Hills, SD Expedition No. 115 &#8211; Campaign Hill, Peak 6048 &#038; Flag Mountain (1-18-15)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>There was too much snow, more than a foot on the ground.\u00a0 It was everywhere, too.\u00a0 Lupe sank in up to her belly even where it hadn&#8217;t drifted.\u00a0 Clearly going N had been a mistake.\u00a0 With a forecast high in the low\u00a050&#8217;s \u00b0F, SPHP had chosen four peakbagging objectives for Lupe near Galena in the northern Black Hills.\u00a0 However, as SPHP drove N on Hwy 385, the amount of snow around had increased steadily.<\/p>\n<p>Lupe\u00a0and SPHP were at Custer Crossing,\u00a0and hadn&#8217;t even reached the starting point for the day&#8217;s planned expedition\u00a0near Galena yet.\u00a0 Lupe loves the snow, but this wasn&#8217;t going to work.\u00a0 A day spent out here, and even Lupe would wind up freezing and exhausted.\u00a0 Time for Plan B.\u00a0 Lupe and SPHP got back in the G6 and headed S.<\/p>\n<p>NW of Hill City, Lupe and SPHP hopped back out of the G6 at Newton Lake, (a little pond really) on Newton Creek.\u00a0 It was 9:32 AM, but only 35\u00b0F.\u00a0 Maybe the day wasn&#8217;t going to be as warm as advertised.\u00a0 There was still snow around, but\u00a0much less than\u00a0back at Custer Crossing.\u00a0 This would work.<\/p>\n<p>Lupe started off\u00a0heading W on the Mickelson Trail.\u00a0 She soon found some squirrels to bark at, so she was happy.\u00a0 The day was getting off to a good start after all.\u00a0 Lupe met a couple of cross country skiers on the trail, and sniffed with their big yellow lab.\u00a0\u00a0Less than a mile from Newton Lake, Lupe left the\u00a0Mickelson Trail and turned S on\u00a0USFS Road No. 386.<a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/P1050831.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-3809\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-3809\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/P1050831-1024x768.jpg?resize=660%2C495\" alt=\"\" width=\"660\" major gravel road.\u00a0 It was slick with packed snow and ice.\u00a0 The\u00a0road\u00a0curved around as it climbed.\u00a0 SPHP trudged along the\u00a0uninteresting big road.\u00a0 Lupe\u00a0was having some luck finding squirrels to bark at in the forest, though, so she was\u00a0busy dashing off here and there having a good time.<\/p>\n<p>About a mile\u00a0S of Deerfield\u00a0Road, Lupe and SPHP reached the intersection with USFS Road No. 386.1B, a minor road much more to SPHP&#8217;s liking.\u00a0 Lupe and SPHP followed\u00a0No. 386.1B.\u00a0 It went E until it\u00a0got close to the W slopes of <strong><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"http:\/\/peakbagger.com\/peak.aspx?pid=57030\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Smith Mountain<\/a> <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">(5,897 ft.) <\/span><\/span><\/strong>and then turned S.\u00a0 Lupe stuck with No. 386.1B until it got close to the S end of Smith Mountain.\u00a0 Then Lupe and SPHP took off heading SSW through the forest.<\/p>\n<p>Lupe soon came to a big open field,\u00a0which she and SPHP crossed,\u00a0continuing SSW.\u00a0 Lupe eventually returned to the forest S of the field.\u00a0\u00a0Before long, Lupe ran into\u00a0USFS Road No. 727.1F at a point\u00a0just NW of <strong><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"http:\/\/peakbagger.com\/peak.aspx?pid=57028\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Flag Mountain<\/a><\/span><\/strong>\u00a0<strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">(5,896 ft.)<\/span><\/strong>.\u00a0 No. 727.1F took Lupe S\u00a0skirting just W of Flag Mountain.\u00a0 It linked up with No.\u00a0727 just a little W of the saddle between Flag Mountain on the N, and This photo looks W.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Of course, SPHP actually had a\u00a0peakbagging goal in mind for Lupe.\u00a0 Back on Black Hills, SD Expedition No. 106 on 11-28-14, Lupe climbed a couple of mountains\u00a0she had already passed by today &#8211; Smith Mountain and Flag Mountain.\u00a0 On Expedition No. 106, she hadn&#8217;t had time to continue S to <strong><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"http:\/\/peakbagger.com\/peak.aspx?pid=57029\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Campaign Hill<\/a> <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">(5,800 ft.)<\/span><\/span><\/strong>, but now she was practically there.<\/p>\n<p>Lupe and SPHP went E on No. 727 just a few hundred feet to the high point of the saddle.\u00a0 There, Lupe and SPHP left the road to start climbing straight up the N face of Campaign Hill.\u00a0\u00a0Lupe only had to gain a little over 200 feet of elevation from the saddle to reach the summit ridge.\u00a0 She reached the top of the ridge near the E end.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_3812\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3812\" style=\"width: 660px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/P1050835.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-3812\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-3812\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/P1050835-1024x768.jpg?resize=660%2C495\" alt=\"Lupe reached the top of the Campaign Hill summit ridge close to this point near the E end. <strong><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Peak <a href=\"https:\/\/peakbagger.com\/peak.aspx?pid=55540\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">6048<\/span><\/a><\/span><\/strong>?\u00a0 It was just a mile to the S of Campaign Hill, and Lupe and SPHP had never been there before, either.\u00a0 So Lupe and SPHP headed SSW down along the ridge line from Campaign Hill.\u00a0 To the E, the terrain dropped off steeply.\u00a0 To the W, the terrain sloped away much more gently.<\/p>\n<p>A little less than halfway to Peak 6048, there was an opening in the forest along the ridge line as it was dropping down into a saddle.\u00a0 Here Lupe got her first clear look at Peak 6048.\u00a0 The steep N face was snowy, and appeared to be covered with a maze of deadfall timber.\u00a0 Lupe could see that Peak 6048 had a double top, with the true summit being to the E.\u00a0 It also looked like there\u00a0were rocks at the E end of the mountain where there might be some pretty decent views.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_3818\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3818\" style=\"width: 660px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a saddle, and then climbed over a small hill heading S.\u00a0 Beyond the small hill, the ridge line leading\u00a0to Peak 6048 continued.\u00a0 The ground to the E still fell off sharply, but to the W\u00a0the land sloped gently toward sunlit forests and little fields full of snow and light.<\/p>\n<p>The climb up Peak 6048 from the NW was slow.\u00a0\u00a0A few inches of snow made everything slippery.\u00a0 The worst obstacle was\u00a0the large amount of deadfall timber to be navigated.\u00a0 Lupe reached the NW high point on Peak 6048.\u00a0 There were some pretty big rocks up here.\u00a0 Lupe found a cairn at the top of them.\u00a0 Trees blocked the views in most directions, but it was possible to get a pretty decent view off to the NW.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_3819\" It would be more relaxing than all this standing next to the edge of cliffs!&#8221;<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>After hanging out at the E cliff for a little while, it was time to go.\u00a0 Lupe and SPHP climbed back up to the true summit of <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Peak<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/peakbagger.com\/peak.aspx?pid=55540\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">6048<\/span><\/a><\/strong><\/span>.\u00a0 The 2nd large rock outcropping, the one that\u00a0wasn&#8217;t quite as high, was nearby to the NW.\u00a0 Lupe and SPHP went over there for a few minutes.\u00a0 Even though these rocks weren&#8217;t quite as high as the true summit, the whole rock formation was more interesting.\u00a0\u00a0The American Dingo\u00a0graciously\u00a0posed for a couple of photos.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_3828\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3828\" style=\"width: 660px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/P1050853.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-3828\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-3828\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/P1050853-768x1024.jpg?resize=660%2C880\" alt=\"Yeah, these rocks are pretty cool! again.\u00a0 Before Lupe and SPHP could even reach the road, the sunset suddenly\u00a0developed into a beautiful display of color.\u00a0 It almost looked like the forest was on fire!<\/p>\n<figure No. 386.1B again.\u00a0 The rest of Lupe&#8217;s return trip to the G6\u00a0was just a retracement of the first part of her day&#8217;s journey.\u00a0 She still had 3 miles to go to get to the G6.<\/p>\n<p>Lupe and SPHP trudged onward in the gathering gloom.\u00a0 Every now and then, Lupe would hear\u00a0something undetectable to SPHP in the forest.\u00a0 Each time she raced off to investigate, returning to SPHP a few minutes later with a big grin on her face, as if some animal out there had told her a really good joke.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">It was 6:40 PM, and still a balmy 43\u00b0F out when Lupe reached the G6.\u00a0 Lupe jumped very willingly into the G6, and curled up.\u00a0 Black Hills, SD Expedition No. 115 was over.\u00a0 It had been a great
