{"id":4859,"date":"2016-03-11T08:10:04","date_gmt":"2016-03-11T15:10:04","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/adventuresoflupe.com\/?p=4859"},"modified":"2020-09-22T14:02:56","modified_gmt":"2020-09-22T20:02:56","slug":"black-hills-sd-expedition-no-160-crook-mountain-whitewood-peak-3-5-16","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/adventuresoflupe.com\/?p=4859","title":{"rendered":"Black Hills, SD Expedition No. 160 &#8211; Crook Mountain &#038; Whitewood Peak (3-5-16)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Pathetic and disgusting!\u00a0 There were beer cans, bottles, boxes and other trash scattered around the forest near the intersection.\u00a0 SPHP had a\u00a0couple extra plastic Wal-Mart bags in the backpack, but they weren&#8217;t\u00a0nearly enough to tote away all this mess.\u00a0 That would easily require a full size garbage sack or two.<\/p>\n<p>It was all going to have to wait.\u00a0 SPHP would save the Wal-Mart bags for what Lupe found\u00a0during her explorations.\u00a0 If there was any room left, SPHP might gather up some of this stuff when Lupe returned at the end of the day.\u00a0 Lupe would be willing to curl up in the G6 for a rest\u00a0then.\u00a0 While SPHP\u00a0collected Lupe Treasures, she would need to be in the G6 so she didn&#8217;t get hurt.\u00a0 There was broken glass around, too.<\/p>\n<p>The G6 was parked at the intersection of Crook Mountain Road (USFS Road No. 176) and No. 176.1A (9:54 AM, 55\u00b0F).\u00a0 Lupe had two peakbagging goals ahead of her, <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.peakbagger.com\/peak.aspx?pid=66570\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Crook Mountain<\/span><\/a> <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">(4,930 ft.)<\/span><\/strong> and <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.peakbagger.com\/peak.aspx?pid=68215\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Whitewood Peak<\/span><\/a> <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">(5,140 ft.)<\/span><\/strong>.\u00a0 It was going to be another unseasonably warm day, close to record-setting again,\u00a0in a winter that had hardly even been winter.\u00a0 Only early March, and already SPHP was hoping it wasn&#8217;t going to be too hot!<\/p>\n<p>Lupe and SPHP took off on up No. 376.1A.\u00a0 There were a few patches of snow\u00a0and ice, but nothing too major.\u00a0 Clearly, there had been much more snow not too long ago.\u00a0 The road was quite soft.\u00a0 In some places, it was just a mucky red dirt mess.\u00a0 No. 176.1A headed SW for a little way, then turned N.<\/p>\n<p>Lupe had fun romping in the forest, but other than trees, there wasn&#8217;t much to see until No. 176.1A had gained a fair amount of elevation, and was starting to level out up on the E slopes of Crook Mountain.\u00a0 <strong><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"http:\/\/peakbagger.com\/peak.aspx?pid=6222\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Bear Butte<\/a><\/span> <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">(4,422 ft.)<\/span><\/strong> came into view rising up out on the prairie NE of Sturgis, SD.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_4829\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4829\" style=\"width: 660px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/IMG_0416.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-4829\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-4829\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/IMG_0416-1024x768.jpg?resize=660%2C495\" alt=\"Bear Butte NE of Sturgis, SD looks like a small volcano, but according to geologists, it never actually erupted. It is about 11 or 12 miles ENE of Crook Mountain.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-4832\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/IMG_0419-1024x768.jpg?resize=660%2C495\" alt=\"Bear Butte from USFS Road No. 376.1A on Crook Mountain, 3-5-16\" width=\"660\" height=\"495\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/IMG_0419.jpg?resize=1024%2C768&amp;ssl=1 1024w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/IMG_0419.jpg?resize=300%2C225&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/IMG_0419.jpg?resize=768%2C576&amp;ssl=1 768w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/IMG_0419.jpg?w=1651&amp;ssl=1 1651w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/IMG_0419.jpg?w=1320&amp;ssl=1 1320w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 660px) 100vw, 660px\" \/>Lupe and SPHP followed No. 176.1A as it wound around the E and then N side of Crook Mountain.\u00a0 The road was fairly level much of the way, gaining elevation very slowly.\u00a0 There were glimpses of lower hills and the prairie off to the NE, but there were enough trees along the road so there were seldom any really open views.\u00a0 There was quite a bit more snow on the road on the shady N side of the mountain, much to Lupe&#8217;s delight.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_4833\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4833\" style=\"width: 660px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/IMG_0420.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-4833\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-4833\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/IMG_0420-1024x768.jpg?resize=660%2C495\" alt=\"Lupe loved the snowy road on the N side of Crook Mountain.\" width=\"660\" height=\"495\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/IMG_0420.jpg?resize=1024%2C768&amp;ssl=1 1024w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/IMG_0420.jpg?resize=300%2C225&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/IMG_0420.jpg?resize=768%2C576&amp;ssl=1 768w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/IMG_0420.jpg?w=1651&amp;ssl=1 1651w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/IMG_0420.jpg?w=1320&amp;ssl=1 1320w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 660px) 100vw, 660px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-4833\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Lupe loved the snowy road on the N side of Crook Mountain.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>When Lupe was far enough around the N side of the mountain so that SPHP was starting to get glimpses of <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"http:\/\/peakbagger.com\/peak.aspx?pid=26346\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Crow Peak<\/a><\/strong><\/span> <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>(5,787 ft.)<\/strong><\/span>\u00a0off to the WNW, it was time to leave the road and start climbing the rest of the way up Crook Mountain.<\/p>\n<p>The climb wasn&#8217;t the hard part about getting to the top of Crook Mountain.\u00a0 The problem was more one of finding the true summit.\u00a0 The mountain is pretty broad and level on top for about 0.5 mile N\/S with a hook over to the E at the N end.\u00a0 It is also all forested, so it is hard to see very far.\u00a0 The topo map shows that there is a fairly large area contained within the 4,920 ft. contour toward the NW end.<\/p>\n<p>Lupe&#8217;s explorations on Crook Mountain agreed with the topo map.\u00a0 There was a pretty big area that was all about the same elevation toward the NW.\u00a0 This was the highest part of the mountain, but not by much.\u00a0 Lupe had her choice of little bumps and hillocks to declare the true summit.\u00a0 No one spot looked clearly higher than all the rest.\u00a0 With a flat, forested top, it wasn&#8217;t surprising there weren&#8217;t any views.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_4834\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4834\" style=\"width: 660px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/IMG_0421.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-4834\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-4834\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/IMG_0421-1024x768.jpg?resize=660%2C495\" alt=\"Lupe astride the receding glacier at the pinnacle of Crook Mountain. The Carolina Dog was looking pretty fine!<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>An unmarked dirt road went right over the highest part of Crook Mountain.\u00a0 A bit farther N, one end of it turned E, while the other end went S.\u00a0 Lupe and SPHP left the summit of\u00a0Crook Mountain heading S along the road.\u00a0 The road lost elevation gradually, and eventually came to a 4-way intersection.\u00a0 None of the roads were marked, but Lupe&#8217;s next peakbagging goal was to the WSW, so Lupe and SPHP turned W.<\/p>\n<p>As Lupe got toward the W side of Crook Mountain, there started to be bits of distant views toward the S and SW.\u00a0 Although the forest wasn&#8217;t as dense as it had been at the summit, there still weren&#8217;t any\u00a0nice open views.\u00a0 Before Lupe lost too much elevation, SPHP\u00a0wanted to\u00a0get at least some kind of a\u00a0look off\u00a0to the W, hoping it would be\u00a0possible to spot Whitewood Peak.\u00a0 At a small clearing, SPHP saw a mountain ahead that might be it.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_4836\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4836\" style=\"width: 660px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-4836\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/IMG_0428-e1600804521665-768x1024.jpg?resize=660%2C880\" alt=\"\" width=\"660\" height=\"880\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/IMG_0428-e1600804521665.jpg?resize=768%2C1024&amp;ssl=1 768w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/IMG_0428-e1600804521665.jpg?resize=225%2C300&amp;ssl=1 225w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/IMG_0428-e1600804521665.jpg?resize=1152%2C1536&amp;ssl=1 1152w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/IMG_0428-e1600804521665.jpg?resize=1536%2C2048&amp;ssl=1 1536w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/IMG_0428-e1600804521665.jpg?w=1650&amp;ssl=1 1650w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/IMG_0428-e1600804521665.jpg?w=1320&amp;ssl=1 1320w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 660px) 100vw, 660px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-4836\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Was that forested peak toward the L Whitewood Peak? SPHP wasn&#8217;t certain, but it seemed to be the most likely candidate from what little Lupe could see from Crook Mountain.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Lupe and SPHP continued SW, sometimes on roads and sometimes off them.\u00a0 Lupe lost quite a lot of elevation before coming to a fork in a road, where the branch going NW was marked No. 542.1F.\u00a0 She took the other branch, which went SW.\u00a0 Lupe had hardly left the fork behind, when she came to a nifty little rock outcropping suitable for an American Dingo display.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_4837\" it went around the SW side of a big\u00a0field.\u00a0 Going N was a problem.\u00a0 The farther Lupe went N, the more elevation she would have to lose to cross Sandy Creek in the valley just to the W.\u00a0 Lupe and SPHP doubled back a little before leaving the road to go down\u00a0a steep slope to the bottom of the valley.<\/p>\n<p>Sandy Creek wasn&#8217;t very big, but there was flow in it.\u00a0 Lupe was quite happy to come across Sandy Creek.\u00a0 It was the only stream she came to all day.\u00a0 She hopped in for a drink and cooled off in a deep little Dingo-sized started going W up the other side of the valley.\u00a0 Lupe came to a couple of roads.\u00a0 She followed them for only short distances, before leaving them to climb even higher directly up the slope.\u00a0 She eventually got high enough to reach a road that SPHP suspected was USFS Road No. 699.\u00a0 Lupe and SPHP followed\u00a0No. 699\u00a0for quite a long way.<\/p>\n<p>Eventually, Lupe came to a fork in No. 699, too.\u00a0 One branch went SW (L) and was marked No. 699.1D.\u00a0 The other branch was unmarked.\u00a0 It circled around a thinly forested knob a few acres in size.\u00a0 Since there weren&#8217;t many trees on the knob, it was possible to get a halfway decent look around.\u00a0 Lupe was now much closer to the mountain that SPHP thought was probably Whitewood Photo looks N.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The view from the end of No. 699.1D made SPHP again\u00a0suspect that the original Whitewood Peak candidate was the real one.\u00a0 It was still hard to tell for certain, though.\u00a0 Lupe had to go down into a sizable ravine before climbing up the new Whitewood Peak candidate.\u00a0 There was a dangerous downed barbed wire fence just to the S.\u00a0 SPHP also saw homes nearby in the forest, and signs indicating that Lupe was just N of private property.<\/p>\n<p>Lupe went directly W staying on USFS land.\u00a0 She lost elevation going down into the ravine, and then had to start climbing.\u00a0 On the other side of the ravine she found a narrow ATV trail that went very steeply up the mountain, staying\u00a0just N of the dangerous barbed wire fence line.\u00a0 SPHP had to keep stopping to pant for more oxygen, but eventually made it to the top.<\/p>\n<p>Nope, this wasn&#8217;t Whitewood Peak.\u00a0 It was hard to get a clear view through the forest, but SPHP could see enough to know that the original Whitewood Peak candidate was definitely higher than where Lupe was now.\u00a0 After a few more minutes spent studying the topo maps, things were starting to make sense.\u00a0 Yeah, SPHP was virtually certain the original Whitewood Peak candidate was the real deal.<\/p>\n<p>Very conveniently, the narrow ATV trail continued on to the W.\u00a0 To stay on high ground, Lupe and SPHP needed to circle around in that direction before turning N and then NE.\u00a0 Lupe and SPHP\u00a0pressed onward.\u00a0 The\u00a0terrain was much more level along in here.\u00a0 It was really easy going, thanks to the presence of the\u00a0ATV trail.<\/p>\n<p>The ATV trail divided a few times, and then faded to the point where Lupe lost it for a short while.\u00a0 By then she wasn&#8217;t far from the mountain.\u00a0 Lupe entered a clearing on the ridge approaching the peak.\u00a0 There she found a marker right out in the open.\u00a0 It was a USGS benchmark!\u00a0 The benchmark said Whitewood Peak, and had an arrow stamped into it pointing directly toward the mountain.<\/p>\n<p>There was no doubt now!\u00a0 Lupe was about to climb Whitewood Peak.\u00a0 She was almost there!<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_4844\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4844\" style=\"width: 660px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/IMG_0437.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-4844\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-4844\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/IMG_0437-1024x768.jpg?resize=660%2C495\" alt=\"Whitewood Peak from the SSW. SPHP went back much the same way they had come up to Whitewood Peak, although now that SPHP had a better grasp of the road system, Lupe was able to stick to the roads almost all the time and avoid all Lupe did things a bit differently.\u00a0 She followed a road upstream, instead of just crossing the creek and heading directly for Crook Mountain.\u00a0 The creek didn&#8217;t go too much farther upstream before it was reduced to a trickle.\u00a0 There was a spot where there were a lot of Lupe Treasures down by the little stream.\u00a0 SPHP picked them all up.<\/p>\n<p>Oddly, SPHP found a completely intact Miller Lite Beer, in a 16 ounce can.\u00a0 Less than a week ago, SPHP had found a completely intact beer on Lupe&#8217;s way back from <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.peakbagger.com\/peak.aspx?pid=66600\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Eagle Mountain<\/span><\/a> <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">(5,254 ft.)<\/span><\/strong>, though that one had only been an 8 ounce can.\u00a0 Despite all the many hundreds of Lupe Treasures gathered over the past few years, those were the only two id=\"caption-attachment-4856\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The machete saw collected from the headwaters of Sandy Creek.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>For a while the road went E, but it eventually turned SE.\u00a0 That was the wrong direction.\u00a0 Before returning to the G6, Lupe was going to climb Crook Mountain for a second time, just for fun.\u00a0 Lupe and SPHP took an old overgrown trail E and then turned NE.\u00a0 There didn&#8217;t seem to be any roads going N up Crook Mountain.<\/p>\n<p>It seemed like a much longer, tougher climb than the first time, but Lupe eventually made it back to the summit of Crook Mountain.\u00a0 The sun was only minutes from setting, but there was still sunlight on some of the tree tops.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_4857\" Photo looks S.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Lupe&#8217;s explorations still weren&#8217;t quite done.\u00a0 She followed the road at the top of Crook Mountain N.\u00a0 It quickly\u00a0turned E, and eventually went very steeply down the E side of the mountain.\u00a0 It became more of a jeep trail than a road &#8211;
