{"id":21696,"date":"2019-05-23T08:10:47","date_gmt":"2019-05-23T14:10:47","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/adventuresoflupe.com\/?p=21696"},"modified":"2019-05-27T10:26:49","modified_gmt":"2019-05-27T16:26:49","slug":"doing-domes-the-top-of-the-world-highway-from-dawson-city-to-the-alaska-border-yukon-territory-canada-8-24-18","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/adventuresoflupe.com\/?p=21696","title":{"rendered":"Doing Domes &#8211; the Top of the World Highway from Dawson City to the Alaska Border, Yukon Territory, Canada (8-24-18)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>Day 21 of Lupe&#8217;s 2018 Dingo Vacation to the Yukon, Northwest Territories &amp; Alaska!<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>7:20 AM, 50\u00b0F, Midnight Dome near Dawson City<\/em> &#8211; A warm night!\u00a0 Kind of nice.\u00a0 Rained the whole time.\u00a0 Outside the G6, it was still coming down.\u00a0 Mist and fog.\u00a0 So no big rush to do anything.\u00a0 SPHP caught up the trip journal while Lupe dozed or watched raindrops on their sudden dashes down the windshield.\u00a0 Not too scintillating.<\/p>\n<p><em>9:21 AM, 45\u00b0F<\/em> &#8211; No change in the weather, but the American Dingo was about to get underway!\u00a0 A day of peakbagging Domes along the Top of the World Highway was in store.\u00a0 Lupe kicked things off with a super easy one.\u00a0 Since she had spent the night on <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/peakbagger.com\/peak.aspx?pid=33797\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Midnight Dome<\/span><\/a> <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">(2,887 ft.)<\/span><\/strong> not far from the summit, a second quick ascent was in order.<\/p>\n<p>Lupe had already seen the lovely views of the Yukon River and Dawson City from Midnight Dome yesterday evening.\u00a0 No special reason to make another ascent except for its own sake.\u00a0 She certainly wasn&#8217;t going to see anything this morning.\u00a0 On the other paw, the summit was only a trivial 20 feet higher than the viewpoint along the loop road, and the Carolina Dog was already here, so why not?<\/p>\n<p>Two minutes after escaping the G6, Lupe was again standing on the huge, rustic wooden bench at the top of Midnight Dome.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_21653\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-21653\" style=\"width: 660px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/IMG_1197.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-21653\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/IMG_1197-1024x768.jpg?resize=660%2C495\" alt=\"\" width=\"660\" height=\"495\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/IMG_1197.jpg?resize=1024%2C768&amp;ssl=1 1024w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/IMG_1197.jpg?resize=300%2C225&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/IMG_1197.jpg?resize=768%2C576&amp;ssl=1 768w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/IMG_1197.jpg?w=1651&amp;ssl=1 1651w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/IMG_1197.jpg?w=1320&amp;ssl=1 1320w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 660px) 100vw, 660px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-21653\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><em>The views were better yesterday when there were some! Can we go now? Once across the Yukon River, Lupe and SPHP set out on the Top of the World Highway (Hwy 9) to look for the road to Clinton and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/peakbagger.com\/peak.aspx?pid=-72101\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Cassiar Dome<\/span><\/a> <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">(4,450 ft.)<\/span><\/strong>.\u00a0 Hwy 9 climbed steadily out of the river valley.\u00a0 For several miles, the road was paved.\u00a0 Even before it turned to gravel, Lupe was back in fog again.\u00a0 Rain continued without let up.<\/p>\n<p>A discouraging start, but after 40 km, occasional breaks appeared in the clouds.\u00a0 Lupe could sometimes see nearby ridges, and even enjoyed brief moments of sunshine.\u00a0 This more hopeful weather held for the next 15 km, before conditions deteriorated again.\u00a0 Only a few km farther, about 59 km from Dawson City, the road to Clinton appeared as a R (N) turn.<\/p>\n<p>SPHP hadn&#8217;t noticed any signs for Clinton along the Top of the World Highway, but a white sign 200 feet N of the junction mentioned Clinton Creek, so this had to be the right road.\u00a0 The topo map showed that 6 km <em>(4 miles)<\/em> N of this intersection, Clinton Road goes over a saddle that might make a decent starting point for an ascent of Cassiar Dome.<\/p>\n<p>However, the weather was lousy.\u00a0 No point in leaving the Top of the World Highway just yet.\u00a0 The American Dingo was going to have to wait for improvement.\u00a0 SPHP parked the G6 at large level area W of Clinton Road close to the intersection.\u00a0 Might as well wait here.<\/p>\n<p><em>11:47 AM, 43\u00b0F, km 59 of the Top of the World Highway<\/em> &#8211; After a quick romp in the rain and fog, it was time for lunch.\u00a0 Canned salmon and Ritz crackers!\u00a0 Lupe feasted on both.\u00a0 Nothing changed outside, so after lunch the Carolina Dog took a long nap.\u00a0 Not to be outdone, SPHP joined her.<\/p>\n<p><em>2:20 PM<\/em> &#8211; Still raining, but the sky is a bit brighter, and the fog isn&#8217;t as dense.\u00a0 To the N, some of Clinton Road is visible.\u00a0 The whole area it goes through looks heavily forested.\u00a0 If that is what the route to Cassiar Dome is going to be like, Lupe will get absolutely soaked before she&#8217;s 20 feet from the G6.<\/p>\n<p>However, off to the SW, a barren ridge is in sight.\u00a0 The map shows that <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/peakbagger.com\/peak.aspx?pid=-72100\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Swede Dome<\/span><\/a> <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">(4,150 ft.)<\/span><\/strong> isn&#8217;t too far beyond that ridge.\u00a0 Maybe Lupe ought to forget Cassiar Dome, and go check out Swede Dome instead?\u00a0 With only a little over 300 feet of elevation gain required, Swede Dome isn&#8217;t much of a climb, but considering the circumstances, that&#8217;s a good thing!\u00a0 The Top of the World Highway passes right along the N and W slopes, so it won&#8217;t be a long trek, either.<\/p>\n<p>Maybe Lupe can climb Swede Dome even in this weather?<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_21656\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-21656\" style=\"width: 660px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/IMG_1200.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-21656\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/IMG_1200-1024x768.jpg?resize=660%2C495\" alt=\"\" width=\"660\" height=\"495\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/IMG_1200.jpg?resize=1024%2C768&amp;ssl=1 1024w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/IMG_1200.jpg?resize=300%2C225&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/IMG_1200.jpg?resize=768%2C576&amp;ssl=1 768w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/IMG_1200.jpg?w=1651&amp;ssl=1 1651w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/IMG_1200.jpg?w=1320&amp;ssl=1 1320w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 660px) 100vw, 660px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-21656\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">On the Top of the World Highway en route to check out <strong>Swede Dome<\/strong> (Center). of the spacious flat region, nowhere near any edge.\u00a0 A big cairn sat at or very close to the actual high point.\u00a0 Nearby, an ancient battered washtub was attached to a post.\u00a0 Lupe got up The slope Lupe had come up is on the R. The G6 is in sight. Photo looks N.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><em>3:52 PM, 45\u00b0F<\/em> &#8211; Coming from the W, a green street sign for Clinton Road did appear along the Top of the World Highway prior to the turn.\u00a0 SPHP drove N on Clinton Road almost to the saddle SW of Cassiar Dome.\u00a0 Two side roads split off from the same point on the R (NE) side of Clinton Road shortly before reaching the pass.<\/p>\n<p>Most interesting!\u00a0 SPHP parked the G6.\u00a0 The map didn&#8217;t show these side roads.\u00a0 If either one could get Lupe closer to <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/peakbagger.com\/peak.aspx?pid=-72101\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Cassiar Dome<\/span><\/a> <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">(4,450 ft.)<\/span><\/strong>, that would be a huge help!\u00a0 The sunshine had disappeared, and it was raining again, but Lupe and SPHP got out for a look.<\/p>\n<p>The side road on the L went NW toward a big ridge.\u00a0 Whether the road was destined to go up onto the ridge, or around to the other side couldn&#8217;t be seen from here.\u00a0 The top of this ridge was actually the route that SPHP intended Lupe to take over to Cassiar Dome, provided it wasn&#8217;t forested.\u00a0 Didn&#8217;t look like it was, either, so that was great news!<\/p>\n<p>The side road to the R went NNE, more directly toward Cassiar Dome, but gradually losing elevation as it disappeared from view among tall bushes.\u00a0 Apparently it wasn&#8217;t headed for the top of anything.\u00a0 Between these two roads was a sign.\u00a0 Unfortunately, the sign gave no indication where either road went.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_21666\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-21666\" style=\"width: 660px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/IMG_1211.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-21666\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/IMG_1211-1024x768.jpg?resize=660%2C495\" alt=\"\" width=\"660\" height=\"495\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/IMG_1211.jpg?resize=1024%2C768&amp;ssl=1 1024w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/IMG_1211.jpg?resize=300%2C225&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/IMG_1211.jpg?resize=768%2C576&amp;ssl=1 768w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/IMG_1211.jpg?w=1651&amp;ssl=1 1651w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/IMG_1211.jpg?w=1320&amp;ssl=1 1320w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 660px) 100vw, 660px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-21666\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">These side roads off Clinton Road are about 4 miles N of the Top of the World Highway. <strong>Cassiar Dome<\/strong> on the R. Photo looks NNE.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"attachment_21670\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-21670\" style=\"width: 660px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/IMG_1216-e1554949469925.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-21670\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/IMG_1216-e1554949469925-768x1024.jpg?resize=660%2C880\" alt=\"\" width=\"660\" height=\"880\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/IMG_1216-e1554949469925.jpg?resize=768%2C1024&amp;ssl=1 768w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/IMG_1216-e1554949469925.jpg?resize=225%2C300&amp;ssl=1 225w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/IMG_1216-e1554949469925.jpg?w=1650&amp;ssl=1 1650w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/IMG_1216-e1554949469925.jpg?w=1320&amp;ssl=1 1320w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 660px) 100vw, 660px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-21670\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Lupe had a blast running and sniffing, but wisely did not venture into the wilderness on either side of the road.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>After going perhaps a couple of miles, the road reached the lower SW slopes of <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/peakbagger.com\/peak.aspx?pid=-72101\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Cassiar Dome<\/span><\/a> <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">(4,450 ft.<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>)<\/strong><\/span>.\u00a0 The most direct route to the summit would have been to leave the road right away and start climbing.\u00a0 However, the mountainside was steep here, and thickly covered with wet bushes taller than SPHP.<\/p>\n<p>Lupe wouldn&#8217;t have to climb terribly far to get up above the bushes, but such a feat looked like a struggle.\u00a0 The Carolina Dog was already sopping wet from vegetation on the road.\u00a0 SPHP was only wet to mid-thigh, and wasn&#8217;t anxious to get totally soaked head to foot.<\/p>\n<p>Maybe the road would climb above the bushes, if Looper followed it far enough around the S end of Cassiar Dome?\u00a0 That might add quite a bit of distance, but following the road was fast.\u00a0 Wouldn&#8217;t take that long to at least give it a shot.<\/p>\n<p>So Lupe stuck with the road quite a bit farther as it curved SE around the N end of the Cassiar Creek valley.\u00a0 Loop got all the way to the S end of Cassiar Dome where the road turned E.\u00a0 She&#8217;d gained a little elevation, but not much.\u00a0 However, it was enough.\u00a0 The slope leading higher to the N wasn&#8217;t as steep as before, and only a narrow band of tall bushes had to be negotiated before Lupe would reach open ground.<\/p>\n<p>Leaving the road, the American Dingo charged N up the slope.\u00a0 Lupe was beyond the stand of tall bushes in practically no time.\u00a0 Only relatively low bushes, rocks, tundra, and scattered stunted conifers up here.\u00a0 Off to the SE, Clinton Road was in sight.\u00a0 SPHP could tell where the junction with the side roads was back where the G6 was parked.\u00a0 Lupe still hadn&#8217;t gained much elevation.\u00a0 200 feet max, maybe less.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_21671\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-21671\" style=\"width: 660px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/IMG_1217.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-21671\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/IMG_1217-1024x768.jpg?resize=660%2C495\" alt=\"\" width=\"660\" height=\"495\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/IMG_1217.jpg?resize=1024%2C768&amp;ssl=1 1024w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/IMG_1217.jpg?resize=300%2C225&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/IMG_1217.jpg?resize=768%2C576&amp;ssl=1 768w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/IMG_1217.jpg?w=1651&amp;ssl=1 1651w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/IMG_1217.jpg?w=1320&amp;ssl=1 1320w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 660px) 100vw, 660px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-21671\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Looking back to the SE shortly after leaving the side road.
