12-31-19, 11:00 PM at home<\/em> –<\/p>\n

Looks like we’re going to make it to the Year of Perfect Vision, Loop.\u00a0 2020 in another hour.<\/em><\/p>\n

Oddly, that actually did sound like some sort of accomplishment.<\/p>\n

Lupe snuggled closer, staring at SPHP with worried, mournful eyes.\u00a0 SPHP petted her.\u00a0 For 2 hours, she had been able to hear fireworks now and then.\u00a0 Ever since a terrifying experience with fireworks when Loop was a puppy, even distant gunfire, or any sort of bang or explosion made her want to hide.<\/p>\n

The early New Year’s fireworks were making the Carolina Dog nervous, but they weren’t why she was mournful.\u00a0 Life had become dreadfully dull.\u00a0 SPHP didn’t do anything with her anymore.\u00a0 Maybe it was time for a new SPHP?\u00a0 Apparently the old one was about shot.<\/p>\n

It had all started a few days before Lupe’s birthday.\u00a0 Nothing much, just a tickle in SPHP’s throat.\u00a0 By the time Lupe turned 9 on December 14th, the tickle was a “chest cold”.\u00a0 Some days SPHP seemed to get better, but the overall trend was worse.\u00a0 More and more coughing, choking up more and more ghastly phlegm.<\/p>\n

Even so, until recently SPHP had been up and about almost like normal.\u00a0 The only real difference was that Lupe hadn’t been on a single Black Hills Expedition since November.\u00a0 On Christmas Day there had been a short trip to visit Felix and Asher, but the next day SPHP felt chilled and had taken to bed.<\/p>\n

Could barely eat or drink anything at all.\u00a0 Everything sounded terrible, or made more phlegm.\u00a0 For days now, SPHP had just slept or laid there coughing.\u00a0 Meanwhile, Lupe suffered almost completely ignored, waiting endlessly for SPHP to get better.<\/p>\n

Surely SPHP would get better!\u00a0 SPHP was hardly ever sick.\u00a0 Confidence had been at least slightly shaken, though.\u00a0 Ever since the 26th, SPHP had been coughing up more and more blood.<\/p>\n

Made it to 2020, but the Year of Perfect Vision was about to get off to a rough start.<\/p>\n

1-2-20, Urgent Care – <\/em>Everyone had been wrong.\u00a0 Doctor said both lungs clear.\u00a0 SPHP didn’t have pneumonia.\u00a0 Merely “acute bronchitis”.\u00a0 No big deal.\u00a0 Zithromax was going to do the trick.\u00a0 6 pills over 5 days.\u00a0 Easy!<\/p>\n

1-7-20 –<\/em> Lo and behold, the Zithromax actually did work!\u00a0 Nowhere near 100% yet, but definitely much improved.\u00a0 Not coughing so much.\u00a0 Far less blood.\u00a0 Still some pretty dull days for the American Dingo, but SPHP was up and about at least part of the time now.\u00a0 Everyone had been wrong about the pneumonia thing, but they’d been right about going to see the doctor.<\/p>\n

Lesson learned!\u00a0 Eh, maybe.<\/p>\n

1-25-20<\/em> – Still no new adventures in the Black Hills, even though SPHP was almost completely well now.\u00a0 The Carolina Dog never did get to visit New Year’s Eve Peak<\/span><\/a> (6,046 ft.) <\/span><\/strong>this year.\u00a0 At least today was going to be better.\u00a0 SPHP said she was going to get to go to Grandma’s house.\u00a0 Lupe hadn’t been there in more than a month.\u00a0 She was all excited!<\/p>\n

Mush and David were at Grandma’s house when Lupe arrived.\u00a0 Christy, a friend of theirs was, too!\u00a0 The more, the merrier!\u00a0 Except it wasn’t.\u00a0 Strange things had been happening out at Grandma’s house ever since 2018.\u00a0 Now that 2020 was here, something was definitely wrong.<\/p>\n

Mush and David’s pickup and big horse trailer were in the driveway.\u00a0 Hours of commotion.\u00a0 Lots of Grandma’s things were being loaded into the trailer.\u00a0 Even SPHP was in on it.\u00a0 Two trips.\u00a0 By the end of the day, Grandma wasn’t at home anymore.\u00a0 She had moved to a big building where Dingoes weren’t allowed in, a “senior living center”.\u00a0 No fun at all!<\/p>\n

The only good things today were riding in the truck, and a trip with SPHP to the cul-de-sac.<\/p>\n

1-27-20<\/em> –\u00a0 Guess we better get at it, Looper.\u00a0 Pretty much up to us now.<\/em><\/p>\n

What did that mean?\u00a0 Turned out it meant a trip to Grandma’s old house every single day.\u00a0 Suddenly Lupe was getting to go out there 7 days a week, unless there was a big snow.\u00a0 Sadly, Grandma was never there.\u00a0 No one was.\u00a0 It was adventures in getting Grandma’s house ready for sale!\u00a0 Cleaning, painting, various projects and repairs, new carpets, disposing of everything still in the house or garage\u00a0 – all of Grandma’s treasures that she no longer had room for and couldn’t keep any more.<\/p>\n

Dullsville!\u00a0 Most of the time literally adventures in watching paint dry.<\/p>\n

Oh, there were some good things about it.\u00a0 Better than acute bronchitis, that was for sure.\u00a0 Riding in the G6 was fun!\u00a0 Every day Lupe got to bark at the gas pipeline, cows, and deer on the way out there and back.\u00a0 Sometimes there were trips to stores for supplies.<\/p>\n

Every morning Loop got to go around the house to sniff the air and see the canyon out back.\u00a0 Usually at least a couple more times during the day, too, just as a break from the paint drying drudgery.\u00a0 Sometimes SPHP threw the squeaker ball for her.<\/p>\n

SPHP worked on the rooms one at a time.\u00a0 The first one done was the big family room in the basement.<\/p>\n

Some of Grandma’s things had to be sold.\u00a0 SPHP washed her car.\u00a0 Lanis helped by placing the ad for it.\u00a0 Lupe got to star as Adventure Used Cars sales representative.\u00a0 On Valentine’s Day, two men came to look at it.\u00a0 They bought it the next day.<\/p>\n

Whenever the weather turned nice, SPHP switched to outdoor projects.\u00a0 Those were more fun!\u00a0 Loopster could roam around.<\/p>\n

3-4-20. Taking down part of an old fence. 2020 was so messed up! March came in like a lamb.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

Gradually rooms were getting done.\u00a0 In early March, men came to install new carpets in the 2 N bedrooms.\u00a0 Most other rooms had already gotten new floor coverings in 2019.\u00a0 Grandma had known all along that sooner or later she would be moving.\u00a0 She just hadn’t known exactly when.<\/p>\n

The house still wasn’t done, though.\u00a0 2 more weeks went by.\u00a0 The living and dining rooms were the last ones SPHP painted.<\/p>\n

For nearly 2 months now, the grand highlight of every day had been at least one walk up to the cul-de-sac at the end of the road.\u00a0 Lupe had been up to the cul-de-sac almost every time she’d visited Grandma ever since she’d been a tiny puppy.<\/p>\n

Naturally, when the last of the painting was done on 3-19-20, she went up to the cul-de-sac yet again.<\/p>\n

The house still wasn’t done.\u00a0 A few more days, though, and it would be.<\/p>\n

The next to the last day was dark and snowy.\u00a0 As Lupe headed up to the cul-de-sac again near the end of the day, the frozen scene fit in with the general mood.\u00a0 Nearly 2 months spent on this house project.\u00a0 Perhaps it had all been for naught?<\/p>\n

In those 2 months, the world had changed.\u00a0 The coronavirus had come to America.\u00a0 People were getting sick and dying.\u00a0 Millions more were losing their jobs as states deliberately started shutting down their economies.\u00a0 The stock market was plunging.\u00a0 Talk of not only a recession, but maybe a depression.\u00a0 Grandma might have been better off sticking a for sale sign in the yard the day after she moved while the market was still strong.<\/p>\n

Or maybe never moving away at all.\u00a0 A month after she’d made the move, the senior living center clamped down.\u00a0 Precautions against the virus.\u00a0 No outside visitors allowed.\u00a0 Only staff and residents.\u00a0 Lately the residents had been confined to their apartments.\u00a0 No more socializing in the big dining room, which had been one of the reasons to move in the first place.\u00a0 Once a day, someone brought Grandma a big meal.\u00a0 Other than that, she was a virtual prisoner of the coronavirus.<\/p>\n

Of course, Looper didn’t know any of this.\u00a0 This dark trip to the cul-de-sac was just a fun walk at the end of another otherwise dull day!<\/p>\n

The next day was sunny and bright.\u00a0 The snow was melting fast.\u00a0 Beneath the pines, it felt like it was raining.\u00a0 By noon, Grandma’s house was all done.\u00a0 That afternoon, SPHP obtained permission from the senior living center to take Grandma back to see the house she’d lived in for more than a third of a century for the last time.<\/p>\n

Out on the deck. The verdict is in!<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

Grandma thought the house had never been so beautiful!\u00a0 At least that was something good.<\/p>\n

The preparation was done.\u00a0 Now to sell the home!\u00a0 A Realtor had been in touch with SPHP.\u00a0 She said she had clients who were very interested in Grandma’s house.\u00a0 Over the course of several days, a market analysis was prepared.\u00a0 A fair price was set.\u00a0 Permission was granted to show the property.\u00a0 The Realtor got her buyer clients out there the very next day.<\/p>\n

A day later, the Realtor emailed SPHP.\u00a0 Her clients loved the view, but the house was dated.\u00a0 They didn’t want to remodel it.\u00a0 No offer.<\/p>\n

Well, it was true.\u00a0 It was an old lady’s house.\u00a0 It did need remodeling.\u00a0 Grandma was too old to want to do it.<\/p>\n

4-1-20<\/em> – The Year of Perfect Vision, and everything was crazy!\u00a0 Should have been the perfect time of year to put a home on the market, yet this year maybe it was the worst?\u00a0 No one really knew what was going to happen. \u00a0 Most of the nation, but not South Dakota, was enduring mandatory shutdowns and stay at home orders.\u00a0 As the economy got worse, the Federal Reserve was spending trillions of dollars.\u00a0 Congress and the President, too.\u00a0 More people dying, millions more losing their jobs every week.\u00a0 The stock market, which had just collapsed, was now soaring.<\/p>\n

Grandma wanted the house sold, not just “for sale”.\u00a0 Cut the price 10% and get rid of it.\u00a0 April 1st, but she wasn’t fooling.\u00a0 It was cold, windy and tiny snowflakes were flying when Lupe and SPHP met with Realtor Walt out at Grandma’s house this afternoon.\u00a0 First sign of the approaching blizzard.\u00a0 The paperwork blizzard!\u00a0 Walt soon left, and Lupe insisted on going to the cul-de-sac.<\/p>\n

4-10-20<\/em> – Grandma’s house had been entered into MLS on April 6th at the new lower price.\u00a0 Tons of showings!\u00a0 Feedback all the same.\u00a0 Everyone loved the canyon view, big yard, size of the home, and 3 car garage.\u00a0 Everyone hated the old cabinets, countertops and fixtures.\u00a0 “Potential”, but too much work.\u00a0 No interest.<\/p>\n

Until today.\u00a0 An offer!\u00a0 Even lower than Grandma’s new price, but a cash offer.\u00a0 Grandma said yes.\u00a0 4 days on the market!\u00a0 That was fast!<\/p>\n

Of course, the sale still wasn’t done.\u00a0 Another paperwork blizzard.\u00a0 Inspections, more repairs, title insurance, a deed, questions about this and that, but gradually it was all falling into place.\u00a0 Still trips out to Grandma’s house and the cul-de-sac, but fewer and fewer of them.\u00a0 SPHP started working on The (Mostly) True Adventures of Lupe again.\u00a0 The American Dingo finally had new posts coming out for the first time many weeks.<\/p>\n

4-29-20<\/em> – The closing date had been moved up to May 1st.\u00a0 Lupe and SPHP returned to mow the lawn.<\/p>\n

4-30-20<\/em> – Almost the end!\u00a0 SPHP had to read a gauge on the propane tank.\u00a0 Of course, that meant another trip to Grandma’s house and the cul-de-sac.<\/p>\n

5-1-20<\/em> – Last chance to see it all again!\u00a0 In a few more hours, Grandma’s house would belong to someone else.\u00a0 Lupe arrived very early in the morning.\u00a0 No work or projects to do this time.\u00a0 For the last time, Loop and SPHP walked up to the cul-de-sac.\u00a0 Hard to believe this was it.<\/p>\n

5:20 AM! We’ve never been to the cul-de-sac this early before!<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

Today a special adventure was waiting for Lupe back at Grandma’s house.\u00a0 Over the years, she had occasionally ventured down into Spring Creek Canyon all the way to Spring Creek.\u00a0 Not every year, maybe half a dozen times in all.<\/p>\n

Going down to Spring Creek and back wasn’t a long adventure.\u00a0 An hour would be enough.<\/p>\n

Usually Spring Creek is underground in this part of the canyon.\u00a0 It only flows for a few weeks in the spring in wet years.\u00a0 Some years it never surfaces at all.\u00a0 However, Lupe found it running this morning.\u00a0 In fact, Spring Creek was looking great!<\/p>\n

Back at Grandma’s, it was once around the yard, before a final inside tour.\u00a0 Lupe went briefly to every room.\u00a0 Everything was clean.\u00a0 It all still looked as good as SPHP had been able to make it.<\/p>\n

Lupe had spent so many happy times here!\u00a0 Yet Grandma had moved on.\u00a0 Everything was gone.\u00a0 The moment had come.\u00a0 It was time for Lupe and SPHP to go, too.<\/p>\n

By noon, Grandma didn’t own a house any more.\u00a0 SPHP stopped by the title company to pick up her check from the sale.\u00a0 Grandma was allowed out of the senior living center to go deposit the check at the bank, so Lupe got to see her for a little while.<\/p>\n

Already the merry month of May!\u00a0 SPHP was well.\u00a0 Grandma’s house was sold.\u00a0 The world was still going nuts, and Lupe hadn’t been on a Black Hills Expedition in more than 5 months now.\u00a0 Yet SPHP said she probably wouldn’t get to resume her adventures until sometime in June.\u00a0 With all that had happened, SPHP was way too far behind on writing up her 2019 adventures!<\/p>\n

5-24-20<\/em> – The grass was green!\u00a0 The air was sweet!\u00a0 New leaves on the trees.\u00a0 The world was as beautiful as ever.\u00a0 Summer was coming soon, but day after radiant day had drifted by.\u00a0 Six months now since the American Dingo’s last Black Hills Expedition.\u00a0 Grandma’s house and the cul-de-sac were but a memory.\u00a0 Lupe’s sole consolation was a daily trip to the park.<\/p>\n

No actual geyser at the park this year, because this stream isn’t overflowing. Still looking good, though.<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

Adventures in watching paint dry really hadn’t cut it.\u00a0 Lupe was missing her old life of adventure, yet the Carolina Dog’s problems were nothing compared to the rest of the world.<\/p>\n

Disease!\u00a0 Death!\u00a0 Shutdowns!\u00a0 Poverty!\u00a0 Murder!\u00a0 Protests!\u00a0 Riots!\u00a0 Arson!\u00a0 Looting!<\/p>\n

2020 – The Year of Perfect Vision, and no one had seen what was coming.<\/p>\n
