Vacation to the Yukon &amp; Alaska!<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><strong>8-12-19<\/strong>, Takhini Hot Pools NW of Whitehorse<\/em> &#8211; Oh, the deliciously warm, wet luxury of it all!\u00a0 For a whole hour SPHP soaked in the heat of the <a href=\"http:\/\/takhinihotpools.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Takhini Hot Pools<\/span><\/strong><\/a>.\u00a0 So nice to be warm and clean again!\u00a0 Abandoned in the G6, Loopster was missing out.\u00a0 The American Dingo wouldn&#8217;t have liked it anyway.\u00a0 She was no fan of hot or deep water.<\/p>\n<p>Another hour would have been nice, but Lupe couldn&#8217;t be left for too long.\u00a0 Feeling great, SPHP returned to an enthusiastic greeting at the G6.\u00a0 A trip back into Whitehorse for supplies, and the Carolina Dog was on her way again.<\/p>\n<p>A beautiful cruise N on the N Klondike Hwy was in store this afternoon.\u00a0 No complaints from any feisty, bored Dingoes!\u00a0 Yesterday&#8217;s big Mount Lorne adventure ensured that.\u00a0 If anything, Looper was looking even more relaxed than SPHP.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_25699\" href=\"http:\/\/adventuresoflupe.com\/?p=20470\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Five Finger Rapids<\/span><\/strong><\/a> on the Yukon River was coming up.\u00a0 A year ago, Lupe had met Fred and Teresa Reitsma there.\u00a0 They had just sold the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/The-Sausage-Factory-1434463376815307\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>Sausage Factory<\/strong><\/span><\/a> in Smithers, British Columbia to a long time employee, and had been on their first big around today, but Lupe still had a great time squirrel watching along the 2 km trail down to the rapids.\u00a0 At the end of the trail, Lupe paused for a look at the mighty Yukon River.<\/p>\n<figure gold rush days, Five Finger Rapids had been a navigation hazard for steamboats bound for Whitehorse.\u00a0 Underwater rock formations between a cluster of midstream islands created the rapids.\u00a0 The turbulent flow had long ago been tamed by dynamiting these obstructions to open up navigable channels.<\/p>\n<p>Although the rapids no longer existed, it was still fun to see the famous Yukon River at this historic point.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_25702\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-25702\" style=\"width: 660px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" id=\"caption-attachment-25703\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Near the downstream end.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Five Finger Rapids was a nice break, but the road trip resumed.\u00a0 At Stewart Crossing, SPHP left the N Klondike Hwy turning R (E) onto the Silver Trail <em>(Hwy No. 11)<\/em>.\u00a0 The Silver Trail started out following the Stewart River valley upstream, but the big river was almost never in sight.<\/p>\n<p>Lupe had traveled this part of the Silver Trail in 2018.\u00a0 The highway eventually left the Stewart River near the town of Mayo.\u00a0 Last year, SPHP had not bothered to take the short side road into Mayo, but perhaps it was worth checking out?<\/p>\n<p>Mayo didn&#8217;t amount to much.\u00a0 The sleepy community showed little sign of life.\u00a0 The highlight was a grassy park with a gazebo overlooking the Stewart River.\u00a0 A plaque told a little about the history of the area.\u00a0 Once SPHP was done looking at it, Lupe went down a 30 foot embankment to get a drink out of the Stewart River.\u00a0 The river was wide, but as nearly dead calm as the rest of Mayo.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_25704\" Photo looks N.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The second item of interest was the discovery of a Minto Bridge trail.\u00a0 According to a plaque, this trail made a 1 km loop, half of it following the Mayo River, the rest in the boreal forest.\u00a0 Nothing too spectacular, but Lupe still had time enough to do that yet this evening!\u00a0 By now the Carolina Dog was rested up and ready for that followed the Mayo River.\u00a0 Although the river was close by, the forest was dense enough so Lupe only got glimpses of it.\u00a0 The good news was that a squirrel or two were living in the <\/em>The drive up Signpost road had been interesting to say the least.\u00a0 The road started out fairly steep, but in decent shape.\u00a0 After gaining a tremendous amount of elevation, it wasn&#8217;t as steep, but became rougher as it began switchbacking higher.\u00a0 As the G6 crept along, Lupe stared out at increasingly impressive views of local desolation and distant silvery mountains.<\/p>\n<p>Gradually swinging around the W end of higher ground to the NE, Signpost road crossed a huge plateau of tundra, ultimately curving NE to end at a turnaround loop on flat terrain.\u00a0 A rocky ridge superimposed on the flatter ground was off to the SW.\u00a0 Near the start of the loop there was a kiosk with a poster about the history of the Signpost.\u00a0 Beyond a stone monument, the Signpost itself stood off to the N near the edge of the mountain.<\/p>\n<p>Lupe left the G6 for a look around.\u00a0 Barely 50\u00baF with a chilly 15 mph SW breeze.\u00a0 The amorphous gray sky seemed practically within grasp.\u00a0 Loop sniffed about while SPHP took a quick look at the poster.<\/p>\n<p><em>&#8220;The original Signpost was erected by United Keno Hill Mines in 1956 when the company hosted a group of visiting scientists during the International Geophysical Year.\u00a0 The signs point to the cities represented by the delegates.\u00a0 It was replaced in 1989 with the current steel signpost.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_25729\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-25729\" style=\"width: 660px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-25729\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/IMG_4359-768x1024.jpg?resize=660%2C880\" alt=\"\" width=\"660\" height=\"880\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/IMG_4359-scaled.jpg?resize=768%2C1024&amp;ssl=1 768w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/IMG_4359-scaled.jpg?resize=225%2C300&amp;ssl=1 225w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/IMG_4359-scaled.jpg?resize=1152%2C1536&amp;ssl=1 1152w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/IMG_4359-scaled.jpg?resize=1536%2C2048&amp;ssl=1 1536w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/IMG_4359-scaled.jpg?w=1650&amp;ssl=1 1650w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/IMG_4359-scaled.jpg?w=1320&amp;ssl=1 1320w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 660px) 100vw, 660px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-25729\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The Signpost poster near Keno Summit.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>And with that, moments after arriving, fog swept over Keno Hill.\u00a0 Lupe and SPHP retreated into the G6.<\/p>\n<p>Summer sausage and crackers!\u00a0 The American Dingo munched happily away, ignoring the fog streaming by outside.\u00a0 Late in the afternoon, but the plan for the day was finally set.\u00a0 If the weather improved, Looper would try to get to Monument Hill a mile to the E, the true summit of the whole <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/peakbagger.com\/peak.aspx?pid=-82936\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Keno Hill<\/span><\/a> <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">(6,065 ft.)<\/span><\/strong> ridge.<\/p>\n<p>This loop the G6 was parked at was the official end of Signpost Road, but the road actually extended farther E.\u00a0 All the way to Monument Hill?\u00a0 Who knew?\u00a0 Lupe was already at 5,500 feet, so that might be easily be the case.\u00a0 Without being able to see anything at all, though, even along the way, it seemed pointless to try.<\/p>\n<p>Full of summer sausage and crackers, a contented Carolina Dog took to snoozing.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>8-13-19<\/strong>, 6:30 PM, the Signpost turnaround loop near Keno Summit &#8211; <\/em>No change, until just recently.\u00a0 Out of the fog now, but the cloud deck sailing overhead out of the W was only 100 to 150 feet higher.\u00a0 A dark gray edge in that direction never seemed to get here.\u00a0 On the SW horizon, a silvery ghost haunted the narrow band of visibility below the clouds &#8211; Mount Haldane!<\/p>\n<p>A bored, well-fed, well-rested American Dingo yawned and stretched.<\/p>\n<p><em>So, are we ever going to do anything here, SPHP?<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Sure!\u00a0 We can go check out the stone monument and the Signpost, if you like.\u00a0 At least we have some limited views now.\u00a0 I doubt Monument Hill is going to escape the fog this evening, but we still might want to see how far we can get.\u00a0 That road to the E looks intriguing.\u00a0 Maybe it goes all the way to the summit?\u00a0 Might be now or never, depending on what tomorrow brings.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Outside the G6, the wind had died down considerably.\u00a0 Didn&#8217;t seem as cold.\u00a0 The Monument Hill vote quickly swung in favor of &#8220;now&#8221; the G6.\u00a0 20 minutes later, a dense fog swept over the mountain.\u00a0 Rain lashed the tundra.\u00a0 The W wind blew in gusts.\u00a0 Light was fading.<\/p>\n<p>11 km beyond the end of the Silver Trail!\u00a0 185 miles from the Arctic Circle!\u00a0 With night coming on at 5,500 feet at the end of Signpost road, Keno Hill felt incredibly desolate and remote.<\/p>\n<figure
