said Nebraska!\u00a0 Are we going to cousin Dusty&#8217;s house in Colorado, SPHP?\u00a0 You sure packed light this time.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>No, we aren&#8217;t going all the way to Colorado, Looper.\u00a0 We&#8217;re going back to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fs.usda.gov\/recarea\/nebraska\/recreation\/camping-cabins\/recarea\/?recid=10616&amp;actid=29\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>Toadstool Geologic Pa<\/strong><\/span><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>rk<\/strong><\/span><\/a> to explore part of the Hudson Meng Bison Trail.\u00a0 Remember when you took the <a href=\"http:\/\/adventuresoflupe.com\/?p=5360\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>Fossil Loop Trail<\/strong><\/span><\/a>\u00a0 a couple of\u00a0 years ago?\u00a0 That was in Toadstool Geologic Park.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Oh, yeah!\u00a0 That was awesome exploring the Nebraska badlands!\u00a0 Had to watch out for cactus, though.\u00a0 So we&#8217;re going back to take the Bison Trail now?\u00a0 Will we get to see the Hudson Meng Bison Kill?\u00a0 Oh, I hope so!\u00a0 Just think of it, SPHP, the bones of 600 bison, just laying there waiting to be gnawed on!\u00a0 Why, I will be the richest Dingo on earth with a treasure like that!<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>No, we&#8217;re not going all the way to Hudson Meng.\u00a0 Sorry.\u00a0 I don&#8217;t think it&#8217;s open this time of year.\u00a0 They wouldn&#8217;t let you chew on their bison bones, anyway.\u00a0 You wouldn&#8217;t like it if they did.\u00a0 Those bones are 10,000 year old fossils now.\u00a0 You&#8217;re a bit late getting to them.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Oh, too bad.\u00a0 So what are we gonna do then?<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>We&#8217;re going to take the Hudson Meng Bison Trail up the Big Cottonwood Creek drainage.\u00a0 When we&#8217;re out of the badlands, we&#8217;ll leave the trail and head S for Roundtop Peak.\u00a0 I&#8217;m hoping we&#8217;ll get to Pine Butte and Wright Peak, too.\u00a0 You will get to do a lot of exploring.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Oh, some peakbagging!\u00a0 Sounds like fun.\u00a0 Not as much fun as 600 bison bones, though.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Almost immediately after crossing the Nebraska state line, SPHP turned R on Toadstool Road.\u00a0 Toadstool Road was gravel.\u00a0 For a few miles there were spots where the road was mighty wet.\u00a0 The G6 went through huge mud puddles sending a slushy, muddy spray everywhere, but fortunately did not become stuck.\u00a0 The road then improved somewhat, up on higher, drier ground.<\/p>\n<p>12 miles from the N end of Toadstool Road, Lupe saw another sign for Toadstool Geologic Park.\u00a0 SPHP turned R (SW) onto a side road that went up over railroad tracks.\u00a0 Toadstool Geologic Park was only 1.5 miles from here, but SPHP stopped a little before Lupe got there.\u00a0 Her peakbagging objectives for the day were However, SPHP now mistakenly believed that the higher ridge on the L was Wright Peak. The only bad thing is, I still don&#8217;t see any bison.<\/em> Photo looks SW.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Looper and SPHP stayed up on Peak 4760 a little while.\u00a0 Not too long, though.\u00a0 The sun was getting low, and it was a long way back to the G6.\u00a0 There was a need for some speed on the return trip, so Lupe wouldn&#8217;t get lost down in the Big Cottonwood Creek canyon after dark on the way back to Toadstool Geologic Park.<\/p>\n<p>Since she was in a hurry, Lupe didn&#8217;t go back through the hills the way she had come.\u00a0 Instead, she took a grassy road <em>(USFS Road No. 944)<\/em> that led down a draw.
