{"id":51478,"date":"2024-03-01T08:10:58","date_gmt":"2024-03-01T15:10:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/adventuresoflupe.com\/?p=51478"},"modified":"2024-05-12T23:40:55","modified_gmt":"2024-05-13T05:40:55","slug":"san-luis-peak-san-juan-mountains-colorado-6-21-23","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/adventuresoflupe.com\/?p=51478","title":{"rendered":"San Luis Peak, San Juan Mountains, Colorado (6-21-23)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>Days 14 &amp; 15 of Lupe&#8217;s 1st Summer of 2023 Dingo Vacation to Colorado &amp; New Mexico!<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>6-20-23, mid-morning<\/em> &#8211; Up bright and early,\u00a0 Lupe had made it down out of the mountains and back to Monte Vista, the little San Luis valley town that had become somewhat of a favorite, in time for breakfast.\u00a0 Now she stood peering into the murky green water of the canal near the high school and golf course.<\/p>\n<p><em>Not taking the plunge this time around, Looper?<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>I&#8217;ve learned my lesson, SPHP.\u00a0 You never did leap in to save me.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Would have, but you managed to rescue yourself.\u00a0 Can&#8217;t say that I&#8217;m not glad you did.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Returning to shadier streets, the walk continued.\u00a0 Lupe waited until she was back in the RAV4 to lap up water SPHP poured into her silver bowl, then snoozed or watched squirrels in the big cottonwoods.\u00a0 Meanwhile, SPHP feasted on what remained of the orange juice and lemon Danishes left over from breakfast while working on the trip journal.<\/p>\n<p>By noon, the American Dingo was on her way out of Monte Vista again, this time heading N on Hwy 285.\u00a0 Turning W at Saguache, the afternoon drive on Hwy 114 up the unspoiled, arid Saguache Creek valley was very scenic.\u00a0 Blue flowers bloomed in abundance in a valley so broad that Saguache Creek seemed seriously under-sized for it.<\/p>\n<p>20 miles on Hwy 114 led to a L turn onto County Road NN14, a gravel road in superb condition that continued W, ultimately going over 10,032 foot Cochetopa Pass before descending again.\u00a0 20 miles on NN14 brought Lupe to Upper Dome Lake, where 5 pelicans floated on the rippling blue water.\u00a0 SPHP initially missed USFS Road No. 794, because it was signed as Saguache County Road 15GG at the turn.<\/p>\n<p>No. 794 wasn&#8217;t bad as it wound SSW toward a collection of high peaks still sporting some snow, but wasn&#8217;t the gravel super highway County Road NN14 had been, either, especially after passing a road grader that was smoothing out some issues.\u00a0 7 miles in, at a curve near Cold Spring, the most exciting thing ever happened.\u00a0 Coming from the R, several sheep suddenly crossed the road right in front of the RAV4.<\/p>\n<p>Lupe was beside herself with joy and enthusiasm!\u00a0 Barking furiously, she leapt frantically up and down on her pink blanket, claws scraping the RAV4&#8217;s dashboard.\u00a0 Exciting, no doubt, but Lupe had seen sheep before.\u00a0 What was different this time was how close they were, and that they kept coming!\u00a0 A continuous stream of sheep poured across the road, as the Carolina Dog became ever more hysterical.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_51469\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-51469\" style=\"width: 1651px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/IMG_7082-scaled.jpg?ssl=1\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-51469\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/IMG_7082-scaled.jpg?resize=660%2C495&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"660\" height=\"495\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/IMG_7082-scaled.jpg?w=1651&amp;ssl=1 1651w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/IMG_7082-scaled.jpg?resize=300%2C225&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/IMG_7082-scaled.jpg?w=1320&amp;ssl=1 1320w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 660px) 100vw, 660px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-51469\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Sheep! The most exciting thing ever!<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Tens, scores, hundreds, maybe thousands of sheep crossed the road, many glancing nervously toward the maniac in the RAV4.\u00a0 Still they came!\u00a0 Pandemonium reigned.\u00a0 After 15 minutes, when a couple of large sheepherding dogs appeared, and one trotted over and put his huge paws up on Lupe&#8217;s window, peering in to find out what all the fuss was about, the American Dingo completely lost her mind, transforming into a foaming-at-the-mouth savage, the definition of ferocity!<\/p>\n<p>At the very end, a cowboy brought up the rear.\u00a0 Obviously a good guy, since he was on a white horse, the cowboy rode calmly behind the last baaing sheep, as he and his dogs followed them into a valley.\u00a0 Trembling, with sides heaving, Lupe gasped.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_51472\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-51472\" style=\"width: 1651px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/IMG_7085-scaled.jpg?ssl=1\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-51472\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/IMG_7085-scaled.jpg?resize=660%2C495&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"660\" height=\"495\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/IMG_7085-scaled.jpg?w=1651&amp;ssl=1 1651w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/IMG_7085-scaled.jpg?resize=300%2C225&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/IMG_7085-scaled.jpg?w=1320&amp;ssl=1 1320w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 660px) 100vw, 660px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-51472\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Tail end of the epic sheep drive.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><em>SPHP, please!\u00a0 Water!<\/em><\/p>\n<p>And thus, the magnificent sheep drive of Saguache County Road 15GG passed into the annals of history.\u00a0 As far as American Dingo legend has it, there was never anything like it, before or since.<\/p>\n<p>Continuing on, the mountains were closer now.\u00a0 SPHP suggested getting out for a look.<\/p>\n<p><em>What mountains are these, SPHP?<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Search me, Looper.\u00a0 We&#8217;ll figure that out later.\u00a0 They&#8217;re all part of the San Juan Mountains, though.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Well, do you at least know which ones we&#8217;re going to climb?<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Sure do!\u00a0 Only one &#8211; <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/peakbagger.com\/peak.aspx?pid=5874\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">San Luis Peak<\/span><\/a> <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">(14,014 ft.)<\/span><\/strong>.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Oh!\u00a0 A 14&#8217;er!<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Yup.\u00a0 Only the 3rd one we&#8217;ll have ever climbed, Loopster.\u00a0 Supposed to be relatively easy.\u00a0 A long march, but with a trail all the way to the top.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Sounds awesome, SPHP!\u00a0 Which one is San Luis Peak?<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Oh, I don&#8217;t know.\u00a0 Probably one of the ones in back, if we can see it at all from here.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Well, don&#8217;t worry!\u00a0 Which ever one it is, we&#8217;re going to get there, SPHP!\u00a0 Been ages since we&#8217;ve done a 14&#8217;er!<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Hah!\u00a0 Maybe.\u00a0 A lot depends on whether we can even get to the trailhead, Looper.\u00a0 I understand there are 2 creek fords along the way.\u00a0 With all the snow in the San Juans this year, the streams might well be too dangerous for the RAV4 to cross.<\/em><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_51417\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-51417\" style=\"width: 1651px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/IMG_1160-scaled.jpg?ssl=1\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-51417\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/IMG_1160-scaled.jpg?resize=660%2C495&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"660\" height=\"495\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/IMG_1160-scaled.jpg?w=1651&amp;ssl=1 1651w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/IMG_1160-scaled.jpg?resize=300%2C225&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/IMG_1160-scaled.jpg?w=1320&amp;ssl=1 1320w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 660px) 100vw, 660px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-51417\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><strong>Organ Mountain<\/strong> (L), <strong>San Luis Peak<\/strong> (R of Center), <strong>Baldy Alto<\/strong> (R), and <strong>Stewart Peak<\/strong> (far R) from <strong>USFS Road No. 794<\/strong>. Photo looks SE.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>No. 794 wound up over a big ridge then down the other side for another mile or two before SPHP passed the Stewart Creek Trail on the R.\u00a0 Not much room to park there, but 0.5 mile farther there was plenty of space at the Eddiesville campground and trailhead.<\/p>\n<p><em>6-20-23, 3:12 PM, Eddiesville<\/em> &#8211; An outhouse, 2 vehicles, and a pickup truck with a horse trailer were at the end of USFS Road No. 794 when the Carolina Dog arrived, but for hours, no one else was around.\u00a0 After a late lunch, she explored beyond the end of the road far enough to get a look at the Cochetopa River valley.\u00a0 SPHP then spent the rest of the afternoon working on the trip journal while Lupe snoozed on her pink blanket.<\/p>\n<p>Toward evening a few people arrived, set up tents, and cooked a meal &#8211; 3 CDT&#8217;ers with a dog named Mona, who had just climbed San Luis Peak, and a couple intent upon tagging their 33rd 14&#8217;er tomorrow.<\/p>\n<p><em>Gosh, SPHP!\u00a0 The Continental Divide Trail goes over San Luis Peak?\u00a0 Maybe we&#8217;ll see Footsie or Svie tomorrow?<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>From what I can gather, San Luis Peak is an optional route along the CDT, Loop.\u00a0 Don&#8217;t think Footsie or Svie can possibly be this far from <a href=\"https:\/\/adventuresoflupe.com\/?p=50895\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>Long Trek Mountain<\/strong><\/span><\/a> yet, but it sure would be fun to run into them again!<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The horses and cowboys didn&#8217;t return until after dark.\u00a0 Half an hour spent loading, and the red taillights of the horse trailer vanished into the night, leaving only stars twinkling silently in the heavens above.<\/p>\n<p><em>6-21-23, 7:06 AM, 45\u00baF<\/em> &#8211; The CDT&#8217;ers and hikers were just beginning to stir when Lupe left Eddiesville trotting W back up USFS Road No. 794.\u00a0 Reaching the start of Stewart Creek Trail No. 470, SPHP was surprised to see several vehicles already parked along the side of the road.\u00a0 After a quick glance at the posted information, it was <em>Onward!\u00a0 Puppy, ho!<\/em><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_51418\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-51418\" style=\"width: 1651px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/IMG_1161-scaled.jpg?ssl=1\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-51418\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/IMG_1161-scaled.jpg?resize=660%2C495&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"660\" height=\"495\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/IMG_1161-scaled.jpg?w=1651&amp;ssl=1 1651w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/IMG_1161-scaled.jpg?resize=300%2C225&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/IMG_1161-scaled.jpg?w=1320&amp;ssl=1 1320w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 660px) 100vw, 660px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-51418\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">About ready to leave <strong>Eddiesville<\/strong>. Photo looks SSW.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><em>Is that where we&#8217;re going, SPHP?<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Yes, indeedy, Loopster.\u00a0 Before long, the trail&#8217;s going to cross tributaries of Stewart Creek, then snake up to the top of that enormous ridge.\u00a0 Once we get up there, San Luis Peak will only be another mile.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Oh, so not so far then, but still a big climb?<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>You&#8217;ve got it, Looper.\u00a0 We&#8217;ve already come a long way, but we&#8217;ve still got nearly 1,700 feet of elevation gain to go.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>How far have we gone so far, SPHP?<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Distance-wise, the Peakbagger app says 5.6 miles, but it exaggerates some, and that&#8217;s from Eddiesville.\u00a0 Still, the sign at the start of the trail said it was only 5.5 miles to San Luis Peak.\u00a0 Don&#8217;t think that can possibly be right, except maybe as the crow flies.\u00a0 Got to be longer than that.\u00a0 Elevation-wise, we&#8217;ve already gained 1,900 feet, so we&#8217;re only a little over halfway.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Continuing on, the trail descended into the willows, which were only a few feet tall here, and soon led to the main tributary of Stewart Creek, a shallow, clear-running stream emerging from beneath rapidly melting snowfields.\u00a0 After an easy ford or rock hop, Stewart Creek Trail No. 470 then started up the giant ridge to the S, at times crossing the snowfields, much to the Carolina Dog&#8217;s delight.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_51436\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-51436\" style=\"width: 1650px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/IMG_1179-scaled.jpg?ssl=1\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-51436\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/IMG_1179-scaled.jpg?resize=660%2C880&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"660\" height=\"880\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/IMG_1179-scaled.jpg?w=1650&amp;ssl=1 1650w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/IMG_1179-scaled.jpg?resize=225%2C300&amp;ssl=1 225w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/IMG_1179-scaled.jpg?w=1320&amp;ssl=1 1320w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 660px) 100vw, 660px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-51436\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Crossing the <strong>main tributary of Stewart Creek<\/strong>. Photo looks SW.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Upon gaining the top of the broad ridge, it sloped up toward the W.\u00a0 Lupe climbed only a little higher before SPHP suggested another rest break.<\/p>\n<p>Seated on scree and tundra, SPHP sat petting Lupe while doing deep breathing exercises.
