Alaska!<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>7:00 AM<\/em> &#8211; Still foggy, but it was light out now.\u00a0 The fog didn&#8217;t seem as thick as it had been a few hours ago.\u00a0 Loopster was still snoozing after her big adventure going to <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/peakbagger.com\/peak.aspx?pid=-62974\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Ermine Hill<\/span><\/a> <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">(2,700 ft.)<\/span><\/strong> and beyond yesterday up on K&#8217;esugi Ridge in Denali State Park.\u00a0 SPHP worked on catching up the trip journal.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"caption-attachment-14507\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Loopster catches a few more winks on a foggy morning after yesterday&#8217;s adventure to Ermine Hill and beyond on K&#8217;esugi Ridge in Denali State Park.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>When Lupe woke up, SPHP suggested going back to the Ermine Hill trail registration station, which was only a short stroll away through the drippy forest.\u00a0 Lupe welcomed the opportunity to get out and sniff around.<\/p>\n<p>Yesterday, from higher up on Ermine Hill, Lupe had seen two people and a big brown dog down on the trail.\u00a0 They had been watching a black bear across a small lake, before ultimately turning and retreating back down the trail.\u00a0 Lupe had pressed on closer to where the bear was on her way to <strong><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Peak<\/span> <a href=\"http:\/\/peakbagger.com\/peak.aspx?pid=-62975\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">3700<\/span><\/a><\/strong>, but hadn&#8217;t ever seen it again.\u00a0 SPHP was curious whether the people had written any comments about the bear in the registry.<\/p>\n<p>The people <em>had<\/em> written some comments, surprising ones!\u00a0 Their dog&#8217;s name was Ollie.\u00a0 That wasn&#8217;t so surprising, but what they had written about the bear was.\u00a0 Ollie and his humans hadn&#8217;t seen <em>a<\/em> black bear, they&#8217;d seen 5 of them!\u00a0 A sow with 2 cubs, plus 2 more mature bears.\u00a0 No wonder they had retreated back down the trail!\u00a0 K&#8217;esugi Ridge had been crawling with bears!\u00a0 Despite roaming around up on K&#8217;esugi Ridge practically all day yesterday, Lupe and SPHP had only seen that one.<\/p>\n<p>Even though the fog was slowly thinning, by mid-morning it was fairly certain that Lupe wasn&#8217;t going to get to see <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/peakbagger.com\/peak.aspx?pid=271\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Denali<\/span><\/a> <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">(20,310 ft.)<\/span><\/strong> today.\u00a0 At the pace things were improving, the Alaska Range would never come into view.\u00a0 May as well move on.\u00a0 Lupe and SPHP left Denali State Park taking George Parks Highway No. 3 to Wasilla.<\/p>\n<p>By mid-afternoon, after a couple of stops and going through Wasilla, Lupe was nearing Palmer on Glenn Highway No. 1.\u00a0 It was a beautiful day here, 65\u00b0F and fairly sunny.\u00a0 Traffic was backed up for miles.\u00a0 People were thronging in to the Alaska State Fair.\u00a0 The fair wasn&#8217;t anything Lupe could go see, but another option existed.\u00a0 There was time enough left in the day to climb <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/peakbagger.com\/peak.aspx?pid=60991\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Hatch Benchmark<\/span><\/a> <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">(4,811 ft.)<\/span><\/strong> from Hatcher Pass.<\/p>\n<p>In 2016, Lupe had climbed nearby <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/peakbagger.com\/peak.aspx?pid=-31440\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Skyscraper<\/span><\/a> <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">(4,825 ft.) <\/span><\/strong>from Hatcher Pass under less favorable conditions.\u00a0 She had succeeded then, and Hatch Benchmark should be even easier.\u00a0 The April Bowl trail goes all the way from Hatcher Pass up to Hatch Benchmark passing April Bowl on the way.\u00a0 The trail is only 1.1 miles long, and elevation gain required is only 925 feet, comparable to what Skyscraper had been.<\/p>\n<p>2.25 miles N of Arctic Avenue in Palmer, SPHP turned L (W) on N Palmer Fishhook Road <em>(Willow Fishhook Road on some maps)<\/em>.\u00a0 19 miles later, Lupe arrived at Hatcher Pass.\u00a0 Not everyone had gone to the Alaska State Fair.\u00a0 The pass was packed with people and vehicles.\u00a0 SPHP was lucky enough to grab a parking spot for the G6 at the same little pullout where Lupe had started for Skyscraper last year.\u00a0 <em>(4:37 PM, 58\u00b0F)<\/em><\/p>\n<p>A short, dusty walk W along the busy gravel road brought Looper to the official top of Hatcher Pass.\u00a0 The April Bowl trail started right across the road from the Hatcher Pass monument.\u00a0 The trail began by immediately switchbacking up a hillside of light green vegetation.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_14527\" In 2016, Lupe had climbed the near ridge at Center and followed it around to it to its far end on the R, which is the summit of <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/peakbagger.com\/peak.aspx?pid=-31440\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Skyscraper<\/span><\/a> <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">(4,825 ft.)<\/span><\/strong>. They aren&#8217;t good at being members of the pack.\u00a0 They don&#8217;t understand how to hunt together and help the pack.\u00a0 They just want to be fed and adored for doing nothing, then left alone.\u00a0 They&#8217;re perfectly fine by themselves, and have no social skills other than the ability to train humans to be their servants.\u00a0 Why do you fall for that anyway?<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>I suppose it&#8217;s all the purring, Looper.\u00a0 A purring kitty is hard to resist.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Oh, yeah.\u00a0 Their one magic trick.\u00a0 That noise isn&#8217;t natural, though, SPHP.\u00a0 Nothing else does that.\u00a0 Suspicious, don&#8217;t you think?\u00a0 Something&#8217;s not right about it.\u00a0 Makes me wonder if they aren&#8217;t really handicapped?\u00a0 Maybe they made some deal with someone they shouldn&#8217;t have ever been dealing with in the first place.\u00a0 Maybe if their purrers were exorcised, they would be normal dogs again?<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Normal dogs again?\u00a0 Cats aren&#8217;t dogs!<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Sure they are!\u00a0 Why, we had them in my family when I was born.\u00a0 We were all there, cats and dogs together!\u00a0 One big happy family.\u00a0 We got along fine.\u00a0 That&#8217;s why I understand cats so much better than you do.\u00a0 Cats are just a different sort of dog.\u00a0 Handicapped, like I said before.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Alright, whatever Looper.\u00a0 You win.\u00a0 I&#8217;m just going to hope for a nice day tomorrow like the lucky stars are predicting.\u00a0 You can deal with the passels of lynxes for us.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Good!\u00a0 Remember this &#8211;
