{"id":15858,"date":"2018-07-31T08:10:40","date_gmt":"2018-07-31T14:10:40","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/adventuresoflupe.com\/?p=15858"},"modified":"2020-09-24T13:47:56","modified_gmt":"2020-09-24T19:47:56","slug":"black-hills-sd-expedition-no-227-centennial-trail-no-89-spring-creek-to-twin-sisters-brush-creek-4-29-18","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/adventuresoflupe.com\/?p=15858","title":{"rendered":"Black Hills, SD Expedition No. 227 &#8211; Centennial Trail No. 89: Spring Creek to Twin Sisters &#038; Brush Creek (4-29-18)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>Start &#8211; 9:09 AM, 68\u00b0F, Spring Creek trailhead of Centennial Trail No. 89<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Half a dozen vehicles were at the Spring Creek trailhead off Sheridan Lake Road when Lupe arrived.\u00a0 Apparently the day was going to get off to a busy start, at least by the Carolina Dog&#8217;s standards.<\/p>\n<p>Lupe didn&#8217;t mind having an opportunity to meet a few people and sniff with other dogs.\u00a0 They were all likely to be concentrated around this first part of the trail along Spring Creek and Sheridan Lake.\u00a0 She would have plenty of solitude soon enough.\u00a0 Loop was eager to get going, and was underway as soon as SPHP was ready.<\/p>\n<p>The Spring Creek trailhead provides access to Flume Trail No. 50 and the 111 mile long <a href=\"https:\/\/gfp.sd.gov\/userdocs\/centennial-trail-brochure.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Centennial Trail No. 89<\/span><\/strong><\/a>.\u00a0 A spur trail follows Spring Creek upstream for a mile to Sheridan Lake where intersections with both of the main trails are found.\u00a0 Spring Creek is one of the larger streams in the Black Hills.\u00a0 The upstream trek is easy and beautiful.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_15860\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-15860\" style=\"width: 660px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/IMG_8941.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-15860\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/IMG_8941-1024x768.jpg?resize=660%2C495\" alt=\"\" width=\"660\" height=\"495\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/IMG_8941.jpg?resize=1024%2C768&amp;ssl=1 1024w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/IMG_8941.jpg?resize=300%2C225&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/IMG_8941.jpg?resize=768%2C576&amp;ssl=1 768w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/IMG_8941.jpg?w=1651&amp;ssl=1 1651w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/IMG_8941.jpg?w=1320&amp;ssl=1 1320w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 660px) 100vw, 660px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-15860\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">By <strong>Spring Creek<\/strong> only a short distance from the trailhead.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Several beam bridges cross Spring Creek on the way to Sheridan Lake.\u00a0 Before the first bridge a shortcut to the Dakota Point trailhead appears on the R.\u00a0 This seldom used side route is easy to miss, if not looking for it.\u00a0 The shortcut avoids the rest of Spring Creek and Sheridan Lake entirely.<\/p>\n<p>Lupe wasn&#8217;t looking for a shortcut now.\u00a0 Water in all its forms lends beauty and tranquility to almost any scene.\u00a0 The American Dingo had plenty of time to take the scenic route.\u00a0 She skipped the shortcut and went on to the first bridge.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_15861\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-15861\" style=\"width: 660px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/IMG_8942.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-15861\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/IMG_8942-1024x768.jpg?resize=660%2C495\" alt=\"\" width=\"660\" height=\"495\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/IMG_8942.jpg?resize=1024%2C768&amp;ssl=1 1024w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/IMG_8942.jpg?resize=300%2C225&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/IMG_8942.jpg?resize=768%2C576&amp;ssl=1 768w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/IMG_8942.jpg?w=1651&amp;ssl=1 1651w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/IMG_8942.jpg?w=1320&amp;ssl=1 1320w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 660px) 100vw, 660px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-15861\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">On the first beam bridge across <strong>Spring Creek<\/strong>. Lupe crossed it on her way to the Dakota Point trailhead.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>After crossing this last bridge over Spring Creek, Lupe had nearly a mile to go on Centennial Trail No. 89 to get to the Dakota Point trailhead.\u00a0 This entire route was on an old road through the forest.\u00a0 For the first 0.5 mile, the road went N up a valley until it reached a saddle.\u00a0 At the saddle, the road leveled out and turned W the rest of the way.<\/p>\n<p>No vehicles were at the Dakota Point trailhead.\u00a0 The road hike from Sheridan Lake to get here had been a bit dull.\u00a0 However, Lupe still had 6.8 miles to go to get to the Brush Creek trailhead, and the trail was about to get more interesting.\u00a0 The trail crossed a gravel road becoming a single track going downhill on the other side.<\/p>\n<p>Being on the single track was more fun.\u00a0 The trail went both up and down in a forest that had been thinned.\u00a0 Overall, Loopster lost a little net elevation by the time she reached Sheridan Lake Road 0.5 mile NW of the Dakota Point trailhead.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_15869\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-15869\" style=\"width: 660px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/IMG_8950-e1525213653169.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-15869\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/IMG_8950-e1525213653169-768x1024.jpg?resize=660%2C880\" alt=\"\" width=\"660\" height=\"880\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/IMG_8950-e1525213653169.jpg?resize=768%2C1024&amp;ssl=1 768w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/IMG_8950-e1525213653169.jpg?resize=225%2C300&amp;ssl=1 225w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/IMG_8950-e1525213653169.jpg?w=1650&amp;ssl=1 1650w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/IMG_8950-e1525213653169.jpg?w=1320&amp;ssl=1 1320w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 660px) 100vw, 660px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-15869\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">After passing the Dakota Point trailhead, Centennial Trail No. 89 becomes a single track for 0.5 mile on the way to Sheridan Lake Road. This short stretch was an exception. she&#8217;d started out at the Spring Creek trailhead this morning.\u00a0 This was far enough for one day, since she now had to go all the way back.\u00a0 When SPHP was done looking at the posted map and information about the trail, Lupe set off again.\u00a0 This time she was heading S.<\/p>\n<p>By the time Loopster made it back to the Bald Hills, the sunny day had vanished.\u00a0 A thunderstorm
