{"id":17062,"date":"2018-11-20T08:10:52","date_gmt":"2018-11-20T15:10:52","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/adventuresoflupe.com\/?p=17062"},"modified":"2021-05-24T09:52:56","modified_gmt":"2021-05-24T15:52:56","slug":"black-hills-sd-expedition-no-238-centennial-trail-no-89-south-boxelder-creek-to-dalton-lake-10-28-18","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/adventuresoflupe.com\/?p=17062","title":{"rendered":"Black Hills, SD Expedition No. 238 &#8211; Centennial Trail No. 89: South Boxelder Creek to Dalton Lake (10-28-18)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>Start &#8211; 8:53 AM, 28\u00b0F, South Boxelder Creek trailhead of Centennial Trail No. 89 one mile W of Nemo, SD<br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Chilly.\u00a0 Frost on the grass.\u00a0 Lupe didn&#8217;t mind the brisk morning air at all.\u00a0 She was eager to begin a big day of adventures exploring another section of <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/gfp.sd.gov\/userdocs\/centennial-trail-brochure.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Centennial Trail No. 89<\/span><\/a><\/strong>.\u00a0 Dalton Lake, her objective, was 6.1 miles away.\u00a0 If the Carolina Dog got off to a good start, she ought to have time enough to visit a few minor Black Hills peaks along the way, too.<\/p>\n<p>As soon as SPHP was ready, Lupe set off on a level path heading NW by the main road.\u00a0 The path quickly led to a ford of Boxelder Creek.\u00a0 Since SPHP didn&#8217;t feel like fording Boxelder Creek on a cold morning, Lupe skipped the ford, too.\u00a0 Two bridges along the road got Lupe and SPHP over the creek twice in rapid succession.<\/p>\n<p>Beyond the second bridge was an ATV trail on the R.\u00a0 A sign indicated the ATV trail also served as part of Centennial Trail No. 89.\u00a0 Loop followed it into the forest.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_17013\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-17013\" style=\"width: 660px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/IMG_2462-e1541870116495.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-17013\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/IMG_2462-e1541870116495-768x1024.jpg?resize=660%2C880\" alt=\"\" width=\"660\" height=\"880\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/IMG_2462-e1541870116495.jpg?resize=768%2C1024&amp;ssl=1 768w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/IMG_2462-e1541870116495.jpg?resize=225%2C300&amp;ssl=1 225w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/IMG_2462-e1541870116495.jpg?w=1650&amp;ssl=1 1650w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/IMG_2462-e1541870116495.jpg?w=1320&amp;ssl=1 1320w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 660px) 100vw, 660px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-17013\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Lupe at the 2nd bridge over <strong>Boxelder Creek<\/strong>. Photo looks NNW.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Centennial Trail No. 89 headed NW.\u00a0 Loop was still gaining elevation, but very slowly.\u00a0 The forest in this area had been thinned by loggers.\u00a0 It was possible to see quite a bit of local territory between the remaining pines.\u00a0 This first part of the ridge was very broad and flat.\u00a0 The trail stayed far from the unseen edge.<\/p>\n<p>After going 0.33 mile NW, it appeared that Lupe might be nearing the W end of the ridge.\u00a0 Her first peakbagging objective, <strong><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Peak<\/span> <a href=\"http:\/\/peakbagger.com\/peak.aspx?pid=-73269\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">5237<\/span><\/a><\/strong> couldn&#8217;t be far from here, yet there didn&#8217;t seem to be any higher ground around.\u00a0 What could be seen of the terrain was almost perfectly level.\u00a0 SPHP called a brief halt to check the <a href=\"http:\/\/peakbagger.com\/peak.aspx?pid=-73269\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">topo map<\/span><\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_17023\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-17023\" style=\"width: 660px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/IMG_2474.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-17023\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/IMG_2474-1024x768.jpg?resize=660%2C495\" alt=\"\" width=\"660\" height=\"495\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/IMG_2474.jpg?resize=1024%2C768&amp;ssl=1 1024w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/IMG_2474.jpg?resize=300%2C225&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/IMG_2474.jpg?resize=768%2C576&amp;ssl=1 768w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/IMG_2474.jpg?w=1651&amp;ssl=1 1651w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/IMG_2474.jpg?w=1320&amp;ssl=1 1320w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 660px) 100vw, 660px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-17023\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Thinking Lupe couldn&#8217;t be too far from Peak 5237, yet seeing nothing but flat terrain, SPHP called a brief halt here to check the map.
