{"id":13908,"date":"2018-07-19T08:10:29","date_gmt":"2018-07-19T14:10:29","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/adventuresoflupe.com\/?p=13908"},"modified":"2018-08-01T22:07:13","modified_gmt":"2018-08-02T04:07:13","slug":"beyond-the-mountain-of-the-midnight-sun-atigun-pass-galbraith-lake-the-edge-of-the-north-slope-8-18-17","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/adventuresoflupe.com\/?p=13908","title":{"rendered":"Beyond the Mountain of the Midnight Sun &#8211; Atigun Pass, Galbraith Lake &#038; the Edge of the North Slope (8-18-17)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>Day 19 of Lupe&#8217;s 2017 Dingo Vacation to the Yukon &amp; Alaska!<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>6:02 AM, 37\u00b0F &#8211;<\/em> The sky had been almost clear before sunset.\u00a0 SPHP expected to wake to blue skies.\u00a0 No such luck.\u00a0 Nothing but gray overhead.\u00a0 Lupe was famished.\u00a0 She gobbled down generous helpings of Alpo and Taste of the Wild before going back to sleep.\u00a0 The Carolina Dog was still exhausted after yesterday&#8217;s <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/peakbagger.com\/peak.aspx?pid=35177\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Cathedral Mountain<\/span><\/a> <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">(3,350 ft.)<\/span><\/strong> adventure.\u00a0 SPHP worked on the trip journal while rain showers came and went.<\/p>\n<p><em>10:15 AM<\/em> &#8211; Loop was awake again.\u00a0 Not raining now.\u00a0 Scattered patches of blue could even be seen.\u00a0 May as well hit the road.\u00a0 Lupe and SPHP left Cathedral Mountain heading N on the Dalton Highway.<\/p>\n<p>As it turned out, Coldfoot (milepost 175) was only half a dozen miles away.\u00a0 SPHP gassed up the G6.\u00a0 Only $4.599 per gallon!\u00a0 Same as last year, and a bargain compared to the $5.50 per gallon they wanted back at the Yukon River.\u00a0 Be grateful for what you can get in the Arctic.\u00a0 Especially when they&#8217;re practically giving it away!<\/p>\n<p>25 miles N of Coldfoot was a thrilling sight.\u00a0 Sukakpak Mountain was dead ahead!\u00a0 Lupe had climbed Sukakpak in 2016.\u00a0 As far as SPHP was concerned, <strong><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Sukakpak Mountain<\/span> <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">(4,459 ft.)<\/span><\/strong> had been one of her most memorable adventures ever!<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_13843\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-13843\" style=\"width: 660px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/IMG_6758.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-13843\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/IMG_6758-1024x768.jpg?resize=660%2C495\" alt=\"\" width=\"660\" height=\"495\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/IMG_6758.jpg?resize=1024%2C768&amp;ssl=1 1024w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/IMG_6758.jpg?resize=300%2C225&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/IMG_6758.jpg?resize=768%2C576&amp;ssl=1 768w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/IMG_6758.jpg?w=1651&amp;ssl=1 1651w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/IMG_6758.jpg?w=1320&amp;ssl=1 1320w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 660px) 100vw, 660px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-13843\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><strong>Sukakpak Mountain<\/strong> came into view 25 miles N of Coldfoot. Photo looks SE.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>However, there was an easy adventure near Sukakpak Mountain that Lupe and SPHP would both love to do again.\u00a0 This part of the Brooks Range was the farthest N Lupe had ever been.\u00a0 In 2016, Lupe had gone on her <a href=\"http:\/\/adventuresoflupe.com\/?p=7414\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>Last Mile North<\/strong><\/span><\/a> adventure.\u00a0 This involved only a relatively short walk along the Alaska oil pipeline to a creek N of <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/peakbagger.com\/peak.aspx?pid=35174\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Dillon Mountain<\/span><\/a> <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">(4,820 ft.)<\/span><\/strong>, then W to its nearby confluence with the Dietrich River.<\/p>\n<p>From that confluence, Lupe had seen a mysterious dark mountain 10 miles farther N.\u00a0 She had seen it the day before from the top of Sukakpak Mountain, too.\u00a0 Not knowing its real name, or if Lupe would ever in her whole life be this far N again, SPHP had named that dark mountain the Mountain of the Midnight Sun.<\/p>\n<p>Both to commemorate last year&#8217;s achievement getting so far N in the Brooks Range, and to celebrate her return, Lupe was going to repeat her Last Mile North trek to see the Mountain of the Midnight Sun again.\u00a0 Upon return, Loop was then going to go farther N than she had ever been before, exploring new territory and shattering her old record.<\/p>\n<p>It was raining again when SPHP parked the G6 at a pullout on the W side of the Dalton Highway right before the bridge over the Dietrich River shortly before noon.\u00a0 After a bite to eat, and finishing catching up the trip journal while Loop napped, the rain was over.\u00a0 Still overcast and cool, but conditions were fine for the Last Mile North trek.\u00a0 SPHP donned a jacket and the rain poncho, and Lupe was underway.\u00a0 <em>(1:01 PM)<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The morning&#8217;s inactivity and early afternoon nap had done Lupe a lot of good.\u00a0 She was ready for action again!\u00a0 She crossed the bridge over the Dietrich River continuing N to milepost 207 on the Dalton Highway.\u00a0 In 2016, a small pullout slightly N of this point was as far N as the G6 had made it.\u00a0 Milepost 207 was exactly halfway along the 414 mile trip on the Dalton Highway from Livengood to Deadhorse at Prudhoe Bay.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_13846\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-13846\" style=\"width: 660px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/IMG_6764.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-13846\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/IMG_6764-1024x768.jpg?resize=660%2C495\" alt=\"\" width=\"660\" height=\"495\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/IMG_6764.jpg?resize=1024%2C768&amp;ssl=1 1024w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/IMG_6764.jpg?resize=300%2C225&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/IMG_6764.jpg?resize=768%2C576&amp;ssl=1 768w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/IMG_6764.jpg?w=1651&amp;ssl=1 1651w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/IMG_6764.jpg?w=1320&amp;ssl=1 1320w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 660px) 100vw, 660px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-13846\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Lupe crosses the bridge over the <strong>Dietrich River<\/strong>. <strong>Sukakpak Mountain<\/strong> is on the R. The <strong>Mountain of the Midnight Sun<\/strong> (Center) is partially obscured by clouds. This was as far N as Lupe had ever been in her whole life. It was wonderful to be back! Photo looks N.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Being back here was an emotional experience.\u00a0 When Lupe had left this place last year, it was with a feeling that she would probably never ever be here to see this fabulous view and the mysterious Mountain of the Midnight Sun again, it was so far N and so far from home.\u00a0 Yet here she was, only a little over a year later.\u00a0 And Lupe had returned as the Most High Exalted Dingo of the Arctic Sisterhood!\u00a0 Being here seemed both so familiar and so natural, yet at the same time strange and incredibly remote again.\u00a0 It was wonderful to be back!<\/p>\n<p>This time was going to be different, though.\u00a0 The plan SPHP had eventually put together for Lupe&#8217;s 2017 Dingo Vacation was that she would indeed return to the Yukon &amp; Alaska.\u00a0 Lupe would come back here, to this very spot, but this time she would go even farther.\u00a0 Lupe was going to continue N beyond Atigun Pass, crossing the spine of the mighty Brooks Range.\u00a0 She was going to see Galbraith Lake beyond the end of the mountains, and climb <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/peakbagger.com\/peak.aspx?pid=-62967\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Lake Benchmark Mountain<\/span><\/a> <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">(5,000 ft.)<\/span><\/strong> where she would have a tremendous view of the North Slope of Alaska.<\/p>\n<p>Yes, Lupe was going to see that distant far N land beyond Alaska&#8217;s last mountain range!\u00a0 The Carolina Dog would get to see the North Slope&#8217;s vast empty boreal tundra extending beyond vision to the Arctic Ocean at the top of the world.<\/p>\n<p>SPHP had learned something since Lupe had last been here.\u00a0 For many months after Lupe returned home from her 2016 Dingo Vacation, SPHP had purposely not looked at the topo maps to see if they showed a real name for the Mountain of the Midnight Sun.\u00a0 Finally though, SPHP did look.\u00a0 Yes, the maps did show a name.\u00a0 The Mountain of the Midnight Sun&#8217;s real name was <strong>Snowden Mountain <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">(6,420 ft.)<\/span><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The topo maps confirmed one other thing.\u00a0 SPHP had hoped Lupe might be able to climb the Mountain of the Midnight Sun if she ever returned, but feared that the mountain was probably too difficult.\u00a0 The topo maps concurred.\u00a0 It wasn&#8217;t likely SPHP would be able to climb such a rugged peak, which meant Lupe never would either.\u00a0 Still, Lupe could drop by for a look at the mountain today when she went by it heading N.\u00a0 A slim chance still existed an ascent might look feasible.<\/p>\n<p>Lupe and SPHP lingered at the confluence of the Dietrich River and the clear stream a while.\u00a0 Loop relaxed on exposed riverbed next to the river, while SPHP pondered this place and this moment.\u00a0 For more than a year, this had been the farthest N Looper and SPHP had ever been.\u00a0 For more than a year, it had been a dream, at first only faintly held, to come back some day.\u00a0 Now, after today, this hike and this confluence would no longer be Lupe&#8217;s last mile N.\u00a0 However, it would forever be a special place.\u00a0 The Carolina Dog and SPHP both loved being here.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_13860\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-13860\" style=\"width: 660px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/IMG_6784.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-13860\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/IMG_6784-1024x768.jpg?resize=660%2C495\" alt=\"\" width=\"660\" height=\"495\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/IMG_6784.jpg?resize=1024%2C768&amp;ssl=1 1024w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/IMG_6784.jpg?resize=300%2C225&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/IMG_6784.jpg?resize=768%2C576&amp;ssl=1 768w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/IMG_6784.jpg?w=1651&amp;ssl=1 1651w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/IMG_6784.jpg?w=1320&amp;ssl=1 1320w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 660px) 100vw, 660px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-13860\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Lupe relaxes on exposed riverbed next to the <strong>Dietrich River<\/strong> with <strong>Sukakpak Mountain<\/strong> in the distance.
