(8-17-22)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>Days 19, 20, and Part 1 of Day 21 of Lupe&#8217;s 2nd Summer of 2022 Dingo Vacation to Canada &amp; Alaska!<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>8-17-22, 7:19 AM, 55\u00baF, grassy bluff overlooking Kusawa Lake<\/em> &#8211; Rained all night, and was still raining as Loopster got underway again.\u00a0 The 20 km gravel road back to the Alaska Highway was a sea of mud, the poor RAV4 a filthy mess by the time SPHP turned W onto the pavement.\u00a0 When the American Dingo reached Haines Junction, though, the RAV4 was looking shiny and new again, except for the rear end, which the rain hadn&#8217;t been able to wash off.<\/p>\n<p><em>How far are we going today, SPHP?<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Dunno, Loop.\u00a0 Depends on how long this rain continues.\u00a0 All the way to Alaska, easy, if it keeps up like this.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Alaska!\u00a0 Today?\u00a0 Are we really that close to Alaska, SPHP?<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Yup!\u00a0 Remember when we climbed <a href=\"http:\/\/adventuresoflupe.com\/?p=13157\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">AB Mountain<\/span><\/strong><\/a> near Skagway, and you became the Most High Exalted Dingo of the Arctic Sisterhood, Loop?\u00a0 We already passed the turn to Skagway before we even got to Whitehorse<\/em><em>.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>We skipped Skagway?\u00a0 Why?\u00a0 What part of Alaska are we going to, SPHP?<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>As far N as we can, Looper!<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>The Brooks Range, SPHP?<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>And beyond!\u00a0 Deadhorse, sweet puppy!\u00a0 I want to see the North Slope.\u00a0 The Most High Exalted Dingo of the Arctic Sisterhood is returning to the true Arctic!\u00a0 Of course, we won&#8217;t get that far in a day, but what&#8217;s the rush?\u00a0 W<\/em><em>e&#8217;ll be traveling through some fabulous territory.\u00a0 If things dry out, we&#8217;ll be making stops at some great spots you&#8217;ll recognize along the way.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>N of Haines Junction, it was only 48\u00baF as SPHP drove past <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/adventuresoflupe.com\/?p=7053\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Decoeli<\/span><\/a><\/strong>.\u00a0 Lost in rain and fog, there was no recognizing that fabulous peak.<\/p>\n<p><em>8-17-22, 10:02 AM &#8211; <\/em>Only a short time later, the pavement was dry as SPHP made the turn off the highway onto the big pullout at the S end of Kluane Lake.\u00a0 Clouds hung gloomily over <a href=\"http:\/\/adventuresoflupe.com\/?p=13549\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>Sheep Mountain<\/strong><\/span><\/a>, but at least it wasn&#8217;t raining.\u00a0 A SW wind kicked up dust over in the Slims River valley.\u00a0 A lot of memories here as Lupe took a stroll along the lakeshore.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_45433\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-45433\" style=\"width: 2560px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/IMG_5964-scaled.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-45433\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/IMG_5964-scaled.jpg?resize=660%2C495\" alt=\"\" width=\"660\" height=\"495\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/IMG_5964-scaled.jpg?w=1651&amp;ssl=1 1651w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/IMG_5964-scaled.jpg?resize=300%2C225&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/IMG_5964-scaled.jpg?resize=1024%2C768&amp;ssl=1 1024w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/IMG_5964-scaled.jpg?resize=768%2C576&amp;ssl=1 768w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/IMG_5964-scaled.jpg?resize=1536%2C1152&amp;ssl=1 1536w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 660px) 100vw, 660px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-45433\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><strong>Kluane Lake<\/strong>. <strong>Sheep Mountain<\/strong> (L). face, Loop!<\/em><\/p>\n<p>92 miles to Tok!\u00a0 A peaceful evening drive through a region of low hills ensued.\u00a0 Tall, thin, Dr. Suess-like trees of the boreal forest extended far and away on both sides of the Alaska Highway.<\/p>\n<p><em>8-17-22, 8:00 PM<\/em> &#8211; Missed it!\u00a0 Turning around, SPHP drove back to a big, paved pullout less than 25 miles from Tok.\u00a0 Not a soul here other than an annoying number of mosquitoes.\u00a0 Not much of a view, either, but this would do for the night.<\/p>\n<p><em>8-18-22, 7:12 AM, 58\u00baF<\/em> &#8211; Clear and sunny in Tok!\u00a0 Compared to what it had been in Canada, cheap gas, too.\u00a0 At a mere $4.769 per gallon, SPHP filled the RAV4 completely.<\/p>\n<p>Lupe had only been on the last stretch of the Alaska Highway from Tok to Delta Junction once before, and SPHP had little recollection of it.\u00a0 This was not mountainous territory, most of the drive merely hilly to pancake flat.\u00a0 Highlights included bridges over 3 rivers, the Robertson, Johnson, and Gerstle.\u00a0 Large, braided streams, they were somewhat reminiscent of the Donjek and White.<\/p>\n<p><em>8-18-22, 9:53 AM<\/em> &#8211; N of Delta Junction, SPHP stopped at a pullout along the Tanana River.\u00a0 Time to get out, have a look, and sniff the air for a few minutes.\u00a0 No sooner had Lupe ventured over to the river&#8217;s edge than a couple of boys came running over.\u00a0 They asked a million questions about Lupe, wanted to pet her, and were anxious to show SPHP a couple of sticks they had been whittling first time in 5 years before noon.\u00a0 Last chance to to resupply and fuel up with cheap gas!\u00a0 Free potable water at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fnsb.gov\/462\/Pioneer-Park\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>Pioneer Park<\/strong><\/span><\/a>, too.\u00a0 Once those tasks were taken care of, the Carolina Dog was free to move on.\u00a0 Everything was town.\u00a0 It&#8217;s completely flipped from the last forecast the iPhone gave me back in Whitehorse 3 days ago.\u00a0 Coldfoot was supposed to be sunny and clear for a whole week.\u00a0 Now that we&#8217;ve come all this way, it&#8217;s saying 90% chance of rain today, 70% tomorrow, and cloudy for days after that.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Well, what are our options, SPHP?<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>We could delay our jaunt N by a couple of days, Loop.\u00a0 The forecast looks a little better down here.\u00a0 <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/peakbagger.com\/peak.aspx?pid=26314\" target=\"_blank\" drive to Livengood was beautiful!\u00a0 Elliot Highway No. 2 wound up and down heavily forested ridges separated by deep valleys.\u00a0 Not much traffic, except some big trucks.\u00a0 Knew where those were coming from!<\/p>\n<p><em>8-18-22, 5:21 PM<\/em> &#8211; Blinking in the late afternoon sunshine, Lupe stood in front of a sign she hadn&#8217;t seen in nearly 5 years.\u00a0 Must have rained not href=\"https:\/\/www.blm.gov\/sites\/default\/files\/docs\/2022-04\/AK-Dalton_Highway_Visitor_Guide_2022.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>Dalton Highway<\/strong><\/span><\/a> was damp and muddy in spots, too.\u00a0 The rear end of the RAV4 was soon on its way back to being a filthy mess, but that was to be expected sooner or later on the Dalton even in the best of times.\u00a0 The drive was awesome!\u00a0 Occasional sprinkles from silver-lined clouds, the pale blue sky of the far N over dark green forests, and from some of the highest ridges, views of distant hills and mountains of the trackless wilderness.<\/p>\n<p>After not having been here for so many years, it was like returning to a world once glimpsed in a long forgotten
