was that on the phone, SPHP?\u00a0 The fanatic again?<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Yup!\u00a0 He&#8217;s run into 3 feet of snow on the road to <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/peakbagger.com\/peak.aspx?pid=6228\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Crooks Tower<\/span><\/a> <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">(7,137 ft.)<\/span><\/strong>, so he&#8217;s got a much longer hike ahead of him than expected.\u00a0 Going to be running late.\u00a0 Won&#8217;t arrive here until sometime this evening now.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The &#8220;fanatic&#8221; was <a href=\"https:\/\/peakbagger.com\/climber\/climber.aspx?cid=4027\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>Dennis Stewart<\/strong><\/span><\/a>, aka &#8220;Stewy&#8221;.\u00a0 Neither Lupe nor SPHP knew Dennis, but that was about to change.\u00a0 He was a man on a mission, many missions, actually.\u00a0 Dennis&#8217; purpose on this particular trip was to climb the 10 highest named peaks, plus the 10 highest named county high points, of both South Dakota and Nebraska.<\/p>\n<p>Fanatic wasn&#8217;t an unfair label.\u00a0 Dennis owned the tallest indoor climbing wall in the Midwest &#8211; 32 feet high, more than 500 square feet of surface area, with an 11 foot overhang &#8211; a feature incorporated into his private home!\u00a0 At the tender age of 73, Dennis was still working on so many peakbagging lists that he knew there was no way he would ever come close to completing many of them.<\/p>\n<p><em>No doubt about it, Loop.\u00a0 Dennis is our kind of fanatic!<\/em><\/p>\n<p>After reaching the Black Hills region earlier today, Dennis had already been to both <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/peakbagger.com\/peak.aspx?pid=6224\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Terry Peak<\/span><\/a> <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">(7,064 ft.)<\/span><\/strong> and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/peakbagger.com\/peak.aspx?pid=19809\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">White Tail Peak<\/span><\/a> <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">(6,962 ft.)<\/span><\/strong>.\u00a0 Tomorrow, Lupe and SPHP were going to join him on his quest.<\/p>\n<p>At least, that was the plan.\u00a0 Dennis was not only a prolific peakbagger, but a runner, too.\u00a0 At one point in his life, Dennis had helped set a world record in the 2 mile relay as a member of the University of Kansas track team.\u00a0 In 2019, Dennis had won the 800 meter in the Huntsman World Championship in his age category.<\/p>\n<p>Worrisome, actually.<\/p>\n<p><em>If Dennis takes off running up all the mountains tomorrow, feel free to run right along with him, Loopster.\u00a0 You know me.\u00a0 Not even going to try to keep up.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>5-4-22, 9:24 AM, Flag Mountain<\/em> &#8211; Dennis had reassuringly promised not to run up any mountains, although it would have been fine if he did.\u00a0 SPHP had no intention of slowing him down.\u00a0 <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/peakbagger.com\/peak.aspx?pid=6230\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Flag Mountain<\/span><\/a> <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">(6,937 ft.)<\/span><\/strong> wasn&#8217;t going to be a problem in any case.\u00a0 A simple drive up.\u00a0 After SPHP parked the RAV4 at the end of USFS Road No. 416, a set of stone steps was all that had to be managed to reach what was left of the old fire lookout tower up top.<\/p>\n<p>The only real issue was the weather.\u00a0 Although Flag Mountain normally offered sweeping views of a huge swath of territory E of the edge of the limestone plateau country, Lupe wasn&#8217;t going to get to show off her Black Hills to Dennis here today.\u00a0 Foggy and snowing!<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_40942\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-40942\" style=\"width: half a dozen prior occasions.\u00a0 SPHP kind of thought that she actually had seen the benchmark somewhere up here before, but couldn&#8217;t find it, either.<\/p>\n<p>Stewy had a routine he went through at each mountain he visited.\u00a0 It was interesting to see how he operated.\u00a0 Verbal notes, some of which were based on his phone&#8217;s GPS, were taken by speaking into a portable recorder.\u00a0 Date, time, distance traveled, elevation gain, exact location and elevation, weather and route conditions, what views were present, and anything else Dennis felt might be of interest were all mentioned.\u00a0 This data would eventually serve as the basis of written records and a trip report which he would post online.<\/p>\n<p>Since he usually traveled alone, Dennis also had a there wasn&#8217;t much reason to linger.\u00a0 As snowflakes continued to fall, everyone headed back down to the RAV4.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_40949\"
