Photo looks N.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Hoping for the best, SPHP stuck with the use trail too long before giving up on it.\u00a0 Delaying the steep ascent required to get up onto the ridge had been a mistake.\u00a0 Looper faced a tough climb when she finally made her move.\u00a0 Any steeper, and SPHP would have been clinging to stuff.\u00a0 During pauses to gasp for breath, SPHP noticed that the loose gray soil was full of little white seashells, or maybe they were snail shells?<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_36873\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-36873\" style=\"width: 660px\" sagebrush and plants with big arrow-shaped leaves.\u00a0 Scattered trees provided shade which wasn&#8217;t needed yet, but would be soon enough.<\/p>\n<p>Even the ridge climbed at a fairly aggressive rate.\u00a0 Before long, Lupe was starting to get some views.\u00a0 Somewhat worryingly, toward the S, the sky was turning white.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_36875\" #0000ff;\"><strong>Richard Carey<\/strong><\/span><\/a> has been here!\u00a0 Remember Cathedral Mountain?<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Up in the Brooks Range in Alaska, SPHP?\u00a0 Of course, I do!\u00a0 Oh, that was a glorious day!\u00a0 What a magnificent mountain!<\/em><\/p>\n<p>No understatement there. \u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/adventuresoflupe.com\/?p=13809\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>Cathedral Mountain<\/strong><\/span><\/a> had been where Lupe first encountered one of Richard Carey&#8217;s signature red tin cans back in 2017.\u00a0 Lifting it, SPHP wasn&#8217;t surprised to see a jar containing a small red spiral notebook, a pen, and a pencil.\u00a0 Sure enough, the first entry in this little registry was by Richard Carey.<a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/IMG_1362-scaled.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large Rogers?<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Yes.\u00a0 Remember the Chandalar Shelf not too far from Atigun Pass?<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Where we were going to climb <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/peakbagger.com\/peak.aspx?pid=35176\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Table Mountain<\/span><\/a> <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">(6,314 ft.)<\/span><\/strong>, but had to turn back due to rain and fog, SPHP?<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Yeah.\u00a0 Richard and Shelley climbed Table Mountain together, too.\u00a0 There&#8217;s a picture of Shelley on Peakbagger.com standing next to a cairn up there that&#8217;s as tall as she is.\u00a0 I looked at that picture so many times before we made our trivial attempt, that I almost expected we would find Shelley still standing there, if we had made it to the top.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The registry contained only one other entry.\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/peakbagger.com\/climber\/climber.aspx?cid=11811\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>Dustin Erickson<\/strong><\/span><\/a> had been here on 6-1-21.\u00a0 SPHP added Lupe&#8217;s name before returning the registry to the jar and hiding it under the red tin can back inside the cairn.<\/p>\n<p>For an hour, Loop and SPHP remained there beneath the solar panel.\u00a0 Every now and then the Carolina Dog had to move a little to stay in the shade.\u00a0 She munched at her Taste of the Wild or tried to doze while SPHP muttered away.<\/p>\n<p><em>Funny, isn&#8217;t it, Loop?<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Oh, yes!\u00a0 Absolutely hilarious!\u00a0 Care to mention what you&#8217;re talking about, SPHP?<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>All the names we see on Peakbagger.com.\u00a0 Thousands of them!\u00a0 At first, they&#8217;re all meaningless, but over time, some stand out.\u00a0 Usually because we&#8217;ve been to some of the same places.\u00a0 Like our first ill-fated peakbagging hero, <a href=\"https:\/\/peakbagger.com\/climber\/climber.aspx?cid=601\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>Edward Earl<\/strong><\/span><\/a>, or <a href=\"https:\/\/peakbagger.com\/climber\/climber.aspx?cid=1085\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Tim Worth<\/span><\/strong><\/a>!\u00a0 Not always, though.\u00a0 Yet after a while you start to feel like you somehow know these people, almost like they&#8217;re personal friends, even though we&#8217;ve never met or had any contact.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Haven&#8217;t we exchanged a few emails with Richard Carey, SPHP?\u00a0 I know we did!<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>True enough.\u00a0 Smart guy!\u00a0 Richard&#8217;s been to many exotic places, knows a lot of history, and writes extremely accurate trip reports.\u00a0 But I&#8217;m not just talking about Mr. Carey, but the whole peakbagging &#8220;community&#8221;, if you want to call it that.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Well, we know <a href=\"http:\/\/adventuresoflupe.com\/?p=10406\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Jobe Wymore<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/a> and <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><a style=\"color: #ff0000;\" href=\"http:\/\/adventuresoflupe.com\/?p=16414\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Dave Covill<\/strong><\/a><\/span>, SPHP!\u00a0 And they&#8217;re both terrific!\u00a0 No doubt there are lots of great individuals, and canines I might add, out wandering in the mountains like us.\u00a0 Glad they&#8217;re not all here right now, though!\u00a0 We like it remote and secluded, don&#8217;t we?<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Yeah, most of the time.\u00a0 Sometimes fun to have company.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>We&#8217;re always together, SPHP!<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>True dat, sweet puppy!<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Bradley Mountain was quiet enough.\u00a0 Unfortunately, the morning&#8217;s white sky had foretold the situation.\u00a0 A smoky haze was in all directions, and getting worse, carried in on a SW breeze.\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/peakbagger.com\/peak.aspx?pid=5218\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>Grand Teton<\/strong><\/span><\/a> <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>(13,770 ft.<\/strong><strong>)<\/strong><\/span> had been faintly visible far to the N when Lupe first reached the summit, but no sign of it now.<\/p>\n<p>Regardless, it was about time for a tour of the summit region.\u00a0 Splendid mountains everywhere, but the smoke was bad enough to significantly degrade all views.\u00a0 A glimpse of relatively nearby highlights was about it.\u00a0 These included <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/peakbagger.com\/peak.aspx?pid=23939\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Ferry Peak<\/span><\/a> <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">(9,612 ft.)<\/span><\/strong>, a distinctive light gray ridge to the NW, the S end of the Palisades Reservoir to the W, and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/peakbagger.com\/peak.aspx?pid=5428\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Stewart Mountain<\/span><\/a> <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">(10,103 ft.)<\/span><\/strong> to the S.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_36911\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-36911\" style=\"width: 660px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a Photo looks SE.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The descent via the same route went fine, fast and easy until SPHP made a change.\u00a0 Lupe was already clear down to the small valley the use trail had crossed on the way up, when SPHP decided that maybe going down the valley would be better than following the ridge.<\/p>\n<p>Huge mistake!\u00a0 Started out OK, but soon Lupe was plunging steeply through thick vegetation neck high on SPHP.\u00a0 Slow, miserable!\u00a0 Thankfully, the American Dingo didn&#8217;t cliff out.\u00a0 The jungle ordeal seemed endless, but the situation eventually improved.<\/p>\n<p>Finally popping out on Greys River Road 200 yards W of the RAV4, a steady stream of pickups and ATV&#8217;s roaring by kicked up clouds of dust during the hot trudge along the road.\u00a0 <em>(End 5:56 PM, 87\u00baF)<\/em><\/p>\n<p>All the dispersed camping sites along the Greys River were taken this late in the day.\u00a0 What now?\u00a0 Lupe still had plans in the Wyoming Range.\u00a0 Last year, the smoke from wildfires farther W hadn&#8217;t chased Loop out of Montana until August 10th.\u00a0 Seemed incredible it could be happening a whole month earlier here in Wyoming in 2021, yet the smoke was bad in Alpine.<\/p>\n<p>Too hot down here in any case.\u00a0 In the end, SPHP drove all the way back to the Kilgore Creek trailhead near <a href=\"http:\/\/adventuresoflupe.com\/?p=36704\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>Hoback Peak<\/strong><\/span><\/a>\u00a0where Lupe had been 2 nights ago.<\/p>\n<p><em>7-10-21, 7:18 AM, 46\u00baF, Kilgore Creek trailhead<\/em> &#8211; Precisely as feared, too smoky!\u00a0 The Wyoming Range had to be abandoned.\u00a0 Entering Pinedale an hour later, even the Wind River Range was enveloped in haze.\u00a0 Far to the NE, the Bighorn Range became Plan B.\u00a0 By mid-afternoon, Lupe was there.\u00a0 N of the Owl Creek Mountains, the sky had been an encouraging blue again.<\/p>\n<p>Loopster spent the rest of the afternoon and evening at the Lake Point picnic ground overlooking Meadowlark Lake.\u00a0 Just before sunset, she took the short trail up to <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/peakbagger.com\/peak.aspx?pid=56640\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">High Park Lookout<\/span><\/a> <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">(9,477 ft.)<\/span><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_36926\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-36926\" style=\"width: 660px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/IMG_1385-scaled.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-36926\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/IMG_1385-1024x768.jpg?resize=660%2C495\" alt=\"\" width=\"660\" height=\"495\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/IMG_1385-scaled.jpg?resize=1024%2C768&amp;ssl=1 1024w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/IMG_1385-scaled.jpg?resize=300%2C225&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/IMG_1385-scaled.jpg?resize=768%2C576&amp;ssl=1 768w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/IMG_1385-scaled.jpg?resize=1536%2C1152&amp;ssl=1 1536w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/IMG_1385-scaled.jpg?w=1651&amp;ssl=1 1651w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/IMG_1385-scaled.jpg?w=1320&amp;ssl=1 1320w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 660px) 100vw, 660px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-36926\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><strong>Bighorn Range<\/strong> from <strong>High Park Lookout<\/strong>.
