Photo looks W.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The Grizzly Ridge trail must be popular.\u00a0 Two days ago, Lupe hadn&#8217;t seen anyone when she climbed Surfbird Mountain.\u00a0 Yesterday she&#8217;d met 4 or 5 people on the Goldensides trail.\u00a0 By the time Lupe was way up in the tundra on Grizzly Ridge, she had already met twice that many people.\u00a0 They were all on their way down, heading back to the trailhead.<\/p>\n<p>Ahead, the ridge leveled out and narrowed.\u00a0 The trail went right across the top of the narrow area.\u00a0 At the start of this section, Looper met a group of 4 hikers, who were also on their way back to the trailhead.\u00a0 The wind was blowing something fierce up here.\u00a0 Everyone was huddled on the N side of a minor rock outcropping taking a break from the wind.<\/p>\n<p>One of the hikers noticed that SPHP wasn&#8217;t using hiking poles.\u00a0 This guy immediately expressed concern.\u00a0 He practically screamed into the wind that it wasn&#8217;t safe to go any farther without poles.\u00a0 Even with them, the wind was blowing so hard, he had barely made it across.\u00a0 He held out his hiking poles at nearly a horizontal position to demonstrate how hard he had fought to avoid being blown entirely off the ridgeline.\u00a0 He screamed that the ridge ahead was very narrow, pronounced the wind a virtual hurricane, and screeched that it was SCARY!<\/p>\n<p>This was a somewhat unnerving display of no confidence to say the least.\u00a0 That the wind was strong there was no doubt, but was it really that bad?\u00a0 Would SPHP get blown into the canyon to the N?\u00a0 Would the Carolina Dog unwillingly take flight and sail helplessly into the abyss?<\/p>\n<p>Lupe sheltered behind the rock outcropping for 5 minutes with the rest of the hikers.\u00a0 When they started getting ready to continue their descent, Loopster and SPHP struck out along the windy ridgeline in the opposite direction.<\/p>\n<p>SPHP crouched.\u00a0 Loopster kept her head down.\u00a0 Forward!\u00a0 Despite the gale, the American Dingo did not take flight.\u00a0 SPHP managed to stagger onward.\u00a0 The ridgeline was narrow, but not as bad as that hiker would have had one believe.\u00a0 It wasn&#8217;t fun in this wind, but scary is relative to what one is accustomed to.\u00a0 SPHP didn&#8217;t think this was so bad.\u00a0 Looper hated the wind, but she wasn&#8217;t frightened, either.<\/p>\n<p>Beyond this narrow section, the wind started to ease up.\u00a0 The Grizzly Ridge trail gains more than 2,600 feet of elevation from the trailhead to its high point.\u00a0 The American Dingo had already gained the vast majority of that elevation.\u00a0 As the ridge continued higher, the trail stayed to the S below the ridgeline.<\/p>\n<p>As the wind continued to ease, Lupe caught glimpses of Grizzly Lake.\u00a0 Encouraging!\u00a0 The sky, however, was looking darker than before, and Grizzly Lake was still a long way off.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_15380\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-15380\" style=\"width: 660px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/IMG_7510.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-15380\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/IMG_7510-1024x768.jpg?resize=660%2C495\" alt=\"\" width=\"660\" height=\"495\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/IMG_7510.jpg?resize=1024%2C768&amp;ssl=1 1024w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/IMG_7510.jpg?resize=300%2C225&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/IMG_7510.jpg?resize=768%2C576&amp;ssl=1 768w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/IMG_7510.jpg?w=1651&amp;ssl=1 1651w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/IMG_7510.jpg?w=1320&amp;ssl=1 1320w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 660px) 100vw, 660px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-15380\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Beyond the narrowest section of the ridgeline, the wind began easing up. You sure we should be doing this?<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Within a couple of minutes, Grizzly Lake disappeared completely.\u00a0 A rain shower was working its way down the Grizzly Creek valley straight for Lupe&#8217;s position.\u00a0 It wouldn&#8217;t take long to get here.\u00a0 SPHP donned the rain poncho.\u00a0 There was room for the pack and Lupe to get up underneath it, too.\u00a0 On the E side of the big rock formation, Loopster sat on SPHP&#8217;s lap inside the rain poncho.<\/p>\n<p>The rain began immediately.\u00a0 Gray clouds scudded by 500 to 800 feet above, all but the closest mountains vanished, wisps of fog streamed by.\u00a0 Of course, the question was, how long was this going to last?\u00a0 If this was going to turn into an all day affair, which seemed entirely plausible, Lupe might as well beat a retreat to the G6 now.<\/p>\n<p>Loop and SPHP sat there waiting as rain poured down driven by the wind.\u00a0 No cloudburst, or anything like that, but steady, relentless.\u00a0 The rain poncho, aided by the rock formation, was working.\u00a0 The Carolina Dog stayed dry.<\/p>\n<p>For 30 minutes nothing changed.\u00a0 Rain fell everywhere, in every direction.\u00a0 Finally, it slackened.\u00a0 The sky looked lighter toward Grizzly Lake.\u00a0 The rain returned, however.\u00a0 Lupe and SPHP waited out another couple of brief showers over the next 15 minutes.\u00a0 When it was nearly over, Loopster hit the trail again.\u00a0 Onward!\u00a0 Puppy, ho!<\/p>\n<p>The trail now went up and down, still gaining net elevation slowly, as it wound along the upper S side of Grizzly Ridge.\u00a0 The ridge was much broader here than back at that windiest narrow section.\u00a0 The rain soon quit entirely, and, thankfully, the wind died down to a gentle breeze.\u00a0 The sky remained overcast, but not so darkly as before.<\/p>\n<p>The top of Grizzly Ridge was now often considerably higher than the trail.\u00a0 However, Loop did round corners a couple of times to find places where the ridgeline dipped down to the trail&#8217;s level.\u00a0 At these saddles, the Carolina Dog could see into the deep canyon to the N.\u00a0 A cluster of high mountains was visible off to the NW.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_15385\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-15385\" style=\"width: 660px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/IMG_7517.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-15385\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/IMG_7517-1024x768.jpg?resize=660%2C495\" alt=\"\" width=\"660\" height=\"495\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/IMG_7517.jpg?resize=1024%2C768&amp;ssl=1 1024w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/IMG_7517.jpg?resize=300%2C225&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/IMG_7517.jpg?resize=768%2C576&amp;ssl=1 768w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/IMG_7517.jpg?w=1651&amp;ssl=1 1651w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/IMG_7517.jpg?w=1320&amp;ssl=1 1320w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 660px) 100vw, 660px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-15385\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Looking back after rounding a corner. Photo looks WSW with help from the telephoto lens.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Although Lupe had met more than a dozen people on the way to Grizzly Lake, no one was on the trail on the way back.\u00a0 By the time she reached the forest again, it was pitch black.\u00a0 SPHP wore the headlamp set on red, and carried a flashlight.\u00a0 The forest was a short portion of the overall journey, but seemed to go on forever.\u00a0 Lupe was tired.\u00a0 SPHP was tired.\u00a0 It had been an incredible day, but both were ready for it to end.<\/p>\n<p><em>11:18 PM, 50\u00b0F at the Grizzly Ridge trailhead<\/em> &#8211;
