{"id":4068,"date":"2016-01-27T08:10:34","date_gmt":"2016-01-27T15:10:34","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/adventuresoflupe.com\/?p=4068"},"modified":"2020-09-22T10:59:59","modified_gmt":"2020-09-22T16:59:59","slug":"black-hills-sd-expedition-no-153-steamboat-rock-puggs-keep-green-top-1-23-16","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/adventuresoflupe.com\/?p=4068","title":{"rendered":"Black Hills, SD Expedition No. 153 &#8211; Steamboat Rock, Pugg&#8217;s Keep &#038; Green Top (1-23-16)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>9:42 AM (44\u00b0F), a beautiful and warm (for January) sunny day, and\u00a0Lupe was back!\u00a0 She had been here once before,\u00a0almost 3 years\u00a0ago.\u00a0 Way back on February 9, 2013, near the end of Black Hills, SD Expedition No. 46, Lupe had tried to climb <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.peakbagger.com\/peak.aspx?pid=67184\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Steamboat Rock<\/span><\/a> <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">(5,081 ft.)<\/span><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Back then, Lupe hadn&#8217;t succeeded in finding a way up to the summit, but she&#8217;d gotten close.\u00a0 She&#8217;d approached from the N, and encountered cliffs\u00a0just below the mountaintop.\u00a0 The cliffs weren&#8217;t high, only 10-15 feet tall at that end of the mountain, but the sun was about to set.\u00a0 There hadn&#8217;t been time to\u00a0really look around\u00a0for a safe way up.<\/p>\n<p>Things were different now.\u00a0 It was early in the day.\u00a0 Lupe had time to search the entire circumference of the mountain, if necessary, to find a route up.<\/p>\n<p>Lupe and SPHP set\u00a0out from the Steamboat Rock picnic ground along Nemo Road.\u00a0 Boxelder Creek\u00a0flows between the picnic ground and Steamboat Rock to the N.\u00a0 To get across the creek, Lupe followed Nemo Road E to USFS Road No. 147, where there was a bridge.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_4070\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4070\" style=\"width: 660px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/IMG_0109-e1554838045796.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-4070\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/IMG_0109-e1554838045796-768x1024.jpg?resize=660%2C880\" alt=\"\" width=\"660\" height=\"880\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/IMG_0109-e1554838045796.jpg?resize=768%2C1024&amp;ssl=1 768w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/IMG_0109-e1554838045796.jpg?resize=225%2C300&amp;ssl=1 225w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/IMG_0109-e1554838045796.jpg?w=1650&amp;ssl=1 1650w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/IMG_0109-e1554838045796.jpg?w=1320&amp;ssl=1 1320w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 660px) 100vw, 660px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-4070\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Lupe arrives at the Steamboat Rock picnic ground. Photo looks N at Steamboat Rock.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Once across Boxelder Creek, Lupe left USFS Road No. 147\u00a0by climbing up\u00a0an embankment.\u00a0 She then traveled NW toward Steamboat Rock.\u00a0 Part of the time she was in the forest, and part of the time out on open ground just S of a big fenced field of privately owned land.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_4071\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4071\" style=\"width: 660px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/IMG_0110.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-4071\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-4071\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/IMG_0110-1024x768.jpg?resize=660%2C495\" alt=\"After crossing Box Elder Creek on USFS Road No. 147, Lupe headed NW toward Steamboat Rock.\" width=\"660\" height=\"495\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/IMG_0110.jpg?resize=1024%2C768&amp;ssl=1 1024w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/IMG_0110.jpg?resize=300%2C225&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/IMG_0110.jpg?resize=768%2C576&amp;ssl=1 768w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/IMG_0110.jpg?w=1651&amp;ssl=1 1651w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/IMG_0110.jpg?w=1320&amp;ssl=1 1320w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 660px) 100vw, 660px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-4071\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">After crossing Box Elder Creek on USFS Road No. 147, Lupe headed NW toward Steamboat Rock.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Lupe had to re-enter the forest to get around the SW end of the field.\u00a0 She then turned N and started a gradual climb.\u00a0\u00a0Lupe and SPHP headed for the SE end of the E side of the mountain.\u00a0 The forest had suffered a fair amount of damage from mountain pine bark beetles, but it wasn&#8217;t too bad.\u00a0\u00a0Most\u00a0of the\u00a0time it\u00a0wasn&#8217;t hard to avoid the deadfall timber.<\/p>\n<p>Steamboat Rock contains\u00a0two bands of rock which are less easily eroded than the\u00a0geologic formations\u00a0between and below them, resulting in two bands of cliffs around the mountain.\u00a0 Lupe needed to find a route\u00a0up avoiding both.\u00a0 It was clear Lupe couldn&#8217;t just go up the S end of the mountain, where the\u00a0cliff walls\u00a0were high and unbroken.\u00a0\u00a0Lupe traveled N along the E side of Steamboat Rock, gaining elevation and looking for an opening.<\/p>\n<p>By the time Lupe had climbed high enough to reach the base of the first set of cliffs, she\u00a0was far enough N to see that\u00a0just\u00a0ahead was an area where the cliffs were reduced to an intermittent string of rock outcroppings.\u00a0 The ground between the rock outcroppings was steep, but easily climbable.\u00a0 Lupe and SPHP had no problem\u00a0getting up above the first band of rocks.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_4072\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4072\" style=\"width: 660px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/IMG_0111-e1554838194261.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-4072\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/IMG_0111-e1554838194261-768x1024.jpg?resize=660%2C880\" alt=\"\" width=\"660\" height=\"880\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/IMG_0111-e1554838194261.jpg?resize=768%2C1024&amp;ssl=1 768w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/IMG_0111-e1554838194261.jpg?resize=225%2C300&amp;ssl=1 225w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/IMG_0111-e1554838194261.jpg?w=1650&amp;ssl=1 1650w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/IMG_0111-e1554838194261.jpg?w=1320&amp;ssl=1 1320w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 660px) 100vw, 660px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-4072\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">At he base of the first set of cliffs. Photo looks NE.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>SPHP wasn&#8217;t really sure what Lupe would find up on Steamboat Rock.\u00a0 A glance to the W from where Lupe came up was very encouraging.\u00a0 An unbroken gentle slope rose slightly toward the W.\u00a0 The ground was almost flat.\u00a0 A pine forest covered the top of the mountain, with little sunlit clearings scattered here and there.\u00a0 Pine needles and patches of snow covered the forest floor.<\/p>\n<p>Lupe and SPHP headed W through the forest.\u00a0 A few minutes later, Lupe reached a strange structure crudely built out of\u00a0rough wood.\u00a0 It was about 30 feet long N\/S, and maybe 15 to 20 feet wide E\/W.\u00a0 A\u00a0gap in the 4 foot high\u00a0walls near the NW end of the enclosure served as the only entrance.\u00a0 There was no roof.\u00a0 A sign indicated\u00a0Lupe had\u00a0arrived at &#8220;Pugg&#8217;s Keep&#8221;.\u00a0 Trash, mostly empty beer cans and water bottles, was strewn\u00a0all over the place.<\/p>\n<p>Pugg&#8217;s Keep\u00a0was perched quite\u00a0close to\u00a0the cliffs along the W side of Steamboat Rock.\u00a0 Lupe\u00a0went to\u00a0check out the view.\u00a0 Not too surprisingly, Pugg&#8217;s Keep was pretty close to the best view from Steamboat Rock.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_4075\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4075\" style=\"width: 660px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/IMG_0114.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-4075\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-4075\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/IMG_0114-1024x768.jpg?resize=660%2C495\" alt=\"Lupe along the W rim of Steamboat Rock. Lupe claimed her peakbagging success nearly 3 years after her first unsuccessful attempt to climb the mountain.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Lupe\u00a0returned to\u00a0Pugg&#8217;s Keep for another sniff around.\u00a0 Inside the enclosure was a rather nicely constructed fireplace made of loosely assembled\u00a0limestone.\u00a0 On the W\u00a0side were a number of boards with writing on them, including the Pugg&#8217;s Keep sign.<\/p>\n<p>People had painted their names or nicknames on various pieces of wood near the Pugg&#8217;s Keep sign.\u00a0 Most of the dates weren&#8217;t from that long ago, just a few months back in the late summer or\u00a0fall of 2015.\u00a0 &#8220;Antman&#8221; on 8-30-15, Brit Holberry, Isaiah S. Shovel 9-7-15, Alex Lewis, Coletrain 9-5-15, McPat, Jim &amp; Susan &amp; Brit on 10-30-15, Caleb Stanley, and Beave S. Sheesh, people!<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>There were more fine furnishings at Pugg&#8217;s Keep, too.\u00a0 An old portable grill just starting to rust was\u00a0nestled in\u00a0the W wall.\u00a0 A couple of short ropes hung from a tree.\u00a0 An assortment of pens was bungee corded to a tree.\u00a0 Nearby, a First Aid kit was fastened to another tree.\u00a0 Someone had written a crude message on\u00a0the First Aid kit case\u00a0implying that anyone who actually needed to use it was weak and worthy of despise.<\/p>\n<p>Clearly the word &#8220;Keep&#8221; in Pugg&#8217;s Keep was used in the sense of a fortress.\u00a0 The top of Steamboat Rock, nearly completely surrounded by cliffs, pretty effectively suited that meaning of the word.\u00a0\u00a0&#8220;Keep&#8221; This quiet, private section of road W of Green Top seemed remote and beautiful on a winter afternoon.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Somewhere W of Green Top, Lupe and SPHP left No. 414.6K to start climbing NE through the forest.\u00a0 There were big boulders and occasional rock outcroppings along the way.\u00a0 The same geological rock formations present at Steamboat Rock were also present here.\u00a0 It was quite possible Lupe would have to find a way up\u00a0over two\u00a0bands of cliffs again to reach the summit of Green Top.\u00a0 It wasn&#8217;t at all certain Lupe would find a route to the top.<\/p>\n<p>Lupe&#8217;s final approach up\u00a0Green Top was from the NW.\u00a0 Fortunately, the rock outcroppings did not form\u00a0continuous cliffs along in here.\u00a0 Lupe had no problem going up the mountain, but it was\u00a0impossible\u00a0to see how\u00a0much farther\u00a0Lupe had to go.\u00a0 Green Top was thickly forested.\u00a0 The young trees were tall, thin and densely packed.<\/p>\n<p>Unlike Steamboat Rock, there wasn&#8217;t much left of the original limestone cap up at the top of Green Top Mountain.\u00a0 A narrow ridge ran NW\/SE.\u00a0 A rocky little scramble up a short slope brought Lupe to the NW end of the summit ridge.<\/p>\n<p>The views were really great!\u00a0 Snowy <strong><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"http:\/\/peakbagger.com\/peak.aspx?pid=6226\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Custer Peak<\/a><\/span> <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">(6,804 ft.)<\/span><\/strong> off to the WNW was the feature attraction, but <strong><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"http:\/\/peakbagger.com\/peak.aspx?pid=6224\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Terry Peak<\/a><\/span> <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">(7,064 ft.)<\/span><\/strong> and a wide swath of the central Black Hills was all on display, too.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_4096\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4096\" style=\"width: 660px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/IMG_0136.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-4096\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-4096\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/IMG_0136-1024x768.jpg?resize=660%2C495\" alt=\"The remnant rocks of the limestone cap at the NW end of the summit ridge on Green Top. White Mansion is the line of limestone cliffs seen to the NE.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The entire slightly elevated summit area was only the size of a large room in a house.\u00a0 The best views were from the SSE around\u00a0to the SW.\u00a0 By now it was maybe\u00a0just 45 minutes until sunset.\u00a0 Green Top was going to be Lupe&#8217;s last peakbagging success of Expedition No. 153.<\/p>\n<p>Lupe and SPHP sat together enjoying the view.\u00a0 SPHP petted and talked to Lupe.\u00a0 It was all very deep and profound stuff.\u00a0 Lupe listened carefully.\u00a0 She understood it all.\u00a0 In fact, she already knew it.\u00a0 SPHP ate an orange.\u00a0 Lupe wasn&#8217;t hungry, even though she hadn&#8217;t eaten all day.<\/p>\n<p>The time to go always comes too quickly.\u00a0 Lupe and SPHP left the summit of Green Top,\u00a0returning to the NW end of the ridge.\u00a0 There, after one last look toward Custer Peak, Lupe and SPHP started down the mountain.\u00a0 This time Lupe stayed\u00a0farther E than she had been coming up.\u00a0 She lost plenty of elevation going down through the thick forest of spindly pines.\u00a0 She passed by lots of purple-gray boulders and rock outcroppings.<\/p>\n<p>The rocks and dense forest ended as Lupe approached the saddle NW of Green Top.\u00a0 \u00a0From the saddle, Lupe and SPHP headed ENE through a snowy field of tall grass and widely scattered pines to reach USFS Road No. 155.1A.\u00a0 To the NW, No. 155.1A went up Wilson Gulch, but\u00a0Lupe and SPHP followed the road S between Green Top and White Mansion.<\/p>\n<p>Cows were mooing at a very secluded ranch NW of White Mansion.\u00a0 No. 155.1A was very snowy.\u00a0 There were deep ruts in the snow where some jeep or high clearance vehicle had spun its way through.\u00a0 E of Green Top, Lupe and SPHP didn&#8217;t see the sunset.\u00a0 The temperature dropped as SPHP trudged S through the snow.\u00a0 Two big,\u00a0erect American Dingo ears, and an arching\u00a0curly tail led the way.<\/p>\n<p>The cows left behind, the only sound was the soft crunch of Dingo paws on the now hardening snow.\u00a0 Before Lupe reached the intersection with USFS Road No. 414.6K, she heard them.\u00a0 It was that\u00a0moment\u00a0of twilight when the branches of the trees are an impenetrable\u00a0black against the palest blue sky.\u00a0 The wild dogs of the forest, the coyotes, were howling.<\/p>\n<p>For just a few minutes, the coyotes howled to one another.\u00a0 For just a few minutes, Lupe listened attentively to the call of the wild.\u00a0 Then she and SPHP\u00a0crunched on in silence\u00a0along the snowy road (5:23 PM, 35\u00b0).<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_4094\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4094\" style=\"width: 660px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/IMG_0134.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-4094\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-4094\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/IMG_0134-1024x768.jpg?resize=660%2C495\" alt=\"Looking SSE from Green Top.
