagger.com\/peak.aspx?pid=134277\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Mount Sittichinli<\/span><\/a> <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">(5,165 ft.)<\/span><\/strong><\/em> &#8211; Amid the Arctic apocalypse, smoke streaming by her on a 15-20 mph NE wind, Lupe stood next to the summit cairn, the sun a mere bright spot in the gray sky.\u00a0 With visibility at only 100-150 feet, there were no views at all beyond the immediate summit region.\u00a0 Even so, SPHP was ecstatic.<\/p>\n<p><em>Loopster!\u00a0 We&#8217;re here.\u00a0 I can&#8217;t believe it!\u00a0 Congratulations, Sweet Puppy!\u00a0 Mount Sittichinli!<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Despite the smoke, it seemed the most wonderful thing ever.\u00a0 SPHP heaped praise on the American Dingo.<\/p>\n<p>Mount Sittichinli&#8217;s summit region consisted almost entirely of a jumble of talus.\u00a0 After a congratulatory pawshake, a retreat was made to the only refuge in sight.\u00a0 20 feet S of the summit cairn and 15 feet below it, a lone level spot covered with tiny rocks was at the bottom of a depression surrounded by talus.\u00a0 This spot was just big enough for the Carolina Dog to curl up on in relative comfort.<\/p>\n<p>During a long rest break, the air was filled with the strong acrid scent of the wildfire smoke constantly sweeping by.\u00a0 It was impossible to tell if there were any clouds in the sky.\u00a0 Even the sun had vanished completely, reappearing only briefly now and then as a powerless, pale white ghost.<\/p>\n<p><em>If Mount Sittichinli is such a fabulous achievement, it must be chocolate coconut bar time, SPHP!<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>No doubt about it, Loopster.\u00a0 Hang on just a moment.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Lupe watched in disbelief as SPHP emptied the entire pack.\u00a0 Nothing.<\/p>\n<p><em>You didn&#8217;t bring one, did you, SPHP?\u00a0 Our most daring and ambitious Arctic adventure ever, and you didn&#8217;t bring a single chocolate coconut bar.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Loopster, I swear!\u00a0 I was sure I brought one.\u00a0 We didn&#8217;t eat it already somewhere along the way, did we?<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Nice try, SPHP.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Whatever the truth of the matter, SPHP was no magician.\u00a0 Lupe had to settle for beef jerky, an eagerly accepted Dingo-approved substitute.\u00a0 Other than that, it was Taste of the Wild and water for her, water and more boring trail mix for SPHP.<\/p>\n<p>The unexpected trail up the steep NE face of the mountain was not the only sign of human activity.\u00a0 Human junk littered the talus around the depression &#8211; miscellaneous pieces of metal, plus an assortment of cables, wires, bolts, screws, and nuts.\u00a0 SPHP loaded a fraction of this debris into the pack for disposal later, latching onto a 1.25&#8243; long bolt with attached rusty nut for a different purpose.<\/p>\n<p><em>How about we keep this bolt as a Mount Sittichinli souvenir, Looper?<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Good idea, SPHP!\u00a0 You can add it to my collection of rocks, and odds and ends from special places.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Guess I should have realized that people had been up here before, Loop.\u00a0 Some of the topo maps show a survey benchmark.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>We should try to find it, SPHP!\u00a0 A photo of the marker with a &#8220;Sittichinli&#8221; stamp would be an awesome souvenir, too.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Returning to the summit cairn, no survey benchmark was evident on any of the nearby rocks.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_57535\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-57535\" style=\"width: 1651px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/IMG_2074-scaled.jpg?ssl=1\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-57535\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/IMG_2074-scaled.jpg?resize=660%2C495&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"660\" height=\"495\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/IMG_2074-scaled.jpg?w=1651&amp;ssl=1 1651w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/IMG_2074-scaled.jpg?resize=300%2C225&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/IMG_2074-scaled.jpg?w=1320&amp;ssl=1 1320w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 660px) 100vw, 660px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-57535\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Back at the <strong>summit cairn<\/strong>. Photo looks N.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><em>Dang.\u00a0 Figures.\u00a0 Guess we should have made an attempt of <strong>Peak <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">1520M<\/span><\/strong>, after all, Loop.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Who knew?\u00a0 The world can be a fickle, persnickety place, SPHP.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>When Lupe reached <strong>Pass <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">1350M<\/span><\/strong> W of <strong><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Peak <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/peakbagger.com\/peak.aspx?pid=135578\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">1402M<\/span><\/a><\/strong>, SPHP paused.<\/p>\n<p><em>Last chance for a look at Mount Sittichinli, Loopster.\u00a0 Don&#8217;t suppose we will ever see it again.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>A sad thought, SPHP.\u00a0 Mount Sittichinli was an incredible adventure!<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Lupe had a grand time during the return.\u00a0 Leading the way and never tiring, she didn&#8217;t climb Peak 1402M again, but did explore the tan gash from <strong>Pass <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">1350M<\/span><\/strong> down into the huge valley to the SW, drinking freely from the stream that created the gash.\u00a0 Approaching <strong>Pass <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">1125M<\/span><\/strong>, she went right by the tall white stone, which actually was a pretty decent landmark.<\/p>\n<p>The Carolina Dog crossed <strong>Pass <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">990M<\/span><\/strong> again, but avoided the unnecessary talus climb to <strong>Pass <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">1110M<\/span><\/strong>, staying lower and farther E.\u00a0 This was a much better route than the talus, yet still somewhat rougher terrain than SPHP expected, full of hills and ravines of various sizes that had to be crossed.<\/p>\n<p><em>10:40 PM, 52\u00baF, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dempsterhighway.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>Dempster Highway<\/strong><\/span><\/a><\/em> &#8211;
