Alaska!<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>8-31-22, 9:33 AM, Dalton Highway MP 275, Galbraith Lake campground<\/em> &#8211;<\/p>\n<p><em>Good morning, and about time, SPHP!\u00a0 How are your paws?<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Still sore, but better.\u00a0 Thanks for asking, Loop.\u00a0 Going to be a day or two before I climb any more mountains, though.\u00a0 And how are you?<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Ready to do some sniffing, if you&#8217;ll let me out of the RAV4, SPHP.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>I will.\u00a0 Won&#8217;t be joining you, though.\u00a0 This should be a good day to catch up the trip journal while I&#8217;m incapacitated.\u00a0 Have fun out there!<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The Carolina Dog bounded out of the RAV4 as soon as SPHP opened the door.\u00a0 Apparently, her paws were just fine.<\/p>\n<p>Yesterday&#8217;s brief Dingo Summer was gone.\u00a0 Completely overcast.\u00a0 Not a speck of blue sky!\u00a0 The clouds were high enough so that the summits of nearby peaks were in sight, but bigger peaks farther S along the spine of the Brooks Range were hidden.<\/p>\n<p>After yesterday&#8217;s relative calm, the S wind was back at it again.\u00a0 Yellow leaves were flying off the tall bushes surrounding the campsite.\u00a0 Last day of August, and the bushes were already looking rather bare.\u00a0 Here on the N side of the Brooks Range, winter was plotting its return sometime in the not too distant future.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_47255\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-47255\" style=\"width: 1651px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a id=\"caption-attachment-47255\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Last day of August at the <strong>Galbraith Lake campground<\/strong>.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>SPHP worked fairly diligently on the trip journal, but also eventually did manage to hobble along with Lupe on occasional short strolls.<\/p>\n<p><em>This region near Galbraith Lake is a nice dry spot when the wind is out of the S like this, SPHP!\u00a0 If we stay here again tonight, maybe we can climb <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/peakbagger.com\/peak.aspx?pid=-62967\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Lake Benchmark Mountain<\/span><\/a> <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">(5,000 ft.)<\/span><\/strong> tomorrow?<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>I&#8217;d really like to, Loopster, but conditions are pretty gloomy.\u00a0 If I knew for sure it would be sunny tomorrow, I&#8217;d be in favor of staying.\u00a0 However, I&#8217;d also like to see if the weather is better S of Atigun Pass.\u00a0 Haven&#8217;t forgotten about <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/peakbagger.com\/peak.aspx?pid=26208\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Poss Mountain<\/span><\/a> <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">(6,180 ft.)<\/span><\/strong>.\u00a0 Would sure like to get another shot it.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>As dark as those clouds are to the S, it&#8217;s still going to be rainy down there, SPHP.\u00a0 What will we do, if it is?<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Love the Brooks Range, but Alaska is a big place.\u00a0 Lots of other beautiful parts of Alaska that I&#8217;m hoping we can visit on this Dingo Vacation, Loop.\u00a0 We&#8217;ll find something wonderful to do!<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Mid-afternoon, SPHP joined Lupe on a last great romp around the entire Galbraith Lake campground.\u00a0 During gusts of the S wind, yellow leaves continued to fly as the American Dingo enjoyed her last outing on the N side of the Brooks Range.<\/p>\n<p>Sad to even think about leaving!\u00a0 If the sky had started to clear up at all by now, Lake Benchmark Mountain would be on the agenda tomorrow, but conditions remained as overcast and gray as they had been earlier.<\/p>\n<p><em>8-31-22, 3:38 PM, 55\u00baF, Dalton Highway MP 276<\/em> &#8211; After driving 2 miles N up the first big hill, SPHP turned around, then started back down before parking the RAV4 right along the highway.<\/p>\n<p><em>Last chance for a good look at Galbraith Lake, Looper, but let&#8217;s be quick!\u00a0 Don&#8217;t want to be sitting here when the next big truck comes Sisterhood stood by the sign at the start of the Dalton Highway, two full weeks of glorious adventures along this road to the true Arctic now in the rear view mirror.<\/p>\n<figure River.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>In that case, you should have brought me 6 from the buffet, SPHP!\u00a0 Surely, the start of the Dalton Highway is worthy of a bacon strip!<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Absolutely, Loop!\u00a0 Next time, I&#8217;ll have to be more careful with the count.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>A lot of good that does me now, SPHP!<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Life has its little disappointments, Loopster.\u00a0 Let&#8217;s just be grateful for all the marvelous adventures we&#8217;ve had.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Oh, I am, SPHP!\u00a0 We had some grand times along the Dalton Highway.\u00a0 Hope it won&#8217;t be so long next time before we return!<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>9-1-22, 5:50 PM, 57\u00baF, Fairbanks<\/em> &#8211; The pavement was actually dry along much of the Elliot Highway, but by the time Lupe reached Fairbanks the sky was spitting rain again.\u00a0 SPHP spent a couple of hours getting free potable water at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fnsb.gov\/462\/Pioneer-Park\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>Pioneer Park<\/strong><\/span><\/a>, buying supplies, and fueling up the RAV4 at the now super cheap by comparison price of a mere $4.49 per gallon.<\/p>\n<p><em>This roasted lemon pepper chicken was a great idea, SPHP!\u00a0 Delicious!<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Yup, we&#8217;ve done a number on it, too, Loop.\u00a0 Not much left.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>So, what now, SPHP?<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Depends.\u00a0 Let me check the weather forecast on our fancy schmancy new iPhone.\u00a0 Hmm.\u00a0 Not that great.\u00a0 Sunny tomorrow, but rainy after that.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Any mountains we can climb around here in a day, SPHP?<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Oh, I think we&#8217;ve got a good option on your list of possibilities, Loop.\u00a0 Been on your list for years.\u00a0 Maybe it&#8217;s about time we checked it out?<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Onward then, SPHP!<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>9-1-22, 8:00 PM, Fairbanks<\/em> &#8211; The sky was merely overcast when Lupe left Fairbanks heading N again.\u00a0 At Fox, SPHP took the Steese Highway.\u00a0 Rain showers returned as the light began to fade.<\/p>\n<p><em>9-1-22, 8:53 PM, <\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/dnr.alaska.gov\/parks\/aspunits\/northern\/upchatrvsrs.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong><em>Upper Chatanika River State Recreation Site<\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/a> &#8211; A sniff along the Chatanika River proved to be Lupe&#8217;s last chance to stretch near the end of a day spent mostly in the RAV4.\u00a0 She didn&#8217;t go
