Days 21 & 22 of Lupe’s 2019 Dingo Vacation to the Yukon & Alaska!<\/em><\/p>\n

8-25-19, 8:32 AM, 37\u00baF, Denali State Park<\/em> – Cloudy this morning, but it didn’t look like rain.\u00a0 Still some blue sky around.\u00a0 However, a certain bleary-eyed American Dingo wasn’t looking terribly ambitious.\u00a0 After a fabulous long day up on K’esugi Ridge yesterday, nothing too strenuous had much appeal.<\/p>\n

During breakfast, SPHP mulled over various options.\u00a0 Actually, a day of rest did sound good.<\/p>\n

Mind just taking it easy today, Looper?<\/em><\/p>\n

I already am, SPHP.<\/em><\/p>\n

So I see.\u00a0 We could scout out the Reindeer Hills<\/span><\/a> (5,102 ft.)<\/span><\/strong>, if you like, and get into position to take ’em on tomorrow.\u00a0 That wouldn’t be too hard.
\n<\/em><\/p>\n

Not the Reindeer Hills again!\u00a0 How many times have we been there and never gotten anywhere with them?\u00a0 Last year we’d barely left the Denali Highway when I fell into a deep water hole!\u00a0 Remember?\u00a0 That bog was a death trap!\u00a0 And you never did find a way across the creek.<\/em><\/p>\n

Yeah, sorry about that.\u00a0 Promise we won’t try that spot again, but maybe there is better access somewhere else.\u00a0 No harm in looking is there?<\/em><\/p>\n

How about you look, while I snooze?<\/em><\/p>\n

Oh, come on!\u00a0 You can snooze on the way over there.\u00a0 Deal?<\/em><\/p>\n

I suppose.\u00a0 Deal, but I’m not climbing them today!<\/em><\/p>\n

Despite the clouds and some haziness, the drive NE on the George Parks Highway was gorgeous.\u00a0 Approaching Cantwell, the Reindeer Hills came into view.<\/p>\n

By mid-afternoon, SPHP’s scouting was done.\u00a0 Two possible access points, both near the W end.\u00a0 Nothing to do now, but relax and wait.\u00a0 Loop spent the rest of the day hanging out near the E Fork of the Jack River and a small lake.<\/p>\n

8-26-19, 6:13 AM, 39\u00baF, E fork of the Jack River, Denali Hwy<\/em> – Gah!\u00a0 So much for the Reindeer Hills.\u00a0 Not happening.\u00a0 A dreary day, completely overcast with a very low ceiling.\u00a0 The Reindeer Hills were cloaked in fog.<\/p>\n

Might as well head E.\u00a0 The G6 bumped and rattled 20 to 30 mph along the Denali Highway.\u00a0 The Nenana River was beautiful, but SPHP didn’t stop.\u00a0 Peak 5464<\/span><\/strong> looked climbable, and was almost out of the clouds, but didn’t seem worth the effort on a day like today.<\/p>\n

The sky soon darkened, and it began to rain.\u00a0 However, the rain didn’t last.\u00a0 Loop was getting restless.\u00a0 SPHP began stopping at various points of interest to let the Carolina Dog sniff about for a few minutes.<\/p>\n

Drifting clouds and fog lent an aura of mystery at every turn.\u00a0 Misty mountains lay beyond dark evergreens and brilliantly colored bushes.<\/p>\n

The relaxing drive was beautiful, but hours passed and there didn’t seem to be anything to do.\u00a0 At least, not until a stop overlooking a lake.\u00a0 Off in the distance, Looper could see a long, low ridge with a notable rounded high point at one end.<\/p>\n

The weather remained gloomy, yet Crazy Notch Ridge<\/span><\/a> (4,233 ft.)<\/span><\/strong> wasn’t lost in the clouds.\u00a0 With the summit only a little over 2 miles N of the Denali Highway, what looked like an easy trek exploring the big ridge seemed a perfect choice.<\/p>\n

A few miles farther, the Denali Highway curved E.\u00a0 Crazy Notch was less than a mile away.\u00a0 A dirt road on the N side of the highway provided a spot to park the G6 hidden a few hundred feet back among the bushes.<\/p>\n

8-26-19, 12:08 PM, 47\u00baF, Denali Highway MP 46.5<\/em> – With the G6 safely stashed, the American Dingo was ready for action!\u00a0 Going N on the dirt road, she quickly passed a pond on the L (NW).\u00a0 The road soon split.\u00a0 Lupe went R (E) heading straight for Crazy Notch Ridge.<\/p>\n

It quickly became apparent getting to Crazy Notch Ridge was going to be a little more complicated than SPHP expected.\u00a0 Almost immediately, the dirt road curved back to the SE.\u00a0 Lupe couldn’t head directly for the high ground.\u00a0 A slough occupied the bottom of a small valley between here and the ridge.<\/p>\n

Eh, no problem!\u00a0 The dirt road looped all the way back to the Denali Highway.\u00a0 Lupe followed it 0.33 mile E to the W end of Crazy Notch.\u00a0 No slough here, only a 75 foot high slope to deal with.\u00a0 The Carolina Dog left the Denali Highway at MP 46, beginning her ascent.<\/p>\n

The whole slope was thickly grown with bushes nearly as tall as SPHP.\u00a0 While Lupe had little difficulty sneaking through this jungle, forcing a way higher against all the branches pushing back down the rather steep slope made progress dreadfully slow for SPHP.\u00a0 Not that far to the top, though, so SPHP persevered.<\/p>\n

Must have rained here earlier.\u00a0 The bushes were all wet.\u00a0 Loop was soon soaked, and so was SPHP.\u00a0 Fun, fun!\u00a0 2\/3 of the way up the slope, SPHP suddenly noticed the air was humming.\u00a0 Horrors!\u00a0 Hornets!\u00a0 The air was now full of them, and they sounded none too pleased at the disturbance created as SPHP had pushed right past their nest.\u00a0 Lupe stood smiling right below it!<\/p>\n

Looper, hurry!\u00a0 Keep going!\u00a0 Up, up!\u00a0 Don’t stop!<\/em><\/p>\n

SPHP was allergic.\u00a0 No damage done.\u00a0 Lupe also escaped unstung.\u00a0 Lucky!<\/p>\n

Reaching the top of the 75 foot slope, the news otherwise wasn’t good.\u00a0 Loop hadn’t reached the broad gentle part of the ridge yet, not even close.\u00a0 Ahead rose a hilly area, all densely covered with bushes.\u00a0 SPHP had envisioned Loop trotting easily across a gently sloping tundra plain all the way to the summit, not an unremitting bushwhack!<\/p>\n

Fortunately, animal trails led through the bushes making it possible for SPHP to push through.\u00a0 Each time a trail ended, Lupe sniffed out another one close by.\u00a0 After making some progress in this manner, Loop came to an open spot, a bit of tundra and rocky ground.<\/p>\n

Encouraging!\u00a0 This was more like it!\u00a0 The open ground proved to be a rare respite, but animal trails continued to provide assistance.\u00a0 Pushing on, Lupe soon reached a high spot.\u00a0 Ahead was a ravine, about 30 feet deep.\u00a0 No choice, but to cross it.\u00a0 Going down was easy, but getting back up the opposite side was a chore.\u00a0 Again animal trails helped.<\/p>\n

Two more high spots, two more ravines to cross.\u00a0 Each time it got a bit easier.\u00a0 These ravines weren’t as deep as the first one, and as Lupe slowly gained elevation, the bushes were getting smaller.<\/p>\n

After climbing out of the third ravine, Lupe had finally made it to the far S end of the long gentle slope leading N to the summit.\u00a0 This region was still blanketed with bushes tall and thick enough to make it exhausting for SPHP to fight through them for any distance.<\/p>\n

Happily, countless animal trails criss-crossed the broad plain.\u00a0 As Lupe roamed N, the bushes continued to shrink.\u00a0 The plain was somewhat higher toward the opposite E side.\u00a0 Despite angling NNE, Loop never quite seemed to reach the highest ground.<\/p>\n

The terrain became increasingly tussocky as the bushes shriveled away.\u00a0 No rocky ground at all.\u00a0 SPHP had the impression that if Alaska hadn’t experienced a drought this summer, this whole region might be a giant bog.\u00a0 Loopster was one lucky Dingo to be trying this in 2019!<\/p>\n

A mere 2 miles, yet the trek seemed endless.\u00a0 No worries.\u00a0 The farther Lupe went, the easier and more fun it became.\u00a0 At last she was closing in on the big rise at the N end of the mountain.\u00a0 At the base of the steeper slope, she came upon a dried-up pool.\u00a0 The only significant feature of the rounded hill ahead was a rocky point jutting out about 2\/3 of the way up.<\/p>\n

After crossing the dried-up pool, Lupe started up the slope.\u00a0 Only a few hundred feet to the top.\u00a0 Staying W(L) of the rocky point seemed to be the way to go.\u00a0 By now there were few bushes, and Loop was on firm, slightly rocky ground of the sort SPHP had been hoping for all this time.<\/p>\n

As Lupe drew near the rocky point, Crazy Notch Ridge<\/span><\/a> (4,233 ft.)<\/span><\/strong> really rolled out the red carpet for the American Dingo!<\/p>\n

Naturally, Lupe visited the rocky point.\u00a0 The top turned out to be a flat, brightly decorated shelf.\u00a0 Looper went all the way out to the end, which was a bit grassy.\u00a0 Off to the S she had a grand view of the enormous lower part of Crazy Notch Ridge she had just traveled to get here.<\/p>\n

The summit wasn’t much farther.\u00a0 Another 125 feet higher?\u00a0 Something like that.\u00a0 The slope was an easy climb.\u00a0 The weather was improving, with blue sky overhead as Lupe reached the top.<\/p>\n

The top of Crazy Notch Ridge turned out to be a rounded ridgeline 1,000 feet long.\u00a0 The highest portion of this summit ridge was a narrower 200 foot long section toward the W end.\u00a0 A disorganized heap of stones sat at the very top.\u00a0 Just E of the stones, a 20″ tall threaded metal rod stuck up out of the ground.<\/p>\n

Although Crazy Notch Ridge wasn’t at all rugged, its open summit and isolated position provided commanding views in all directions.\u00a0 Despite considerable haziness, what Lupe could see was impressive!<\/p>\n

Break time!\u00a0 For a long while, Lupe and SPHP sat resting together at the true summit.\u00a0 Off to the NW was a great valley flanked by mountains.\u00a0 This valley split going around both sides of Crazy Notch Ridge to join the surrounding lowlands.\u00a0 The West Fork of the Maclaren River meandered E out of the valley.<\/p>\n

The sunshine was intermittent, clouds regularly sailed overhead.\u00a0 At all times the distant views were hazy.\u00a0 Only part of it was due to humidity.\u00a0 Diffused smoke drifted this way from forest fires raging far to the W.<\/p>\n

Loopster felt like exploring of the lower E end of the summit ridge.\u00a0 The topo map<\/strong><\/span><\/a> showed a pond between the E end and a subpeak to the NE.\u00a0 Why not go see if that pond was really there?<\/p>\n

A pond actually was nestled in the saddle leading to the NE subpeak.\u00a0 Off to the NNE, a line of snow-capped peaks could be dimly seen beyond the Maclaren River.\u00a0 Two large peaks were snowier than the others.\u00a0 Less spectacular, but more clearly seen, Whistle Ridge<\/span><\/a> (4,850 ft.)<\/span><\/strong> was off to the SE.<\/p>\n

Evidently the smoke from out W really had caught up with Lupe again.\u00a0 The views should have been awesome, but weren’t all they might have been.\u00a0 Returning to the true summit, Lupe ventured out to the far W end of the ridge where the smoke was even worse.<\/p>\n

Despite it all, Crazy Notch Ridge<\/span><\/a> (4,233 ft.)<\/span><\/strong> was a terrific vantage point.\u00a0 Strolling back to the true summit, Lupe and SPHP lingered a long time.<\/p>\n

A few miles to the WNW, beyond the lowlands, Lupe could see a large tableland.\u00a0 That whole region was about as high as Crazy Notch Ridge.\u00a0 Beyond the plateau were the Clearwater Mountains.\u00a0 Looked like a fun place to explore!<\/p>\n

Wistfully, the American Dingo sat thinking about it, but the world is a big place.\u00a0 Even if there was a way to cross the wet lowlands, that tableland was well beyond the limits of adventure today.<\/p>\n

Guess we can’t do it all, can we, SPHP? …. No, truth is, most things are beyond us Loop. Always will be<\/em>. Photo looks WNW.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

Two hours gone at the summit of Crazy Notch Ridge!\u00a0 The great beyond still beckoned.\u00a0 Yet no matter what one does, there are always limits.\u00a0 It was time to turn back.<\/p>\n

A glorious evening!\u00a0 Once past the dried-up pond, Lupe stayed farther E than during her ascent, sticking with the highest ground she could find.\u00a0 Wild and free, she roamed the vast golden tussocky tundra stretching away to the S having a grand time.<\/p>\n

Still quite a march, but the happy return along animal trails seemed to go much faster than the ascent.\u00a0 Upon reaching the bushes again, Lupe discovered another dried up pond.\u00a0 This one was perfectly round.<\/p>\n

At the S end of Crazy Notch Ridge, it turned out the Carolina Dog was far enough E to avoid having to cross all 3 of the drainages she’d wandered through during her ascent.\u00a0 Loop wound up in a much deeper ravine choked with bushes.<\/p>\n

Suddenly a strange grunting noise was heard.\u00a0 What the heck was that?\u00a0 Lupe became intensely excited.\u00a0 A young caribou!<\/p>\n

The caribou ran off.\u00a0 Disappointed, Lupe continued down the ravine.\u00a0 Huge bushes towered over SPHP.\u00a0 The ravine was becoming quite steep when the view opened up.<\/p>\n

Not much farther now.\u00a0 The Denali Highway was in sight down in Crazy Notch.\u00a0 The American Dingo reached it 0.5 mile E of MP 46.\u00a0 Less than a mile back to the G6!\u00a0 Trotting easily along the quiet Denali Highway, Loopster headed W into the golden sun.\u00a0 (End 7:29 PM)<\/em><\/p>\n
