Photo looks NW.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Two miles beyond Lower Doyle Creek campground (a turn not taken), SPHP turned R (W) on USFS Road No. 506.\u00a0 This road wasn&#8217;t great, but still passable for the G6.\u00a0 After bumping along for 1.5 miles, a junction was reached just E of some private property.\u00a0 Beyond a wood railing fence an old cabin sat in a meadow next to Doyle Creek.<\/p>\n<p>According to the <a href=\"https:\/\/peakbagger.com\/peak.aspx?pid=66774\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>topo map<\/strong><\/span><\/a> a road leading NW past the cabin was right where USFS Road No. 508 ought to be.\u00a0 Lupe had been intending to go this way, but there was no sign.\u00a0 Was that road public or private now?\u00a0 A sign along No. 506 did indicate there was a public easement for 0.3 mile across private property S of the cabin.<\/p>\n<p>SW wasn&#8217;t really the right direction, but SPHP stayed on No. 506, driving through the private property on the easement, and crossing Doyle Creek in the process.\u00a0 Beyond the W boundary of the private land, the road turned S, directly away from Hazelton Peak.\u00a0 Clearly no sense in driving any farther!\u00a0 SPHP parked the G6.\u00a0 Lupe could start for Hazelton Peak from here.\u00a0 <em>(10:16 AM, 63\u00baF)<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Setting off N through the forest, the intention was to avoid the private property, but Lupe wound up on it.\u00a0 She quickly came upon a dirt road that led past a pond with 2 docks.\u00a0 A little farther on was another road.\u00a0 SPHP surmised this was likely the same one that had gone NW past the old cabin.\u00a0 About this time, a much newer, nicer cabin was glimpsed off to the W.\u00a0 Lupe did not go near it.\u00a0 Instead, she simply crossed the road and Doyle Creek again, continuing all the way N to a fence.\u00a0 Once beyond the fence, she was back on USFS land.<\/p>\n<p>Definitely would have been better to have started from E of the old cabin and avoided the private property by following the fence line, but that didn&#8217;t matter now.\u00a0 Lupe roamed N through a gently sloping open forest, happy and completely oblivious to the private property issue she had already put behind her.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_24270\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-24270\" style=\"width: 660px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-24270\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/IMG_3555-1024x768.jpg?resize=660%2C495\" alt=\"\" width=\"660\" height=\"495\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/IMG_3555.jpg?resize=1024%2C768&amp;ssl=1 1024w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/IMG_3555.jpg?resize=300%2C225&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/IMG_3555.jpg?resize=768%2C576&amp;ssl=1 768w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/IMG_3555.jpg?w=1651&amp;ssl=1 1651w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/IMG_3555.jpg?w=1320&amp;ssl=1 1320w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 660px) 100vw, 660px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-24270\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">In the open forest N of the private property.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>After gaining a little elevation, Lupe came to a clearing.\u00a0 The rugged S end of Hazelton Peak was now visible ahead.\u00a0 Having seen the ragged main ridge from Hazelton Road, climbing this end of the mountain would almost certainly be a waste of effort.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_24271\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-24271\" style=\"width: 660px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-24271\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/IMG_3556-e1573074551358-768x1024.jpg?resize=660%2C880\" alt=\"\" width=\"660\" height=\"880\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/IMG_3556-e1573074551358.jpg?resize=768%2C1024&amp;ssl=1 768w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/IMG_3556-e1573074551358.jpg?resize=225%2C300&amp;ssl=1 225w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/IMG_3556-e1573074551358.jpg?w=1650&amp;ssl=1 1650w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/IMG_3556-e1573074551358.jpg?w=1320&amp;ssl=1 1320w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 660px) 100vw, 660px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-24271\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Approaching the rugged S end of <strong>Hazelton Peak<\/strong>. Photo looks N.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The map showed this stream was a tiny tributary lying well E of the main course of Doyle Creek.\u00a0 It meandered down open meadows from the N.\u00a0 Lupe was just where she wanted to be!\u00a0 The plan was to follow this stream up a long valley to a saddle at 9,520+ ft.<\/p>\n<p>The meadows near the stream were damp, sometimes boggy.\u00a0 Staying E of the stream, Lupe traveled N on slightly higher ground in the forest.\u00a0 She crossed a series of rivulets trickling down hillsides seeping water.\u00a0 After going some distance in this manner, the meadows and damp areas ended, and the tributary of Doyle Creek seemed to have vanished.<\/p>\n<p>Following animal trails, Lupe explored a mature forest of tall pines.\u00a0 The forest floor was bare except for pine needles.\u00a0 Although the American Dingo was now gaining elevation at an increasing rate, the forest hid all but her immediate surroundings.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_24274\" though she had gone a long way, but she did not come to the 9,520+ ft saddle or any viewpoints.\u00a0 She finally arrived at another little trickle of a stream coming down from Hazelton Peak, the first one she&#8217;d come across in quite a while.<\/p>\n<p>Loop would inevitably reach the saddle, if she continued up the valley, but SPHP was getting impatient.\u00a0 How much farther was it?\u00a0 Had she missed it somehow?\u00a0 That didn&#8217;t seem possible.\u00a0 Where did this little stream originate?\u00a0 Out of curiosity, SPHP led Lupe E following the trickling stream higher.\u00a0 It led to a dam of white rocks.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_24275\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-24275\" style=\"width: 660px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img Photo looks NW.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>It was still a long way back, but the rest was easy.\u00a0 The big green field was a saddle at 9,520+ ft., the same elevation as another saddle more than 0.5 mile SW.\u00a0 That other saddle was the one Lupe would have reached on the way up, if SPHP hadn&#8217;t become impatient.<\/p>\n<p>Traveling SW through the forest, being careful not to stray too far from the W slopes of Hazelton Peak, Lupe eventually did reach the 9,520+ ft. saddle she had been trying for earlier in the day.\u00a0 She crossed a meadow there, then descended into the valley of the tributary of Doyle Creek.<\/p>\n<p>Back in the forest again, light was already beginning to fade even though the sun was still up.\u00a0 Only a little sunlight filtered through the trees.\u00a0 Lupe and SPHP hastened on for what seemed like a long way.\u00a0 It wasn&#8217;t until the Carolina Dog came upon the &#8220;dam&#8221; of white rocks again that SPHP really knew where she was.<\/p>\n<p>That confidence didn&#8217;t last.\u00a0 The trackless forest was all too much the same.\u00a0 Nothing looked familiar.\u00a0 Lupe came to no other landmarks, at least nothing SPHP recognized.\u00a0 Believing she might be too far W, SPHP eventually turned SE.\u00a0 Soon after climbing over a hilly area, Loop finally reached a road.<\/p>\n<p><em>Know where we are now, SPHP?<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Yes, lucky Dingo!\u00a0 Completely by accident, but we couldn&#8217;t have planned it better if we&#8217;d tried.\u00a0 I thought we were too far W, but that wasn&#8217;t true.\u00a0 This is USFS Road No. 506.\u00a0 We&#8217;re E of the old cabin.\u00a0 We&#8217;ll have to go by it on the way back to the G6.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Oh, so we managed to avoid the private property then!<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>True dat.\u00a0 We&#8217;ll still have to take the public road easement back through it, but that&#8217;s not an issue.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>All&#8217;s well that ends well, SPHP!<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Also true, and the evening did end well with a peaceful mile long trek back along the road.\u00a0 <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/peakbagger.com\/peak.aspx?pid=66774\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Hazelton Peak<\/span><\/a> <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">(10,264 ft.)<\/span><\/strong> had been a great day!\u00a0
