Coast.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Yellowstone National Park\u00a0was close to where Lupe was staying on the Clarks Fork of the Yellowstone River.\u00a0 After a wonderful long day spent out in the Beartooth Mountains going to Beauty and Becker Lakes the day before, Lupe was going to get to tour Yellowstone, the first National Park in the whole world!<\/p>\n<p>Lupe entered Yellowstone National Park at the NE entrance W of Cooke City, MT.\u00a0 The highway followed Soda Butte Creek downstream to its confluence with the Lamar River.\u00a0 As frequently happens in Yellowstone, suddenly there were vehicles stopped ahead on the highway.\u00a0 The cause was soon clear.\u00a0 A herd of buffalo was using the highway, too!<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_3194\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3194\" style=\"width: 660px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/WP_0018321.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" astonished to see the herd of huge buffalo coming right for the Element.\u00a0 This alarming situation demanded immediate action!\u00a0 Lupe&#8217;s hackles rose up from her head to her tail.\u00a0 She sprang to the defense of the Honda Element, as it became completely engulfed by the buffalo herd.\u00a0 She leaped wildly from one window to\u00a0the next\u00a0barking like a Dingo possessed.<\/p>\n<p>Lupe loves to bark at cows.\u00a0 She may have thought the buffalo were cows.\u00a0 If so, these cows weren&#8217;t acting right.\u00a0 None of them ran away.\u00a0 In fact, none of them seemed to pay\u00a0the least bit of\u00a0attention to the frenzied Carolina Dog just a few feet away as they ambled by the Element.<a gave it everything she had.\u00a0 She bounded back and forth.\u00a0 She scrunched herself up on the dashboard in front of the steering wheel, barking till she foamed at the mouth.\u00a0 The only real result was that Lanis\u00a0got battered by a wildly swinging Dingo tail.<a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/P1030636.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" by.\u00a0 The proud American Dingo could finally rest.\u00a0 Her barker was totally dry.\u00a0 She needed a drink!\u00a0 Who knew Yellowstone would be so exciting?\u00a0 The place was just swarming rests satisfied with a job bravely performed.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Lanis turned S at the Tower-Roosevelt junction.\u00a0 Lupe, Lanis and SPHP soon stopped at Tower Falls.\u00a0 Regulations in Yellowstone don&#8217;t allow dogs on any trails, or in the back country.\u00a0 Unfortunately, that meant that Lupe wasn&#8217;t going to get to see all the glories of Yellowstone up close.\u00a0 The entire time Lupe was in Yellowstone, Lanis and SPHP\u00a0were going to have to\u00a0take turns staying with Lupe while the other checked out Yellowstone&#8217;s scenic wonders.<\/p>\n<p>SPHP stayed with Lupe, while Lanis checked out Tower Falls.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_3201\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3201\" style=\"width: 660px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a up a short drive to the S &#8211; Lower Yellowstone Falls and the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_3146\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3146\" style=\"width: was kind of left out, since many of the geysers weren&#8217;t close enough to the parking lots or the highway where she could see them.\u00a0 A few were, though.\u00a0 Lupe did get to sniff around near the Element some, and she seemed\u00a0happy enough with\u00a0the situation. \u00a0Lanis and SPHP took turns staying with her.<\/p>\n<p><a Midway Geyser Basin was a\u00a0highlight of the geyser basin tour.\u00a0 The Excelsior\u00a0Geyser was once the largest geyser in the world, but its last known major eruptions occurred in the 1880&#8217;s.\u00a0 Back then it spouted boiling water 300 feet into the air.\u00a0 Now it is a large blue pool of water which boils up vigorously at frequent intervals, and then dies down again without really erupting.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_3158\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3158\" style=\"width: 660px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a River.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Near the Excelsior Geyser in the Midway Geyser Basin was another very impressive hot spring.\u00a0 Grand Prismatic Spring is best viewed from above, from which vantage point it appears as a large steamy\u00a0blue\u00a0sun rimmed with greens and yellows.\u00a0 Orange flames radiate\u00a0outward wherever water overflows the pool&#8217;s edges.<\/p>\n<p>The different colors are caused by different types of algae and organisms that thrive in different temperature bands.\u00a0 It&#8217;s hard to get a good impression of the whole from the ground, the time Lanis and SPHP were done taking tours of the Midway Geyser Basin.\u00a0 There were way more basins, trails and rare thermal features, even in just this little section of\u00a0Yellowstone National Park, than could possibly be visited in a single day.<\/p>\n<p>The last area Lupe, Lanis and SPHP visited before sunset was the Lower Geyser Basin.\u00a0 Again, Lanis and SPHP took turns waited, the sun sank behind dead trees cooked by a change in the flow of waters heated by the giant Yellowstone caldera.\u00a0 The Yellowstone caldera is the site of a supervolcano which has erupted at intervals of roughly 650,000 years three times in the last 2 million years.\u00a0 The last eruption was 640,000 years ago, so on a geological time scale, the next Yellowstone supervolcano eruption is coming due soon.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">So someday, Yellowstone will be even more exciting that it is now.\u00a0 Too exciting even for bold-spirited Carolina Dogs.<a
