Robson at 12,972 feet is the highest peak in the Canadian Rockies (though not in all of Canada).\u00a0\u00a0Gorgeous Berg Lake lies at the base of the N face of Mt. Robson at the end of a 21 km trail which passes through the Valley of\u00a0a Thousand\u00a0Falls.\u00a0 Although there is a campground at Berg Lake, dogs are not allowed to stay overnight.\u00a0 So Lupe made the entire 42 km round trip as a long day hike.\u00a0 Many other trails are located in the Berg Lake area which would be fun to explore.\u00a0 At 53.11 \u00b0N, Berg Lake is as far N as Lupe has ever been.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>The Berg Lake trailhead is located on the Robson River\u00a0at the end of a\u00a03 km gravel road\u00a0N of the Mt. Robson Provincial Park Visitor Center in British Columbia, Canada.\u00a0 The visitor center is about 55 miles W of the town of Jasper, Alberta along the Yellowhead Highway No. 16.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>This was a patchy cloudy and foggy morning in Jasper.\u00a0 SPHP checked the weather\u00a0forecast at the visitor center shortly after it opened, and was pleasantly surprised to learn the forecast was for sunny skies and 22 \u00b0C (72 \u00b0F).\u00a0\u00a0 With this encouragement, Lupe and\u00a0SPHP headed W\u00a0on the Yellowhead Highway to\u00a0Mt. Robson Provincial Park.\u00a0 Sure enough, shortly\u00a0after leaving\u00a0Jasper the skies cleared and the fog was left behind.\u00a0 It was a perfect day &#8211; cool, comfortable and clear.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_438\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-438\" style=\"width: 660px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/P1050229.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-438\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/P1050229-1024x768.jpg?resize=660%2C495\" alt=\"Mt. Robson and the Mt. Robson Provincial Park Visitor Center<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>SPHP stopped in at the Mount Robson Provincial Park visitor center\u00a0to register and get a free map of the Berg Lake trail.\u00a0 From there it was a short drive to the Berg Lake trailhead.\u00a0 There were lots of people and vehicles around, but SPHP found a place to\u00a0park the G6.\u00a0 Sometime between 10:30\u00a0and 11:00 AM, Lupe crossed the bridge over the beautiful rushing\u00a0Robson River and set off along the Berg Lake trail through a shady cedar forest.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_441\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-441\" style=\"width: 660px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/P1050232.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-441\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/P1050232-768x1024.jpg?resize=660%2C880\" alt=\"The Robson River near the Berg Lake Trailhead.\" width=\"660\" height=\"880\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/P1050232.jpg?resize=768%2C1024&amp;ssl=1 768w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/P1050232.jpg?resize=225%2C300&amp;ssl=1 225w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/P1050232.jpg?w=1650&amp;ssl=1 1650w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/P1050232.jpg?w=1320&amp;ssl=1 1320w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 660px) 100vw, 660px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-441\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The Robson River near the Berg Lake trailhead.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>It was an easy stroll following the river, since the elevation gain was gradual. Before too long\u00a0Lupe and SPHP\u00a0fell in with another hiker, a young man from Calgary named Jason.\u00a0 Jason had saved up money and then gone on a 5 month trip by himself to South America from the prior December to May.\u00a0 He had visited Argentina, Chile, Bolivia, and the Amazon rain forest (although not Brazil).\u00a0 Sometime during this trip he had taken time to fly to Fiji to see his parents, who were also traveling.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_442\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-442\" style=\"width: 660px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a id=\"caption-attachment-442\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The cedar forest along the Berg Lake trail.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Jason\u00a0intended to hike just the first 5 or 6 km of the Berg Lake trail as far as Kinney Lake (the first major trail objective), since he was actually on his way to Vancouver.\u00a0 SPHP found Jason&#8217;s tales about his travels very interesting.\u00a0 Lupe trotted along keeping a sharp watch for squirrels while Jason and SPHP chatted.\u00a0 It seemed like Kinney Lake was reached in no time at all.\u00a0 Jason turned back and Lupe and SPHP continued on following the trail, which\u00a0now went up and down\u00a0in the forest\u00a0above the\u00a0E shore of Kinney Lake.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_443\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-443\" of\u00a0A Thousand Falls.\u00a0 It was all very beautiful.\u00a0\u00a0SPHP enjoyed seeing Lupe crossing\u00a0a\u00a0fun swinging bridge over the Robson River.\u00a0 The trail started rising steeply once\u00a0Lupe got to the area of the three main waterfalls a few km above Kinney Lake.\u00a0\u00a0Lupe came first to White Falls, then Falls of the Pool, and finally Emperor Falls.<\/p>\n<figure up\u00a0started seeming\u00a0long and hard.\u00a0 The trail\u00a0was steep, it was rather warm out, and swarms of biting flies descended upon Lupe and SPHP at every stop for a breather.\u00a0 SPHP swatted hundreds of\u00a0flies dead, but it was no use &#8211; their numbers were endless.\u00a0 The only real defense was to press steadily along.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_450\" id=\"caption-attachment-470\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Lupe at Emperor Falls<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The trail continued to climb after\u00a0Lupe passed\u00a0Emperor Falls, but not quite as steeply.\u00a0 Eventually it leveled out a great deal, and the climb was much more gradual making the\u00a0trek\u00a0far more enjoyable again.\u00a0 Lupe\u00a0came to a wide valley with various streams of the braided Robson River meandering through it sparkling in the sun.\u00a0 A bit farther along, Lupe came to\u00a0a barren rocky landscape which was mostly dry.\u00a0 By then\u00a0there was\u00a0a good view of Mt. Berg Glacier is now in view.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Just past the dry rocky area\u00a0Lupe crested a small ridge and\u00a0finally saw Berg Lake ahead.\u00a0 The trail went into a stunted forest and continued N\u00a0above the W shore of the lake.\u00a0\u00a0At the far N end of Berg Lake, Lupe\u00a0and SPHP reached the campground 21 km from the trailhead where\u00a0Lupe had\u00a0started.\u00a0\u00a0Lupe and SPHP left the trail and went down to join others on the rocky N beach of Berg Lake.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_455\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-455\" style=\"width: 660px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/P1050248.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-455\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/P1050248-768x1024.jpg?resize=660%2C880\" alt=\"Lupe on the N beach of Berg Lake. Robson goes right down into Berg Lake.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The view of <strong><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"http:\/\/peakbagger.com\/peak.aspx?pid=4368\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Mt. Robson<\/a><\/span> <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">(12,972 ft.)<\/span><\/strong>\u00a0towering over Berg Lake\u00a0was stupendous.\u00a0 Lupe and SPHP\u00a0had a clear view of\u00a0the Berg and Mist glaciers.\u00a0 Little icebergs that had calved off into Berg Lake from the Berg Glacier were floating in a line heading NW across the lake towards Lupe, driven\u00a0by a breeze coming from the mountain.\u00a0 Lupe posed for some\u00a0photos with Berg Lake, the glaciers and Mt. Robson &#8211; the Robson glacier, which fills a valley and looks like\u00a0the typical image of a\u00a0long flowing river of ice the word glacier conjures up.\u00a0 What really would have been great was to spend the evening admiring Mt. Robson,\u00a0camp out at the campground overnight, and spend the next day exploring the area.\u00a0\u00a0The map showed\u00a0lots of interesting trails around.<\/p>\n<p>However,\u00a0the reality was that dogs aren&#8217;t allowed to camp there overnight.\u00a0 Pre-registration is required even for the humans.\u00a0\u00a0Lupe and SPHP could not stay.\u00a0 It was already late afternoon and\u00a0another 21 km trek had to be made back out to the G6 to end the day.\u00a0 Lupe and SPHP lingered on the N beach of Berg Lake admiring Mt. Robson for quite a while.\u00a0 This was the farthest N (53.11\u00b0) Lupe had ever been and it was gorgeous!\u00a0 Inevitably though,\u00a0the time came to leave.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_465\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-465\" style=\"width: 660px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/P1050259.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-465\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/P1050259-768x1024.jpg?resize=660%2C880\" alt=\"Mt. Robson, Berg Lake &amp; the Mist Glacier.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Reluctantly, Lupe and\u00a0SPHP set off on the 21 km journey back to the G6.\u00a0 The return hike was long, but very enjoyable.\u00a0\u00a0Since it was getting late in the day, there were fewer and fewer people on the trails.\u00a0 The scenery was even more beautiful in the evening light as the shadows of the mountains grew.\u00a0 It certainly didn&#8217;t hurt that the way back was downhill either, for SPHP was feeling the effects of the long day.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_466\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-466\" style=\"width: 660px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/P1050260.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-466\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/P1050260-768x1024.jpg?resize=660%2C880\" alt=\"Heading back. Whitehorn Mountain and the braided stream of the Robson River above Emperor Falls.\" width=\"660\" height=\"880\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/P1050260.jpg?resize=768%2C1024&amp;ssl=1 768w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/P1050260.jpg?resize=225%2C300&amp;ssl=1 225w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/P1050260.jpg?w=1650&amp;ssl=1 1650w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/P1050260.jpg?w=1320&amp;ssl=1 1320w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 660px) 100vw, 660px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-466\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Heading back. <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"http:\/\/peakbagger.com\/peak.aspx?pid=4366\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Whitehorn Mountain<\/a><\/strong><\/span> <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>(11,152 ft.)<\/strong><\/span> and the braided stream of the Robson River above Emperor Falls.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>It was 11:18 PM and 59 \u00b0F when\u00a0Lupe finally got back to the G6.\u00a0 Even at that late hour, that far N there\u00a0was still a faint twilight in the sky, but it\u00a0had been\u00a0pretty dark out in the cedar\u00a0forest.\u00a0\u00a0Lupe and SPHP\u00a0had hardly eaten anything all day, so\u00a0SPHP fixed up Lupe&#8217;s bed in the G6, let her leap in for a well deserved rest and gave her some Alpo.\u00a0 She was pretty famished and devoured 3\/4 of a can before she was full and ready to snooze.\u00a0 SPHP\u00a0had a Zone bar to\u00a0get the\u00a0blood sugar up.\u00a0 Then\u00a0Lupe and SPHP\u00a0went to sleep right there in the G6 at the Mt. Robson trailhead.<\/p>\n<p>The glorious 42 km round trip trek to see Berg Lake and Mt. Robson was the final really long day hike of Lupe&#8217;s 2013 Dingo Vacation to the Beartooths and the Canadian Rockies.\u00a0 At daybreak the next morning, SPHP started the G6 up and began the long drive S back home to the States.\u00a0 It&#8217;s always a bit sad when it&#8217;s time to turn around,\u00a0although there were still a few other stops and shorter hikes to come before Lupe left Canada.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_440\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-440\" style=\"width: 660px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/P1050231.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-440\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/P1050231-1024x768.jpg?resize=660%2C495\" alt=\"Mt.
