{"id":24596,"date":"2019-11-21T08:10:02","date_gmt":"2019-11-21T15:10:02","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/adventuresoflupe.com\/?p=24596"},"modified":"2020-01-13T12:16:48","modified_gmt":"2020-01-13T19:16:48","slug":"powder-river-pass-peak-10215-peak-10493-bighorn-mountains-wyoming-6-29-19","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/adventuresoflupe.com\/?p=24596","title":{"rendered":"Powder River Pass &#8211; Peak 10215 &#038; Peak 10493, Bighorn Mountains, Wyoming (6-29-19)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>Day 4 of Lupe&#8217;s 1st 2019 Dingo Vacation to the Bighorn Mountains of Wyoming!<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>6:20 AM, USFS Road No. 29<\/em> &#8211; Frost on the G6!\u00a0 Chilliest night of this Dingo Vacation yet.\u00a0 The sun was already up and climbing higher, though.\u00a0 Partly just to warm things up a bit, SPHP drove back to <strong>Munkres Pass <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">(9,447 ft.)<\/span><\/strong>.\u00a0 Lupe was bright-eyed and alert, anxiously watching for deer or moose along the way.<\/p>\n<p>The Carolina Dog had no success with that, but a squirrel or two at Munkres Pass provided ample entertainment.\u00a0 SPHP heated up breakfast &#8211; beef and barley soup.\u00a0 After eating, not feeling terribly energetic, SPHP piddled around getting the backpack ready.\u00a0 With squirrels to watch, Loop was in no rush to do anything else, anyway.<\/p>\n<p>Even so, by mid-morning, Lupe was at <strong>Powder River Pass <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">(9,677 ft.)<\/span><\/strong>.\u00a0 The pass was a busy place!\u00a0 Many vehicles stopped briefly at the huge paved pullout along Hwy 16 here.\u00a0 People got out to stretch their legs, and see the sights from the highest point the road reached on the journey over the magnificent Bighorn Mountains.<\/p>\n<p>Powder River Pass was just a starting point for Loop, though.\u00a0 With any luck, she was going to climb a couple of mountains N of Hwy 16 today.\u00a0 And, yes, fortune was smiling upon the American Dingo!\u00a0 Blue skies, a nice breeze, and perfect temperature.<\/p>\n<p>Despite all those advantages, there was a problem.\u00a0 Feeling drained after 3 straight days of peakbagging, SPHP was overcome by drowsiness and promptly drifted off to sleep.\u00a0 Lupe must have felt the same way.\u00a0 At least she didn&#8217;t object.\u00a0 She conked out, too, snoring rhythmically on her pink blanket atop pillows and gear.<\/p>\n<p><em>11:40 AM, 63\u00b0F, Powder River Pass<\/em> &#8211; Oh, yeah!\u00a0 So much better!\u00a0 A couple of hours lost, but no harm done.\u00a0 <strong><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Peak<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/peakbagger.com\/peak.aspx?pid=-72791\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">10215<\/span><\/a><\/strong> and <strong><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Peak<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/peakbagger.com\/peak.aspx?pid=-72792\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">10493<\/span><\/a><\/strong> weren&#8217;t that far from Powder River Pass, or all that much higher.\u00a0 Still time enough to visit both.\u00a0 Consciousness and energy restored, Lupe and SPHP crossed Hwy 16.\u00a0 The Carolina Dog started up the grassy slope at the base of the crag N of the road.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_24554\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-24554\" style=\"width: 660px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-24554\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/IMG_3688-768x1024.jpg?resize=660%2C880\" alt=\"\" width=\"660\" height=\"880\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/IMG_3688-scaled.jpg?resize=768%2C1024&amp;ssl=1 768w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/IMG_3688-scaled.jpg?resize=225%2C300&amp;ssl=1 225w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/IMG_3688-scaled.jpg?resize=1152%2C1536&amp;ssl=1 1152w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/IMG_3688-scaled.jpg?resize=1536%2C2048&amp;ssl=1 1536w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/IMG_3688-scaled.jpg?w=1650&amp;ssl=1 1650w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/IMG_3688-scaled.jpg?w=1320&amp;ssl=1 1320w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 660px) 100vw, 660px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-24554\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><strong>S end of Peak 10215<\/strong> from <strong>Powder River Pass<\/strong>. a torn piece of a map with the names Buck &amp; D&#8217;Lynn Cowdin from Kaycee, WY 9-3-18; a Coors Lite key chain; 2 Miller Lite bottle openers; a badly disintegrating scrap of paper with the names Steven Topalin, Thomas Szczygiel, &amp; Photo looks NW.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The top of the ridge was all rock.\u00a0 The ridgeline was so rough that Lupe often had to travel a bit below the top along one side or the other, usually toward the NE.\u00a0 She passed within a couple of feet of the first cairn, and eventually made it over to the more distant high point.<\/p>\n<p>Surprisingly, just SE of this high point was a roomy patch of fairly level ground.
