{"id":52149,"date":"2024-03-19T08:10:50","date_gmt":"2024-03-19T14:10:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/adventuresoflupe.com\/?p=52149"},"modified":"2024-05-12T23:43:09","modified_gmt":"2024-05-13T05:43:09","slug":"canjilon-mountain-san-juan-mountains-new-mexico-6-25-23","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/adventuresoflupe.com\/?p=52149","title":{"rendered":"Canjilon Mountain, San Juan Mountains, New Mexico (6-25-23)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>Days 18 &amp; 19 of Lupe&#8217;s 1st Summer of 2023 Dingo Vacation to Colorado &amp; New Mexico!<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>6-24-23, 6:06 AM, 35\u00baF &#8211; start of USFS Road No. 877, W of Lake City<\/em> &#8211; Bleary-eyed, Lupe stared at SPHP in disbelief.<\/p>\n<p><em>Up already?\u00a0 Why?<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Oh, I don&#8217;t know, Loop.\u00a0 Woke up feeling surprisingly good, except for my smashed R pinky toe that the rock fell on yesterday.\u00a0 Even it&#8217;s doing better than it was.\u00a0 Thought I&#8217;d straighten out the RAV4 a bit before we head out.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Where to next, SPHP?\u00a0 We aren&#8217;t climbing any mountains today, are we?<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Not exactly sure yet, Loop, except for S.\u00a0 We&#8217;re done in Colorado for this Dingo Vacation, so we&#8217;ll be heading into northern New Mexico.\u00a0 Haven&#8217;t decided which peak we&#8217;ll be going for yet, though.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Can you make it an easier one, SPHP?\u00a0 Maybe something without any frigid, frightening fords this time?<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>I&#8217;ll see what I can do, Loopster.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>SE of Lake City, Hwy 149 climbed through spectacular scenery clear up to <strong>Slumgullion Pass <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">(11,361 ft.)<\/span><\/strong> before going over less dramatic <strong>Spring Creek Pass <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">(10,898 ft.)<\/span><\/strong>, and dropping down into the Rio Grande River valley.\u00a0 This was all incredibly beautiful territory, but by the time Lupe arrived in Del Norte, she was out in the flats again.\u00a0 A short romp in North Park led to a view of the big river, which was full to the point of overflowing &#8211; not surprising at all, given the incredible amount of snow Lupe had seen in the San Juans.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_52106\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-52106\" style=\"width: 1651px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/IMG_1277-scaled.jpg?ssl=1\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-52106\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/IMG_1277-scaled.jpg?resize=660%2C495&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"660\" height=\"495\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/IMG_1277-scaled.jpg?w=1651&amp;ssl=1 1651w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/IMG_1277-scaled.jpg?resize=300%2C225&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/IMG_1277-scaled.jpg?w=1320&amp;ssl=1 1320w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 660px) 100vw, 660px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-52106\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><strong>Rio Grande River<\/strong> from North Park in Del Norte. Photo looks NNE.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><em>Hmm.\u00a0 This display doesn&#8217;t actually have anything to do with any trails, Loopster.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Not terribly surprising, SPHP.\u00a0 Few trails start at the tops of mountains.\u00a0 So, what is it about?<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Says Carson National Forest at the top, and below that shows 3 old photos and a historic note that is itself weathering away.\u00a0 Can&#8217;t make all of it out, but here&#8217;s what it says, Loop:<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>&#8220;This restored cabin is the oldest surviving fire lookout structure in the SW.\u00a0 The cabin and now dismantled fire tower were built around 1910.\u00a0 Being the highest point around (10,913 feet) and very open, lightning strikes frequently up here.\u00a0 In the summer of 1922 Victor Ortega and his family lived in the tiny cabin while he watched for forest fires from the tower.\u00a0 One afternoon, lightning struck the cabin and the tower, killing Victor on the second strike.\u00a0 The tower &#8230;. illegible &#8230; Photo looks WNW.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><em>Eh.\u00a0 Red Hill&#8217;s hardly worth it, Loopster.\u00a0 Saw from Canjilon Mountain that the whole hill is forested, so even if we reach the top, we won&#8217;t see a thing.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Then why did you even suggest it, SPHP?<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Thought it would be easy to tag the high point, Loop.\u00a0 Would have been, too, if not for all this deadfall.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Lupe didn&#8217;t care.\u00a0 Battling deadfall wasn&#8217;t the Carolina Dog&#8217;s favorite thing, either.\u00a0 Besides, she&#8217;d already made it to Canjilon Mountain, her main objective.\u00a0 Slipping back under the fence, then wandering roughly SSW, it was farther back to USFS Road No. 274B than SPHP expected.\u00a0 However, Lupe had a blast exploring the meadows and more open forests along the way.<\/p>\n<p>An old cow path eventually led to a salt lick from which No. 274B was visible 100 feet away.\u00a0 During the rest of the road hike return, SPHP kept gathering Lupe treasures until it wasn&#8217;t possible to carry any more.<\/p>\n<p><em>6-25-23, 3:53 PM, 77\u00baF, USFS Road No. 124 &#8211;
