float: none; background-color: transparent; color: #333333; cursor: text; font-family: 'Noto Serif',serif; font-size: 17px; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: 400; letter-spacing: normal; Ponderosa pines dominated the hillsides. Photo looks NW.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Little changed for nearly 1.5 miles, but eventually the terrain began to steepen.\u00a0 Lupe was gaining elevation faster, but still at only a moderate pace.\u00a0 It became clear, however, that she would soon be coming to some sort of pass or high point.<\/p>\n<p>The aspens gave way to an open pine forest which had been thinned by logging operations.\u00a0 Centennial Trail No. 89 curved N.\u00a0 A dirt logging road brought Lupe to a saddle at the upper end of Gold Standard Gulch.\u00a0 Loop was already over halfway to the Rapid Creek trailhead.\u00a0 The saddle seemed like a good spot to take a short break.<\/p>\n<p>Lupe wasn&#8217;t hungry yet.\u00a0 She rested on pine needles atop little rock ledges W of the trail.\u00a0 SPHP had an apple.\u00a0 Not too surprisingly given the humid conditions, the sky had clouded up.\u00a0 Rain was a low probability according to the forecast, but seemed rather likely.<\/p>\n<p>If Lupe hadn&#8217;t stopped here, SPHP would have followed the logging road right on over the N side of the saddle.\u00a0 However, while Lupe relaxed, SPHP suddenly realized that there was a Centennial Trail No. 89 marker in the forest on the opposite side of the road.\u00a0 Evidently, the trail left the logging road at this pass.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_16026\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-16026\" style=\"width: 660px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/IMG_9054.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-16026\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/IMG_9054-1024x768.jpg?resize=660%2C495\" alt=\"\" width=\"660\" height=\"495\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/IMG_9054.jpg?resize=1024%2C768&amp;ssl=1 1024w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/IMG_9054.jpg?resize=300%2C225&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/IMG_9054.jpg?resize=768%2C576&amp;ssl=1 768w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/IMG_9054.jpg?w=1651&amp;ssl=1 1651w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/IMG_9054.jpg?w=1320&amp;ssl=1 1320w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 660px) 100vw, 660px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-16026\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">On the saddle at the upper end of <strong>Gold Standard Gulch<\/strong>. Photo looks N.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Rain fell for 20 minutes while Lupe and SPHP sheltered under the big pine tree.\u00a0 Little trout were leaping in the creek almost the whole time.\u00a0 They were fun to watch.\u00a0 Every now and then a larger trout made an especially big splash.<\/p>\n<p>The rain eased up.\u00a0 Onward!\u00a0 Lupe was now in the broad, flat Rapid Creek valley. And not even damp for long. Getting to the Rapid Creek trailhead was easy! Now what, SPHP? could have gone up onto the dam for a look at Pactola Reservoir, but being more of a peakbagging Dingo than a water Dingo, she had a different adventure in mind.\u00a0 She was going to climb nearby <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/peakbagger.com\/peak.aspx?pid=67362\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Perrin Mountain<\/span><\/a> <span style=\"color: trailhead, Centennial Trail No. 89 follows a gravel road NW up a valley as it begins the 5 mile journey to the next trailhead at Deer Creek.\u00a0 Lupe had no intention of going all the way to Deer Creek, but started up the valley.\u00a0 She immediately passed several nice cabins along the way.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_16041\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-16041\" style=\"width: one?<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Just beyond the last lovely cabin (pictured above), the valley and road both forked.\u00a0 Centennial Trail No. 89 continued up the L fork.\u00a0 Lupe took the road to the R.\u00a0 She followed it only a few hundred feet before turning E and climbing up onto a forested ridge.\u00a0 On the other side of this ridge was another valley.\u00a0 A big power line was down there.<\/p>\n<p>Lupe followed the ridge she was already on climbing steadily N.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_16042\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-16042\" style=\"width: 660px\"
