41 of Lupe&#8217;s 2017 Dingo Vacation to the Yukon &amp; Alaska!<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>9-7-17, 6:24 AM, 44\u00b0F, Tombstone Territorial Park, Yukon Territory<\/em> &#8211; Lupe and SPHP were awake dark and early.\u00a0 That&#8217;s right &#8211; <strong>dark<\/strong> and early.\u00a0 A week into September now, long days of the far north were ending.\u00a0 SPHP drove S on the Dempster Highway just to let the G6 warm things up a bit.\u00a0 Lupe stopped and had breakfast near the big sign at the entrance to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.env.gov.yk.ca\/camping-parks\/tombstonepark.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>Tombstone Territorial Park<\/strong><\/span><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Lupe&#8217;s Tombstone Park adventures were over.\u00a0 She&#8217;d had a grand time climbing Surfbird Mountain, Goldensides, and taking the Grizzly Ridge trail to Grizzly Lake.\u00a0 In fact, Loopster was done here in the Yukon.\u00a0 It was time to head home, but home was thousands of miles away.\u00a0 Most of the remaining days of her <a href=\"http:\/\/adventuresoflupe.com\/?page_id=15002\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>2017 Dingo Vacation to the Yukon &amp; Alaska<\/strong><\/span><\/a> would be spent on the road.\u00a0 Still, there would be stops at various sights, and a couple more big adventures along the way.<\/p>\n<p>After breakfast, Lupe rode shotgun watching for wildlife, while SPHP drove.\u00a0 The fall scenery was magnificent.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_15453\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-15453\" style=\"width: 660px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/IMG_7561.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-15453\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/IMG_7561-1024x768.jpg?resize=660%2C495\" alt=\"\" width=\"660\" height=\"495\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/IMG_7561.jpg?resize=1024%2C768&amp;ssl=1 1024w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/IMG_7561.jpg?resize=300%2C225&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/IMG_7561.jpg?resize=768%2C576&amp;ssl=1 768w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/IMG_7561.jpg?w=1651&amp;ssl=1 1651w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/IMG_7561.jpg?w=1320&amp;ssl=1 1320w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 660px) 100vw, 660px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-15453\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">A week into September, the fall scenery along the Dempster Highway was magnificent.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Upon reaching the North Klondike Highway, SPHP turned SE toward Whitehorse, the capitol city of Yukon Territory.\u00a0 Whitehorse, which was 550 kilometers from where the Carolina Dog started this morning, was as far as Lupe was going today.<\/p>\n<p>Lupe and SPHP had never been on the North Klondike Highway before.\u00a0 The road wound among countless hills, ridges, and valleys.\u00a0 There were mountains to be seen, but the highest ones were generally far away on some horizon.\u00a0 The highway crossed streams and rivers, and went past small lakes.\u00a0 Everywhere Loop looked, bright yellow forests of deciduous trees mixed with the dark greens of conifers.<\/p>\n<p>The long, peaceful drive was beautiful and relaxing &#8211; onward!\u00a0 Turned out Lupe hadn&#8217;t been far from the Bell 2 rest stop last night.\u00a0 Reached it within 15 minutes.\u00a0 Later stopped briefly at Bell 1 near the Bell Irving River where Lupe had spent a night on her <a href=\"http:\/\/adventuresoflupe.com\/?page_id=7320\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>2016 Dingo Vacation<\/strong><\/span><\/a>.\u00a0 In the dark, Bell 1 seemed just as mysterious now as it had back then.<\/p>\n<p><em>5:55 AM<\/em> &#8211; Still dark.\u00a0 Stopped to fuel up at Meziadin Junction.\u00a0 Raining!\u00a0 Not good.\u00a0 Hours to Smithers yet, though.\u00a0 Hopefully the rain will stop, so Lupe can climb <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/peakbagger.com\/peak.aspx?pid=-63001\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Harvey Mountain<\/span><\/a> <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">(6,083 ft)<\/span><\/strong>!<\/p>\n<p>From Meziadin Junction, it rained for a long way.\u00a0 Finally, though, the rain slackened to only intermittent showers.\u00a0 Still lots of clouds around, but even that situation improved enough so that by the time Lupe was approaching Smithers on Hwy 16, it was decided the American Dingo was at least going to take a shot at Harvey Mountain.<\/p>\n<p>After a quick stop at Safeway in Smithers, Lupe and SPHP continued SE on Hwy 16.\u00a0 On the way out of town, the highway crossed a bridge over the Bulkley River.\u00a0 SPHP watched for a N (L) turn onto Old Babine Lake Road.\u00a0 The turn soon materialized.\u00a0 Several miles of twists and turns later, Lupe was heading up Driftwood Canyon.<\/p>\n<p><em>10:10 AM, 47\u00b0F<\/em> &#8211; The Harvey Mountain trailhead has limited parking.\u00a0 No problem.\u00a0 There was plenty of room for the G6.\u00a0 No other vehicles around.\u00a0 As soon as Lupe got out of the G6, she ran across the road over to Driftwood Creek for a drink.\u00a0 The rushing creek was shaded in deep forest.\u00a0 Mossy rocks lined the creek banks, and formed mossy islands midstream.\u00a0 Pretty, but once Looper was hydrated, it was time to hit the trail for <a href=\"http:\/\/peakbagger.com\/peak.aspx?pid=-63001\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>Harvey Mountain<\/strong><\/span><\/a> jeep trail.\u00a0 Most of it was grassy, though a single track was beaten down to dirt a lot of the way.\u00a0 In some places, forest undergrowth had taken over all but the single track.<\/p>\n<figure easy enough, but that didn&#8217;t last long.\u00a0 Soon it was a steady uphill grind at a pretty fierce rate of climb.\u00a0 It stayed that way for a long way with only occasional short level stretches.\u00a0 SPHP was pausing frequently to catch breath.\u00a0 Lupe enjoyed showing off, trotting easily up and down the trail, while SPHP stood gasping between pushes onward and upward.<\/p>\n<p>The trail switchbacked up a steep mountainside though dense forest.\u00a0 Other than the challenging rate of ascent, everything about this was easy.\u00a0 No rocks, no roots, no cliffs, no rough terrain or obstacles.\u00a0 In many places the whole grassy roadbed was exposed, so the trail was plenty wide, too.\u00a0 This was simply a relentlessly steep road hike.<\/p>\n<p>Due to the dense forest, there were also no views.\u00a0 Even after gaining 2,000 feet of elevation, Lupe still hadn&#8217;t seen much of anything except trees.\u00a0 Oh, there were hints of views now and then, but not even a single decent opening appeared to allow some contemplation and appreciation of what was out there just beyond the forest.<\/p>\n<p>Lupe came to a large yellow metal gate.\u00a0 The gate was padlocked shut to prevent any possibility of vehicle traffic on the trail.\u00a0 After passing this gate, the situation finally started to show some signs of changing.\u00a0 The forest ahead was beginning to thin out.\u00a0 Before long, Loop was emerging from the trees.\u00a0 A huge sloping alpine meadow was ahead.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_15467\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-15467\" style=\"width: 660px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a Photo looks SE.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/peakbagger.com\/peak.aspx?pid=-63001\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>topo map<\/strong><\/span><\/a> showed a high point labeled &#8220;Mt. 2017.\u00a0 After another round of refreshment in Driftwood Creek, the Carolina Dog left the Babine Mountains returning to Highway 16.\u00a0 The rest of the day was spent on the road, traveling SE through gorgeous British Columbia toward Prince George.<\/p>\n<p>Loop didn&#8217;t make it all the way to Prince George.\u00a0 Toward evening she stopped for another adventure.\u00a0 This adventure wasn&#8217;t about climbing mountains, instead it was an adventure in beauty. \u00a0 In 2016, when Lupe had been on her way NW on Hwy 16, she had stopped at the prettiest city park, Steelhead Park, in the little town of Houston.<\/p>\n<p>Steelhead Park is right along the highway.\u00a0 It isn&#8217;t very large, but walkways lead across a beautifully manicured lawn past shady trees and carefully cultivated flower beds.\u00a0 There is even a fountain.\u00a0 A stop to stretch those legs and enjoy Steelhead Park again was a must!<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_15522\"
