Day 13 of Lupe’s 2012 Dingo Vacation to the West Coast.<\/em><\/p>\n

Today, Lupe was going to see the ocean for the first time ever!\u00a0 Well, not the broad expanse of the open sea, but she was at least going to see Puget Sound in Seattle.\u00a0 Lupe was nearly to Seattle already!<\/p>\n

First things first, though.\u00a0 Lupe’s day started with a visit to a dog park along the Cedar River in Renton, WA just to get some exercise and sniff the morning air.\u00a0 The dog park turned out to be long and narrow, as it followed the Cedar River.\u00a0 There wasn’t any access to the river itself, which flowed down in a steep narrow gorge.\u00a0 A bike path went through the park.\u00a0 Lupe had to be careful.\u00a0 Bikers whizzed silently by\u00a0with some frequency.<\/p>\n

Even though the dog park was in the city, it was cool, shady and not too crowded.\u00a0 Trees and blackberry bushes grew along the bike path.\u00a0 There were grassy areas where Lupe could run.\u00a0 Lupe searched the trees for squirrels with some success.\u00a0 In the meantime, Lanis and SPHP discussed where to go next.\u00a0 Lanis was interested in seeing the Washington Park Arboretum<\/a><\/span><\/strong> in Seattle.<\/p>\n

Seattle, WA – a different type of wilderness than Lupe is used to.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

The Washington Park Arboretum covers 230 acres.\u00a0\u00a0A\u00a0wide variety of trees, bushes, flowers and plants of all types were growing in great profusion.\u00a0 Lupe, Lanis and SPHP wandered the pathways looking at the displays.\u00a0 It wasn’t long before SPHP noticed that Lupe was stopping frequently to lick her left front paw.\u00a0 On examination, there was a little round circle on her biggest pad.\u00a0 Lupe had stepped on a blackberry thorn back at the dog park in Renton.<\/p>\n

The Washington Park Arboretum\u00a0features many beautiful plants and flowers.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

\"Washington<\/a>Lupe’s sore paw put an end to touring the Washington Park Arboretum.\u00a0 Lupe needed help getting that blackberry thorn out of her paw!\u00a0 At a Safeway store, SPHP bought tweezers and a set of needles.\u00a0 SPHP operated on Lupe’s paw.\u00a0 Lupe was very cooperative.\u00a0 She clearly understood that SPHP was trying to help her.\u00a0 Unfortunately, at first SPHP didn’t seem to be making any progress removing the thorn.<\/p>\n

Suddenly, with a little flick of the needle, the blackberry thorn popped out.\u00a0 It came out all in one piece, leaving a small round hole in Lupe’s pad.\u00a0 Her paw wasn’t sore anymore.\u00a0 She quit licking it, and forgot all about it.\u00a0 A few days later, when SPHP examined her paw, there was no sign of the hole where the thorn had been.<\/p>\n

Once\u00a0the painful blackberry thorn was removed, it was time to go see Puget Sound.\u00a0 Lupe saw the ocean for the first time at Golden Gardens Park.<\/p>\n

There was a nice beach at Golden Gardens Park, but no dogs were allowed on it. Lupe saw the ocean, but she didn’t get to swim or wade in it, or even run along the beach.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

Ravens were flying around looking for tidbits on the lawn near the parking area where the Element was parked.\u00a0 Lanis became interested in feeding them.\u00a0 The ravens seemed to like graham crackers.\u00a0 Lanis’ flock of ravens grew rapidly.\u00a0 Seagulls noticed the action and started joining in.<\/p>\n

Lanis’ flock started growing rapidly.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

\"Seagull<\/a>The\u00a0decimation of Lanis’ graham cracker supply led to a loss of interest by his flock of followers, which soon abandoned him.\u00a0 Although Lupe hadn’t been allowed on the beach, she\u00a0had at least seen the ocean.\u00a0 Lupe had to be content with that for the time being.\u00a0 Maybe it was time to check out the Space Needle?<\/p>\n

Lupe saw\u00a0the Space Needle, but there wasn’t any open\u00a0parking nearby.\u00a0 Lanis was ambivalent about paying to go up\u00a0in the\u00a0Space Needle, anyway.\u00a0 Carolina Dogs\u00a0aren’t generally that interested architecture,\u00a0although Lupe\u00a0would have liked the view from the top.\u00a0 SPHP was pretty certain the view would have been fabulous.\u00a0 However, since Lupe probably would have been prohibited from going, and there didn’t seem to be any place to park the Element, Lanis drove on.<\/p>\n

It had been 5 days since Lupe’s first experience with the luxury of motel life back in Bozeman, MT.\u00a0 Lanis and SPHP both needed to get cleaned up,\u00a0and were looking forward\u00a0to soft beds again.\u00a0 Lupe certainly\u00a0wasn’t going to object!\u00a0 Soon Lupe was checked into a motel in Tacoma.\u00a0 Now that she had a better idea what to expect, Lupe acted like living in a motel was the most natural thing in the world.<\/p>\n

In the evening, Lupe, Lanis and SPHP went to a\u00a0park.\u00a0 There was a big pond, trees\u00a0fully equipped with squirrels, and a\u00a0very spacious lawn for Lupe to race around on.\u00a0 The park was a popular place.\u00a0 Lots of people and other dogs were around.\u00a0 Lupe played Frisbee with Lanis and SPHP.\u00a0 Sometimes Lupe invited herself to play Frisbee with other people when their Frisbees strayed conveniently close.\u00a0 The sun set.\u00a0 It grew dark.\u00a0 Time to head back to the motel for a long luxurious snooze.<\/p>\n
