{"id":19608,"date":"2019-03-08T08:10:49","date_gmt":"2019-03-08T15:10:49","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/adventuresoflupe.com\/?p=19608"},"modified":"2019-03-16T19:55:30","modified_gmt":"2019-03-17T01:55:30","slug":"medicine-butte-the-uinta-county-wyoming-prominence-peak-7-23-18","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/adventuresoflupe.com\/?p=19608","title":{"rendered":"Medicine Butte, the Uinta County, Wyoming Prominence Peak (7-23-18)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>Day 11 of Lupe&#8217;s 2018 Dingo Vacation to the Bighorn Mountains &amp; Wind River Range of Wyoming!<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>6:00 AM &#8211;<\/em> Foggy.\u00a0 Too bad.\u00a0 No point in the American Dingo running down to Lower Green River Lake to gaze upon that fabulous view of iconic <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/peakbagger.com\/peak.aspx?pid=5341\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Squaretop Mountain<\/span><\/a> <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">(11,695 ft.)<\/span><\/strong> one last time.\u00a0 She wouldn&#8217;t see a thing.\u00a0 Twenty minutes, and SPHP had everything ready to go.\u00a0 Lupe was on her way out of the Wind River Range.<\/p>\n<p>What a difference a good night&#8217;s sleep made!\u00a0 Yesterday, worn out and weary, SPHP was convinced it was over.\u00a0 Lupe was going straight home.\u00a0 This Dingo Vacation was kaput!\u00a0 However, as the G6 bumped along the washboardy road from Green River Lakes back to civilization, the fog began to lift.\u00a0 The gorgeous Green River came into view.\u00a0 Skies turned blue.\u00a0 A surge of energy and sense of well-being!\u00a0 Optimism returned.<\/p>\n<p>Lupe still had a couple of peaks on her wish list in SW Wyoming.\u00a0 They were only a few hours drive away.\u00a0 Why not let Looper do them now?\u00a0 Neither involved exhausting backpacking trips like Bomber Mountain and Squaretop had been.\u00a0 Half a day each, if that.<\/p>\n<p>Riding with her head out the window, Lupe kept an eye out for gophers scampering over or alongside the dusty road.\u00a0 A frenzy of shrill Dingo barking erupted each time one came into view.\u00a0 Loop certainly seemed to have recovered.\u00a0 Clearly, she was all for extending her vacation!<\/p>\n<p>Long before the G6 made it back to pavement, a new decision.\u00a0 Home could wait.\u00a0 Lupe was heading for <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/peakbagger.com\/peak.aspx?pid=21267\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Medicine Butte<\/span><\/a> <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">(8,608 ft.)<\/span><\/strong>, the Uinta County, Wyoming High Point!<\/p>\n<p>In G6 air-conditioned comfort, Lupe spent the morning exploring new territory on a scenic drive S on Hwy 189 to I-80.\u00a0 Her only complaint was that this region was so deserty that even cows and horses were scarce.<\/p>\n<p>By early afternoon, SPHP was looking for the R turn off Hwy 89 N of Evanston onto County Road No. 108.\u00a0 Although there were no signs for No. 108 until after the turn was made, this was the road to the landfill, and there was a big sign for it.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_19605\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-19605\" style=\"width: 660px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/IMG_0167.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-19605\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/IMG_0167-1024x768.jpg?resize=660%2C495\" alt=\"\" width=\"660\" height=\"495\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/IMG_0167.jpg?resize=1024%2C768&amp;ssl=1 1024w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/IMG_0167.jpg?resize=300%2C225&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/IMG_0167.jpg?resize=768%2C576&amp;ssl=1 768w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/IMG_0167.jpg?w=1651&amp;ssl=1 1651w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/IMG_0167.jpg?w=1320&amp;ssl=1 1320w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 660px) 100vw, 660px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-19605\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><em>Heading N out of Evanston, Wyoming on Hwy 89 watch for this sign for the landfill on the R. Photo looks NE.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Fearing cactus and rattlesnakes, SPHP persuaded Lupe to stay on the road the whole way.\u00a0 Partway up, cows were grazing on what looked like slim pickings in a ravine N of the road.\u00a0 Loop was interested, but went on by without getting too rambunctious.<\/p>\n<p>No. 108 went E at first, working its way up onto a long ridgeline S of Medicine Butte.\u00a0 It then followed the ridge N.\u00a0 The hike along the open ridge was fairly scenic, amazingly so, for fans of sagebrush.<\/p>\n<p>Getting the full, genuine Medicine Butte experience early in the afternoon on a day in late July probably isn&#8217;t ordinarily the best plan of attack. \u00a0There wouldn&#8217;t have been any shade, but the luck of the Dingo held for a while.\u00a0 For some reason, this wasn&#8217;t a searing hot day, and a cloud formation hung around providing shade for close to half of the way to the summit.<\/p>\n<p>Nevertheless, the road hike was a little warm for wearing a fur coat, and Lupe hadn&#8217;t changed out of hers.\u00a0 As had been obvious from the start, she came to no water at all.\u00a0 Fortunately, SPHP had brought plenty.\u00a0 Periodic water stops were a necessity and helped lighten the pack.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_19590\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-19590\" style=\"width: 660px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/IMG_0150.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-19590\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/IMG_0150-1024x768.jpg?resize=660%2C495\" alt=\"\" width=\"660\" height=\"495\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/IMG_0150.jpg?resize=1024%2C768&amp;ssl=1 1024w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/IMG_0150.jpg?resize=300%2C225&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/IMG_0150.jpg?resize=768%2C576&amp;ssl=1 768w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/IMG_0150.jpg?w=1651&amp;ssl=1 1651w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/IMG_0150.jpg?w=1320&amp;ssl=1 1320w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 660px) 100vw, 660px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-19590\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Getting closer.
