{"id":26563,"date":"2020-04-20T08:10:19","date_gmt":"2020-04-20T14:10:19","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/adventuresoflupe.com\/?p=26563"},"modified":"2020-06-08T20:27:25","modified_gmt":"2020-06-09T02:27:25","slug":"syncline-mountain-talkeetna-range-alaska-8-22-19","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/adventuresoflupe.com\/?p=26563","title":{"rendered":"Syncline Mountain, Talkeetna Range, Alaska (8-22-19)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>Day 18 of Lupe&#8217;s 2019 Dingo Vacation to the Yukon &amp; Alaska!<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>8:38 AM, 36\u00baF, 1.5 miles NW of Glenn Highway MP 123.3<\/em> &#8211; Belanger Pass!\u00a0 Almost immediately after making the L turn, SPHP was forced to park the G6 in a convenient slot among the bushes on the L side of the road.\u00a0 A stream was just ahead.\u00a0 Wide, but only inches deep, the G6 could have forded the stream easily enough, but only a little beyond it a huge mud puddle covered the entire road.\u00a0 Better scout that out before getting too rambunctious!<\/p>\n<p>Lupe bounded out.\u00a0 Not a cloud in the sky!\u00a0 Should have been a perfect day for <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/peakbagger.com\/peak.aspx?pid=421\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Syncline Mountain<\/span><\/a> <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">(5,471 ft.)<\/span><\/strong>, but it wasn&#8217;t.<\/p>\n<p><em>Kind of smoky, isn&#8217;t it, SPHP?<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Yup.\u00a0 Must be some big forest fires somewhere.\u00a0 With this haze as evenly spread out as it is, though, I suspect the fires aren&#8217;t anywhere around here.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>We&#8217;re still going then, aren&#8217;t we?<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Yeah.\u00a0 Might as well give it a shot, provided the smoke doesn&#8217;t get too much worse.\u00a0 Disappointing, but it&#8217;s the best chance we&#8217;ve had.\u00a0 This far from home, it&#8217;s not like we&#8217;re going to get a zillion opportunities.<\/em><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_26376\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-26376\" style=\"width: 660px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-26376\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/IMG_4800-1024x768.jpg?resize=660%2C495\" alt=\"\" width=\"660\" height=\"495\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/IMG_4800.jpg?resize=1024%2C768&amp;ssl=1 1024w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/IMG_4800.jpg?resize=300%2C225&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/IMG_4800.jpg?resize=768%2C576&amp;ssl=1 768w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/IMG_4800.jpg?w=1651&amp;ssl=1 1651w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/IMG_4800.jpg?w=1320&amp;ssl=1 1320w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 660px) 100vw, 660px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-26376\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">At the turn for Belanger Pass. Photo looks NNW.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Despite the smoke, it was a grand day.\u00a0 Hard to believe it, but Loop was on her way! \u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/peakbagger.com\/peak.aspx?pid=421\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Syncline Mountain<\/span><\/a><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"> (5,471 ft.)<\/span><\/strong> had been on Lupe&#8217;s &#8220;to do&#8221; list ever since she&#8217;d first seen it from <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/peakbagger.com\/peak.aspx?pid=18904\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Gunsight Mountain<\/span><\/a> <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">(6,441 ft.)<\/span><\/strong> where she&#8217;d met her friend Australian adventurer <a href=\"https:\/\/lukasadventures.wordpress.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Luke Hall<\/span><\/strong><\/a> in 2016.<strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Gunsight Mountain was a higher, far more impressive peak, but during the Carolina Dog&#8217;s descent 3 years ago, SPHP couldn&#8217;t help noticing an enormous ridge off to the N.\u00a0 Wouldn&#8217;t it be fun to roam that giant ridge?\u00a0 Looper would love exploring it!\u00a0 A map at the Gunsight Mountain trailhead had shown that the huge ridge was called Syncline Mountain.\u00a0 A network of trails went all around it, but not on top.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_26427\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-26427\" style=\"width: 660px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-26427\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/IMG_4853-1024x768.jpg?resize=660%2C495\" alt=\"\" width=\"660\" height=\"495\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/IMG_4853.jpg?resize=1024%2C768&amp;ssl=1 1024w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/IMG_4853.jpg?resize=300%2C225&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/IMG_4853.jpg?resize=768%2C576&amp;ssl=1 768w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/IMG_4853.jpg?w=1651&amp;ssl=1 1651w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/IMG_4853.jpg?w=1320&amp;ssl=1 1320w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 660px) 100vw, 660px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-26427\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Syncline Mountain area trail map posted at the Gunsight Mountain trailhead (MP 118.5 of the Glenn Highway).<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Later, further investigation (<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/peakbagger.com\/peak.aspx?pid=421\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">topo map<\/span><\/a><\/strong>) had shown the easiest access to Syncline Mountain was probably from the E end up at Belanger Pass.\u00a0 The true summit was way over at the opposite W end of the giant ridge at the &#8220;Fred&#8221; survey benchmark, a good 6 or 7 miles from the pass.\u00a0 No doubt about it, Lupe was in for a long day with a fair amount of up and down, even once up on the mountain.<\/p>\n<p>This day had been a long time coming.\u00a0 Since climbing Gunsight, Lupe had been by Syncline Mountain 5 or 6 times, but conditions had always been miserable &#8211;
