{"id":5500,"date":"2016-05-02T08:10:18","date_gmt":"2016-05-02T14:10:18","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/adventuresoflupe.com\/?p=5500"},"modified":"2020-09-23T07:00:58","modified_gmt":"2020-09-23T13:00:58","slug":"black-hills-sd-expedition-no-167-surveyors-hill-red-butte-yellow-butte-the-elk-mountain-benchmark-4-20-16","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/adventuresoflupe.com\/?p=5500","title":{"rendered":"Black Hills, SD Expedition No. 167 &#8211; Surveyor&#8217;s Hill, Red Butte, Yellow Butte &#038; the Elk Mountain Benchmark (4-20-16)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>SPHP wasn&#8217;t very well organized.\u00a0 It took longer than it should have to get going.\u00a0 Finally,\u00a0at noon, Lupe and SPHP\u00a0were on their way\u00a0in the G6.<\/p>\n<p>Lupe was already expecting great things!\u00a0 She was riding up high on a small mountain of\u00a0gear, blankets and pillows, as if she was starting off on one of her Dingo Vacations.\u00a0 That wasn&#8217;t what was happening, but this <strong><em>was<\/em><\/strong> going to be a special overnight outing.\u00a0 Lupe was going to get to do two Black Hills, SD Expeditions in a row!<\/p>\n<p>Lupe&#8217;s peakbagging goals were all clustered in the SW Black Hills, not too far from the Wyoming border.\u00a0 First up was an easy one, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.peakbagger.com\/peak.aspx?pid=70652\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><b>Surveyor&#8217;s Hill<\/b><\/span><\/a><b> <\/b><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><b>(5,640 ft.)<\/b><span style=\"color: #333333;\">.\u00a0 SPHP parked the G6 at a curve in USFS Road No. 668 down in Hay Draw (1:48 PM, 58\u00b0F).\u00a0 All Lupe had to do to get up to Surveyor&#8217;s Hill was follow a side valley NW for 0.375 mile.\u00a0 Surveyor&#8217;s Hill was a minor hill sitting up on a larger ridge that lost elevation as it\u00a0went SW.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Lupe started off doing just fine, following an animal trail at\u00a0the bottom of the side valley.\u00a0 However, when SPHP left the animal trail to start gaining elevation faster on the NE side of the valley, Lupe hesitated.\u00a0 She remembered all the cactus around on her recent trip to the <a href=\"http:\/\/adventuresoflupe.com\/?p=5247\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>Wildcat Hills of Nebraska with mountaineer Jobe Wymore<\/strong><\/span><\/a>.\u00a0 There had also been cactus around on her\u00a0last couple of\u00a0Black Hills, SD Expeditions, too.<\/p>\n<p>Lupe didn&#8217;t want to leave the safety of the animal trail.\u00a0 Even though SPHP didn&#8217;t see any cactus, it took some persuading to convince\u00a0Lupe to keep going.\u00a0 Lupe repeatedly sat down and lagged behind.\u00a0 She only came when SPHP got too far away, or stopped to sit down and &#8220;check the maps&#8221;.\u00a0 A few times, SPHP had to carry her.<\/p>\n<p>Fortunately, it wasn&#8217;t far to Surveyor&#8217;s Hill, and there really didn&#8217;t seem to be any cactus around.\u00a0 Lupe gradually regained her confidence.\u00a0 Once she was up on the ridge at the base of Surveyor&#8217;s Hill, she\u00a0started feeling secure enough to\u00a0lead SPHP the rest of the way up.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_5467\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-5467\" style=\"width: 660px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/IMG_0788.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-5467\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/IMG_0788-1024x768.jpg?resize=660%2C495\" alt=\"Lupe nears Surveyor's Hill. Photo taken looking NNW using the telephoto lens.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>On the short trek back to the G6, Lupe&#8217;s confidence continued to build.\u00a0 Instead of encountering cactus, she saw a squirrel!\u00a0 All the painful thoughts of cactus disappeared, wiped out in an instant by the exciting squirrel.\u00a0 With the squirrel&#8217;s help, by 2:34 PM (58\u00b0F) Lupe was back at the G6, and on her way to <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.peakbagger.com\/peak.aspx?pid=70651\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Red Butte<\/span> <\/a><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">(5,500 ft.)<\/span><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>SPHP parked the G6 again down in Gillette Canyon, at the junction of USFS Roads No. 281 &amp; No. 281.1V.\u00a0 Red Butte was only a little over 0.5 mile WNW as the crow flies.\u00a0 On the first part of the journey, Lupe and SPHP followed No. 281.1V.\u00a0 Red Butte was soon in sight across a big field.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_5473\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-5473\" style=\"width: 660px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/IMG_0796.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-5473\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/IMG_0796-1024x768.jpg?resize=660%2C495\" alt=\"Red Butte from near USFS Road No. 281.1V. Photo looks WNW.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Lupe and SPHP stayed on No. 281.1V as it crossed a big field heading for Red Butte.\u00a0 When the road reached the trees, it started gaining elevation.\u00a0 Lupe and SPHP stayed on the road only until it started curving NE, then Lupe left it climbing NW directly up the forested ridge.<\/p>\n<p>Once again, Lupe was reluctant to follow SPHP off the road.\u00a0\u00a0Her fear of cactus returned.\u00a0 Again and again, she stopped and watched while SPHP plodded away.\u00a0 When SPHP got too far ahead, she waited for SPHP to stop and look back at her.\u00a0 Then she ran to catch up.\u00a0 In this manner, Lupe and SPHP progressed steadily, though more slowly than normal.<\/p>\n<p>When Lupe reached the top of the ridgeline, she turned WSW following\u00a0the ridge\u00a0toward the summit of Red Butte.\u00a0 SPHP still saw no cactus around.\u00a0 Lupe&#8217;s confidence grew.<\/p>\n<p>The steepest part of the climb came at the end.\u00a0 The summit of Red Butte was up on top of a hill thickly covered with 3 foot high bushes.\u00a0 Lupe liked the bushes, and the many pathways between them.\u00a0 She forgot all about cactus, sniffing her way through the bush maze.\u00a0 For SPHP, the bushes were more of a pain to navigate, but soon both\u00a0Lupe and SPHP stood on the summit of Red Butte.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_5474\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-5474\" style=\"width: 660px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/IMG_0797.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-5474\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/IMG_0797-1024x768.jpg?resize=660%2C495\" alt=\"Lupe at the summit of Red Butte. Photo looks N.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The true summit of Red Butte was near the ENE end of the\u00a0short summit ridge close to where Lupe initially reached the top.\u00a0 However, there was another high point off to the WSW.\u00a0 After visiting the true summit, Lupe and SPHP headed over to\u00a0this second high point\u00a0to take a look at things from there.\u00a0 On the way, SPHP suddenly spied a large patch of cactus ahead.<\/p>\n<p>Right away, SPHP stopped\u00a0Lupe and put her leash on.\u00a0 Lupe had been so engrossed with exploring the maze of bushes, she didn&#8217;t yet realize there was any cactus around.\u00a0 To make certain Lupe didn&#8217;t have a bad experience, SPHP\u00a0carried her over the cactus patch to reach the second high point.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_5477\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-5477\" style=\"width: 660px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/IMG_0800.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-5477\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/IMG_0800-1024x768.jpg?resize=660%2C495\" alt=\"Lupe on the slightly lower WSW high point of Red Butte. Photo looks N.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>It was starting to look\u00a0like Lupe and SPHP might have no choice.\u00a0 The large steep cracks in the rocks on the E face might be the only possible way up.\u00a0 However, as Lupe drew near the S end of the W face, suddenly there was a break in the sheer cliff wall.\u00a0 A ramp of relatively easy terrain led all the way up to the top of the massive rock formation.<\/p>\n<p>Surprisingly, the\u00a0first rocks Lupe encountered on top were not yellow at all.\u00a0 The true summit, which is closer to the S end of the mountain, consisted of a very different, but\u00a0interesting gray-pink rock full of holes, lines and pockets.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_5483\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-5483\" style=\"width: 660px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/IMG_0806.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-5483\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/IMG_0806-1024x768.jpg?resize=660%2C495\" alt=\"Lupe on a dead tree very close to the summit of Yellow Butte. Photo looks N (and up!).<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Lupe returned to USFS Road No. 281.2Y.\u00a0 She followed it E to No. 281.1V again, which she stayed on all the rest of the way back to the G6 (5:49 PM, 55\u00b0F).<\/p>\n<p>SPHP&#8217;s original plan had been for Lupe to head on over to <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.peakbagger.com\/peak.aspx?pid=70649\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Wildcat Peak<\/span><\/a> <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">(5,500 ft.)<\/span><\/strong>\u00a0next, but the very late start earlier in the day meant it was already too late now\u00a0for that adventure.\u00a0 Lupe would get a chance\u00a0to climb Wildcat Peak tomorrow.\u00a0 In the meantime, Lupe had another fun alternative close to Wildcat Peak.\u00a0 She could go to the <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><u><\/u><strong><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"http:\/\/peakbagger.com\/peak.aspx?pid=27442\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Elk Benchmark<\/a><\/strong><\/span><strong> <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">(5,669 ft.)<\/span><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Lupe had been to the Elk Benchmark once before, a little over a year ago on <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><a style=\"color: #ff0000;\" href=\"http:\/\/adventuresoflupe.com\/?p=546\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Black Hills SD Expedition No. 125<\/strong><\/a><\/span>.\u00a0\u00a0 Both Lupe and SPHP had a great time there then.\u00a0 The Elk Benchmark is located at the NW corner of Elk Mountain,\u00a0a high ridge on the border with Wyoming.\u00a0\u00a0 The ridge runs N\/S for several miles.\u00a0 The S end of the ridge is heavily forested, but years ago a forest fire burned virtually all the trees off the\u00a0N end.<\/p>\n<p>USFS Road No. 118 passes very close to the true summit at\u00a0Elk Benchmark on its way to the Elk Mountain Lookout Tower (5,662 ft.), so it&#8217;s possible to drive almost right to it.\u00a0 However, a year ago\u00a0Lupe and SPHP had found it much more fun to travel the broad treeless portion of the ridge on paw and foot.\u00a0 Lupe enjoyed chasing the numerous rabbits, and SPHP loved the big sweeping views.<\/p>\n<p>Since USFS Road No. 118 traverses the entire length of Elk Mountain, Lupe and SPHP could stay out long after dark without worrying about getting lost.\u00a0 Repeating\u00a0Lupe&#8217;s prior journey to the Elk Benchmark\u00a0would be a\u00a0perfect way to end the day!\u00a0 So when Lupe reached the G6 again after her visit to Red and Yellow Buttes, it was time to press on to Elk Mountain.<\/p>\n<p>By 6:30 PM (54\u00b0F), SPHP was parking the G6 at the junction of USFS Roads No. 118 and No. 118.1C.\u00a0 This junction\u00a0was up on top of the\u00a0Elk Mountain ridge at the S end of the burned area.\u00a0 Elk Benchmark was still at least 2 miles N.\u00a0 Before heading N, Lupe and SPHP\u00a0made a short trek\u00a0over\u00a0to the E side of the ridge for a\u00a0look at Wildcat Peak to the S.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_5490\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-5490\" style=\"width: 660px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/IMG_0813.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-5490\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/IMG_0813-1024x768.jpg?resize=660%2C495\" alt=\"Wildcat Peak is seen in the sunlight straight above Lupe. On\u00a0Lupe&#8217;s trip here more than a year earlier on 4-4-15, Lupe and SPHP had gone on to see the Elk Mountain Lookout Tower, and another nearby high point featuring the Most Colorful Rock.\u00a0 This time, it\u00a0would have gotten dark before Lupe could get over there, so there wasn&#8217;t any point in going.<\/p>\n<p>Lupe and SPHP just relaxed\u00a0enjoying the glorious view disappeared.\u00a0 Then Lupe led the way, resuming her futile, but\u00a0enormously entertaining\u00a0rabbit hunts.\u00a0 Darkness grew in the E.\u00a0 The orange glow in the W faded.\u00a0 Gradually it became harder and harder for SPHP to see the happily roaming Carolina Dog.\u00a0 She became a phantom of the night, disappearing and reappearing at will.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">A huge, white moon obliterated most stars and cast ghostly shadows.\u00a0 Tomorrow the moon would be full.\u00a0 The long trek back was marvelous.\u00a0 At 9:08 PM, it was over.\u00a0 Lupe and SPHP were back at the G6, but to Lupe&#8217;s delight, she wasn&#8217;t going home.\u00a0 Together, Lupe and SPHP would spend this night on Elk Mountain!<a
