Bluff National Monument &#038; Wildcat Hills, the Scotts Bluff County Highpoint, Nebraska (4-3-16)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A squirrel!\u00a0 Lupe bounded after it.\u00a0 The squirrel scrambled\u00a0to safety up\u00a0a big tree in Gardner Park.\u00a0 Lupe stood below, her front paws propped up against the tree trunk\u00a0as she tried to leap up after that elusive rodent, while barking furiously the entire time.<\/p>\n<p>It was early, too early.\u00a0 The sun wasn&#8217;t even up yet, although it was light out.\u00a0 Lupe had to stop making such a ruckus.\u00a0 People live right across the street from the park.\u00a0 SPHP persuaded Lupe to give up on the squirrel and return to the G6.<\/p>\n<p>At least it was encouraging to see that Lupe&#8217;s paws\u00a0weren&#8217;t too terribly sore.\u00a0 In her excitement over the squirrel, even Lupe had momentarily forgotten about all the horrible cactus she had braved yesterday on <strong><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"http:\/\/peakbagger.com\/peak.aspx?pid=31730\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Wildcat Mountain<\/a><\/span> <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">(5,025 ft.)<\/span><\/strong> while peakbagging with her new friend <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><a style=\"color: #ff0000;\" href=\"http:\/\/adventuresoflupe.com\/?p=5247\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Jobe Wymore<\/strong><\/a><\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>It had been windy nearly all night, but\u00a0the air was still\u00a0now.\u00a0 The wind was a good thing!\u00a0 SPHP&#8217;s boots were dry again.\u00a0 SPHP retrieved them from the roof of the G6 and put them on.\u00a0 Jobe was gone.\u00a0 He was on his way back to Denver today for the flight back home to the Portland, Oregon area.\u00a0 Well, what now Loopster?<\/p>\n<p>Lupe was in Gering, Nebraska, so it was pretty easy to decide what was next.\u00a0 Just W of Gering is Scotts Bluff National Monument.\u00a0 Scotts Bluff was a famous landmark S of the North Platte River back in the days of the Oregon and Mormon Trails.\u00a0 The monument features several easy trails, and even a road to the Bluff National Monument well before it opens for visitors at 8 AM.\u00a0 Lupe and SPHP wandered around for a while\u00a0outside the visitor center.\u00a0 High light-colored bluffs stood brilliantly Photo looks S.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>There were impressive views in every direction as Lupe explored the North Overlook Trail.\u00a0 She visited the Scotts Bluff high point, and a number of overlooks along the way.\u00a0 If Lupe had been here 160 years ago, she could have seen wagons and oxen down below\u00a0traveling slowly\u00a0W\u00a0up the very wide, flat\u00a0North Platt River valley.<\/p>\n<p>From near the N end of the North Overlook Trail, Lupe could see <strong><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"http:\/\/peakbagger.com\/peak.aspx?pid=5567\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Laramie Peak<\/a><\/span> <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">(10,272 ft.)<\/span><\/strong>.\u00a0 It was 90 miles away in Wyoming, and very faint on the WNW horizon.\u00a0 <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong><a style=\"color: #ff0000;\" href=\"http:\/\/adventuresoflupe.com\/?p=1834\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Laramie Peak<\/a><\/strong><\/span> was the first mountain Lupe had climbed on her summer of 2015 Dingo Vacation to Wyoming, Colorado and Utah.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_5266\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-5266\" style=\"width: 660px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/IMG_0651.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-5266\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-5266\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/IMG_0651-1024x768.jpg?resize=660%2C495\" alt=\"Gering, Nebraska from Scotts Bluff. Photo looks NW.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Lupe and SPHP were now on the way to <strong><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"http:\/\/peakbagger.com\/peak.aspx?pid=6278\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Wildcat Hills<\/a><\/span> <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">(4,940 ft.)<\/span><\/strong>, the Scotts Bluff county high point.\u00a0 The first 6 miles of Carter Canyon Road were paved and went due W.\u00a0 Carter Canyon Road turned S at the end of the pavement.\u00a0 The dirt road gradually turned W again as it\u00a0went several miles up scenic Carter Canyon to arrive at a &#8220;Y&#8221; near the top of the ridge.<\/p>\n<p>To the right was Summit Ranch Road.\u00a0 A sign indicated Robidoux Pioneer Graves were in that direction.\u00a0 To the left, Carter Canyon Road continued S.\u00a0 Wildcat Hills was only a couple miles farther to the SSW, so Lupe and SPHP stayed on Carter Canyon Road.\u00a0 It swung up around a little hillside revealing a huge home on the right, which is apparently the Summit Ranch headquarters.\u00a0 Off to the SE was a tall tower on a hill.<\/p>\n<p>SPHP expected to be able to drive very close to the summit of Wildcat Hills, but about a mile short of the destination reached a snowbank\u00a0covering the road.\u00a0 It didn&#8217;t look like anything the G6 could get through.\u00a0 A short test drive into it instantly revealed that the G6 would certainly get high-centered.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_5276\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-5276\" style=\"width: 660px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/IMG_0661.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-5276\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-5276\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/IMG_0661-1024x768.jpg?resize=660%2C495\" alt=\"Hmm, definitely a showstopper for the G6.
