The next stop offered a choice of adventures.\u00a0 A mile or two before reaching Chicken, SPHP parked the G6 at the <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.explorenorth.com\/library\/history\/bl-dredgecowden.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Mosquito Fork Dredge<\/span><\/a><\/strong> trailhead.\u00a0 A nice-looking trail disappeared into the forest on its way to an overlook where an old gold mining dredge would be visible down on the Mosquito Fork of the Forty Mile River.<\/p>\n<p>Truth is, peakbagging Carolina Dogs aren&#8217;t much into mining or dredges, and while forks are sometimes useful, SPHP isn&#8217;t keen on mosquitoes.\u00a0 Right across the Taylor Highway was a better option.\u00a0 Lupe could climb <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/peakbagger.com\/peak.aspx?pid=-82945\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Lost Chicken Hill<\/span><\/a> <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">(2,150 ft.)<\/span><\/strong>!<\/p>\n<p><em>Oh, let&#8217;s do that instead, SPHP!\u00a0 I&#8217;ll find that lost chicken!\u00a0 It&#8217;ll be wings and drumsticks for dinner tonight!<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Heavily forested Lost Chicken Hill wasn&#8217;t much of a climb, a mere 80 feet of elevation gain or so from the trailhead, if that.\u00a0 Nevertheless, Lupe was enthused by the thought of hunting down that lost chicken.\u00a0 If she could also claim a trivial Alaskan peakbagging success as well, so much the better!\u00a0 After crossing the highway, she passed through a big opening carved into the S end of Lost Chicken Hill and headed up into the forest.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_26144\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-26144\" style=\"width: 660px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-26144\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/IMG_4666-1024x768.jpg?resize=660%2C495\" alt=\"\" width=\"660\" height=\"495\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/IMG_4666-scaled.jpg?resize=1024%2C768&amp;ssl=1 1024w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/IMG_4666-scaled.jpg?resize=300%2C225&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/IMG_4666-scaled.jpg?resize=768%2C576&amp;ssl=1 768w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/IMG_4666-scaled.jpg?resize=1536%2C1152&amp;ssl=1 1536w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/IMG_4666-scaled.jpg?w=1651&amp;ssl=1 1651w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/IMG_4666-scaled.jpg?w=1320&amp;ssl=1 1320w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 660px) 100vw, 660px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-26144\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Starting for <strong>Lost Chicken Hill<\/strong> right across the Taylor Highway from the Mosquito Fork Dredge trailhead. the forest floor thick with soft, spongy moss.\u00a0 Gently rounded Lost Chicken Hill was an easy climb.\u00a0 Before long, Lupe arrived at a large flat region that had to be the summit.\u00a0 The American Dingo prowled this way and that, but the lost chicken did not appear, and no single spot stood out as the absolute highest point.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_26146\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-26146\" style=\"width: 660px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large everywhere!\u00a0 She found bright red berries, she came to a variety of mushrooms and fungi, but the famous lost chicken was nowhere to be seen.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_26148\" this chicken been missing, anyway, SPHP?<br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Not exactly sure, Looper.\u00a0 Probably since the gold rush days.\u00a0 1880&#8217;s?\u00a0 1890&#8217;s?\u00a0 Something like that.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>So the chicken was here 130 years ago?\u00a0 No wonder I can&#8217;t pick up a scent!<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Yeah, I&#8217;m really not that surprised, to tell you the truth.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The Carolina Dog pondered the situation.<\/p>\n<p><em>The chicken can&#8217;t be too spry now, SPHP, but might have wandered quite a long way in 130 years.\u00a0 The trail is stone cold.\u00a0 Even if we find this chicken, it&#8217;s apt to be scrawny and tough.\u00a0 We should have gotten here sooner.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>No doubt you&#8217;re right, Loop.\u00a0 Don&#8217;t worry about it.\u00a0 My bad.\u00a0 I shouldn&#8217;t have overslept.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>With no chickens and no views, there didn&#8217;t seem to be much point in lingering up on Lost Chicken Hill.\u00a0 What the heck, Lupe had plenty of Alpo and Taste of the Wild to eat, anyway!\u00a0 Might as well return to the G6, and carry on.\u00a0 Even so, the Carolina Dog didn&#8217;t give up entirely.\u00a0 The whole way back she kept sniffing and exploring, just in case.<\/p>\n<p>The only chickens she found, though, were the big metal ones stationed in the village of Chicken, when SPHP stopped for a
