{"id":4946,"date":"2016-03-15T08:10:04","date_gmt":"2016-03-15T14:10:04","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/adventuresoflupe.com\/?p=4946"},"modified":"2020-09-22T14:07:00","modified_gmt":"2020-09-22T20:07:00","slug":"black-hills-sd-expedition-no-161-mount-theodore-roosevelt-polo-peak-green-mountain-elkhorn-peak-3-12-16","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/adventuresoflupe.com\/?p=4946","title":{"rendered":"Black Hills, SD Expedition No. 161 &#8211; Mount Theodore Roosevelt, Polo Peak, Green Mountain &#038; Elkhorn Peak (3-12-16)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Well, it happened again, and at the exact same spot.\u00a0 Lupe was on her way to Mount Theodore Roosevelt, but the G6 wasn&#8217;t going to make it to the parking lot near the summit.\u00a0 Even though temperatures have been way above normal in the Black Hills for weeks, snow and ice covered the road ahead.\u00a0 The G6 would probably make it through OK, but probably wasn&#8217;t good enough.\u00a0 Fortunately, there was a\u00a0spot next to\u00a0the road where SPHP could park (8:11 AM, 55\u00b0F).<\/p>\n<p>Nearly a year ago, Lupe had come to <strong><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"http:\/\/peakbagger.com\/peak.aspx?pid=27449\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Mount Theodore Roosevelt<\/a><\/span> <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">(5,680 ft.)<\/span><\/strong>\u00a0on <strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><a style=\"color: #ff0000;\" href=\"http:\/\/adventuresoflupe.com\/?p=367\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Black Hills, SD Expedition No. 123<\/a><\/span><\/strong>.\u00a0 Back then, the snow was considerably deeper.\u00a0 A\u00a0red car had been abandoned on the road, high centered and incapable of moving.\u00a0 Even though conditions were better now, they weren&#8217;t good enough.\u00a0 SPHP didn&#8217;t want to chance it.\u00a0 No harm in using paws and feet to go the extra 0.33 mile to the parking lot.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_4909\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4909\" style=\"width: 660px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/IMG_0456.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-4909\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-4909\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/IMG_0456-1024x768.jpg?resize=660%2C495\" alt=\"Lupe, freshly damp from rolling in the snow. the trail divides and makes a loop.\u00a0 Lupe and SPHP took the SW part of the loop, which features a nice view of <strong><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"http:\/\/peakbagger.com\/peak.aspx?pid=19804\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Deer Mountain<\/a><\/span>\u00a0<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">(6,652 ft.)<\/span><\/strong>\u00a0and <strong><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"http:\/\/peakbagger.com\/peak.aspx?pid=6224\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Terry Peak<\/a><\/span> <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">(7,064 ft.) <\/span><\/strong>to the SW.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_4914\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4914\" Roosevelt.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>A couple was just leaving the Friendship Tower as Lupe and SPHP approached.\u00a0 They stopped to chat briefly with SPHP.\u00a0 They commented on what a nice day it was, and then pointed at a discarded plastic water bottle on the snow.\u00a0 What a shame it is that people have the energy to bring stuff up here, but don&#8217;t bother to take it with them when they leave!\u00a0 SPHP agreed.<\/p>\n<p>The couple then\u00a0left empty-handed on their way\u00a0back to their truck, leaving the water bottle behind.\u00a0 Hmmm!\u00a0 It wasn&#8217;t their fault\u00a0the water bottle\u00a0was there, of course.\u00a0 They weren&#8217;t the problem, but then again, they weren&#8217;t the solution, either.\u00a0 SPHP resolved to pick\u00a0the water bottle\u00a0up, if it was still there later in the day when Lupe returned.\u00a0 No sense carting it all over the mountains.<\/p>\n<p>Lupe and SPHP climbed up the steep, narrow circular staircase to Photo looks N.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Lupe had to go down the boulder field to get to Polo Peak.\u00a0 The rocks were only of modest size.\u00a0 Even some of the larger ones were loose and tippy.\u00a0 It wasn&#8217;t hard going down, just a little slow.\u00a0 Below the boulders, Lupe came to a fairly large snow field.\u00a0 The snow was up to 2 feet deep in a few places, but only 1 foot deep on average.<\/p>\n<p>Aspens were growing thickly at the lower end of the snow field.\u00a0 Below the aspens, Lupe entered a Ponderosa Pine forest.\u00a0 The N slopes of Mount Theodore Roosevelt\u00a0are quite steep, but Lupe was able to follow a spine of the mountain that remained walkable for SPHP.\u00a0 Lupe was losing elevation as fast as SPHP could go.\u00a0 The going was steepest as Lupe neared the bottom of Polo Gulch.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_4925\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4925\" style=\"width: 660px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/IMG_0472.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-4925\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-4925\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/IMG_0472-1024x768.jpg?resize=660%2C495\" alt=\"Lupe on her way down the N slopes of Mount Theodore Roosevelt. Photo looks N.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Lupe found a dirt road\u00a0at the base of\u00a0the steep slopes down in Polo Gulch.\u00a0 On the other side of the road was a 15 foot embankment leading down to a level area full of aspens,\u00a0a few\u00a0pines, and a great many leafless bushes and brambles.\u00a0 Lupe and SPHP could hear running water.\u00a0 A brief struggle through the nearly 2 foot deep snow and thick underbrush\u00a0brought Lupe to Polo Creek.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_4926\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4926\" style=\"width: 660px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/IMG_0474.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-4926\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-4926\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/IMG_0474-1024x768.jpg?resize=660%2C495\" alt=\"Lupe reaches Polo Creek. This part of Polo Creek may well be just a seasonal stream.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Polo Creek was in the sunlight where the snow had already melted.\u00a0 SPHP thought Lupe\u00a0might be thirsty by now, but she wasn&#8217;t.\u00a0 She had been busy eating snow.\u00a0 Lupe and SPHP crossed the stream.\u00a0\u00a0Lupe climbed a\u00a040 foot embankment on the other side.\u00a0 It wasn&#8217;t too steep, but there was a lot of underbrush in the forest.\u00a0 Even after Lupe reached flatter ground above Polo Creek, SPHP had to wind around through the dense vegetation.<\/p>\n<p>Before Lupe could begin her climb up Polo Peak, it looked like\u00a0she might have to lose some elevation\u00a0again\u00a0traversing\u00a0a small valley up ahead.\u00a0 It turned out she didn&#8217;t have to.\u00a0 Instead, Lupe came to another dirt road.\u00a0 Lupe and SPHP followed it, since\u00a0the road\u00a0was so much easier than going through the forest.\u00a0 The road headed NE gaining elevation slowly, but steadily.<\/p>\n<p>Before long, Lupe came to a very steep side road that\u00a0went N.\u00a0 A sign said this road was closed to motor vehicles to\u00a0encourage re-vegetation.\u00a0 Lupe and SPHP followed it.\u00a0 The road started down in the forest, but as Lupe gained elevation, the forest thinned and\u00a0finally gave way to scattered stands of pines.\u00a0 Lupe entered sunny meadows with big views.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_4927\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4927\" style=\"width: 660px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/IMG_0475.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-4927\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-4927\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/IMG_0475-1024x768.jpg?resize=660%2C495\" alt=\"Lupe reaches the meadows on the S end of Polo Peak. Photo looks N.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Green Mountain is only 0.5 mile from the N end of Polo Peak.\u00a0 The entire territory between the mountains is forested.\u00a0 Lupe went down the N slope of Polo Peak staying a bit toward the W.\u00a0 She crossed the saddle over to Green Mountain and started climbing again.<\/p>\n<p>SPHP wasn&#8217;t certain Lupe would find any views up on Green Mountain.\u00a0 From the S, it looked much more heavily forested than Polo Peak had been.\u00a0 There was only one little opening visible among the trees\u00a0near the top that had given SPHP at least\u00a0a little\u00a0hope that Lupe\u00a0might find a view in some direction.<\/p>\n<p>As Lupe neared the summit, it became clear that the top of Green Mountain was not completely hidden in a shady forest as SPHP expected.\u00a0 Beyond the band of trees around the S end, the summit was flat and\u00a0almost completely bare.\u00a0 Lupe had sweeping, unobstructed 180\u00b0 views to the N.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_4937\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4937\" style=\"width: 660px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/IMG_0487.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-4937\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-4937\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/IMG_0487-1024x768.jpg?resize=660%2C495\" alt=\"Part of the flat, bare top of Green Mountain. platform to the NW.\u00a0 At least a dozen people came and went.\u00a0 Lupe cooled off on the snow, while waiting for the crowds to leave.<\/p>\n<p>SPHP hadn&#8217;t forgotten the discarded water bottle.\u00a0 It was still there, plus a rusty beer can and some other trash near a picnic table.\u00a0 SPHP picked it all up and put it in the backpack.\u00a0 SPHP ate the last apple seated at the Dew\u00a0snowfield\u00a0again.\u00a0 SPHP had been picking up trash alongside the road and added the plastic Mountain Dew bottle to the collection.<\/p>\n<p>Even though it was still early, Lupe must have figured Expedition No. 161 was over when she arrived back at the G6\u00a0(3:07 PM, 66\u00b0F), but SPHP had a surprise in store for her.\u00a0 She was going to climb one more mountain today, one she had seen from Green Mountain.<\/p>\n<p>SPHP drove Lupe to Elkhorn Mountain.\u00a0 Lupe did seem surprised when SPHP parked the G6 again\u00a0(3:30 PM, 76\u00b0F).\u00a0 At first, she wasn&#8217;t sure if she was supposed to get out, or not.\u00a0 When SPHP encouraged her, she jumped out ready for action.<\/p>\n<p>Elkhorn Mountain looks like just a big rounded hill.\u00a0 SPHP hadn&#8217;t appreciated how BIG it really was.\u00a0 It took considerably\u00a0longer to get to the top than anticipated.\u00a0 Between the heat and the elevation gain, Lupe and SPHP went through the rest of the water supply.<\/p>\n<p>Up above the forest, Elkhorn Mountain really was beautiful in the slanting rays of the late afternoon sun.\u00a0 Some of the taller grass glowed an amazing orange.\u00a0 The 360\u00b0 views were wonderful.\u00a0\u00a0A bit of a breeze helped counter the heat.\u00a0 Lupe found what appeared to be a grave shortly before reaching the summit.<\/p>\n<figure Photo looks WSW.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Lupe and SPHP spent a bit of time at the summit of Elkhorn Mountain.\u00a0 It was a beautiful way to end the day, with a pleasant stroll back down\u00a0to the G6 ahead.\u00a0 When Lupe got back to the G6 (5:10 PM, 76\u00b0F), her peakbagging exploits on Expedition No. 161 were over, but SPHP still had a task in mind.<\/p>\n<p>There was still time to return to the junction of Crook Mountain Road (USFS Road No. 176) and\u00a0USFS Road No. 176.1A.\u00a0 This was where the G6 had been parked a week ago at the start of Lupe&#8217;s <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong><a style=\"color: #ff0000;\" href=\"http:\/\/adventuresoflupe.com\/?p=4859\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Black Hills, SD Expedition No. 160<\/a><\/strong><\/span> to <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.peakbagger.com\/peak.aspx?pid=66570\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Crook Mountain<\/span><\/a> <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">(4,930 ft.)<\/span><\/strong> \u00a0and <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.peakbagger.com\/peak.aspx?pid=68215\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Whitewood Peak<\/span><\/a> <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">(5,140 ft.)<\/span><\/strong>.\u00a0 The intersection had been strewn with all kinds of trash.\u00a0 SPHP didn&#8217;t have anything to put it all in back then, but now had 2 garbage bags in the trunk of the G6.<\/p>\n<p>Lupe barked enthusiastically at many deer, cows and horses on the way to USFS Road No. 176.1A.\u00a0 Once there, though, she had to stay in the G6 while SPHP gathered up the trash.\u00a0 There was broken glass around, and SPHP couldn&#8217;t be certain it had all been found.\u00a0 It only took a little more than 1 overflowing garbage bag to\u00a0hold all the trash\u00a0SPHP could find.\u00a0 It was almost dark out by the time Expedition No. 161 was really, truly over, and the American Dingo was on her way home.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_4945\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4945\" style=\"width: 660px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/IMG_0496.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-4945\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-4945\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/IMG_0496-1024x768.jpg?resize=660%2C495\" alt=\"Lupe at the summit of Elkhorn Peak.
