{"id":13018,"date":"2018-04-30T08:10:08","date_gmt":"2018-04-30T14:10:08","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/adventuresoflupe.com\/?p=13018"},"modified":"2018-04-25T22:19:07","modified_gmt":"2018-04-26T04:19:07","slug":"liard-river-hot-springs-provincial-park-british-columbia-canada-8-6-17","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/adventuresoflupe.com\/?p=13018","title":{"rendered":"Liard River Hot Springs Provincial Park, British Columbia, Canada (8-6-17)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>Day 7 of Lupe&#8217;s 2017 Dingo Vacation to the Yukon &amp; Alaska!<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>(5:20 AM, Summit Lake, Stone Mountain Provincial Park, British Columbia)\u00a0 <\/em>Sometime during the night, the evening&#8217;s steady rain quit.\u00a0 Now it was light out, but a dense fog hid everything.\u00a0 Lupe sawed wood peacefully under her blankie, still weary from two long days of mountain climbing.<\/p>\n<p>Can you lick yourself dry?\u00a0 Apparently you can.\u00a0 Loop had done it.\u00a0 The Carolina Dog was toasty warm and felt completely dry, despite having returned to the G6 cold, drenched, and starving after yesterday&#8217;s crazy adventures on <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"http:\/\/peakbagger.com\/peak.aspx?pid=4347\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Mount Saint George<\/a><\/span> <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">(7,402 ft.)<\/span><\/strong><\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>No need to wonder what to do today.\u00a0 A day of rest was in order.\u00a0 A nice long drive, most of it cruising W across southern Yukon Territory was on tap.\u00a0 Should be a fun, relaxing day with plenty of opportunities for quick stops at beautiful places along the Alaska Highway.<\/p>\n<p>SPHP turned the key.\u00a0 The G6 sprang to life.\u00a0 Headlights on, SPHP drove carefully down the slick, wet highway.\u00a0 Summit Pass, the dense fog, and Lupe&#8217;s grand adventures in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.env.gov.bc.ca\/bcparks\/explore\/parkpgs\/stone_mt\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>Stone <\/strong><\/span><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>Mountain Provincial Park<\/strong><\/span><\/a> were left behind.\u00a0 The American Dingo was awake and alert now, not wanting to miss a thing <em>(5:42 AM)<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Lupe and SPHP were still in British Columbia.\u00a0 Loopster would have plenty to do and see before she even got to the Yukon.\u00a0 Her first stop was at a pullout along the Alaska Highway right before the bridge over the Racing River.\u00a0 Lupe had stopped here briefly <a href=\"http:\/\/adventuresoflupe.com\/?p=8527\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>on her way home<\/strong><\/span><\/a> last year, too.\u00a0 She&#8217;d been delighted to find a beautiful short walk along a grassy road hidden in the woods near the river.\u00a0 There were dispersed camping sites, squirrels in the trees, and at the end of the road, a viewpoint next to the gorgeous river.<\/p>\n<p>Not a soul was around.\u00a0 The squirrels were still here.\u00a0 Lupe had a blast!\u00a0 The woods rang with the shrill joy of an enthusiastic Dingo.\u00a0 Only the sky and the river had changed.\u00a0 Last year Loop had been here in September.\u00a0 The Racing River had been a stunning icy blue on a mostly sunny day.\u00a0 Now the river was swollen with silt, a murky light gray color matching the somber sky.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_12957\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-12957\" style=\"width: 660px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/IMG_6099.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-12957\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/IMG_6099-1024x768.jpg?resize=660%2C495\" alt=\"\" width=\"660\" height=\"495\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/IMG_6099.jpg?resize=1024%2C768&amp;ssl=1 1024w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/IMG_6099.jpg?resize=300%2C225&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/IMG_6099.jpg?resize=768%2C576&amp;ssl=1 768w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/IMG_6099.jpg?w=1651&amp;ssl=1 1651w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/IMG_6099.jpg?w=1320&amp;ssl=1 1320w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 660px) 100vw, 660px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-12957\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Lupe at a silty, light gray <strong>Racing River<\/strong>. 11 months ago the river had been a gorgeous icy blue. This is the upper section where the water has been dammed up a bit. It is only a few feet deep. It&#8217;s a tributary of the <strong>Mackenzie River<\/strong>, which ultimately flows N to the <strong>Arctic Ocean<\/strong> at the <strong>Beaufort Sea<\/strong>.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Lupe left British Columbia, entering Yukon Territory before arriving in the small town of Watson Lake.\u00a0 As she continued W, the Alaska Highway sometimes curved back into British Columbia for a while, The day warmed up considerably, hitting 84\u00b0F at one point.\u00a0 Sunlight highlighted beauty everywhere.\u00a0 SPHP stopped at a picnic ground near the Morley River.\u00a0 Lupe had high hopes at first, but didn&#8217;t care for it in the end.\u00a0 Too many biting flies, bees and mosquitoes.\u00a0 Not enough squirrels.\u00a0 SPHP ate and managed to dry out some wet clothing on the G6 before unlike anything Lupe and SPHP had ever seen before.\u00a0 At least that&#8217;s how it seemed at first.\u00a0 SPHP thought for a while.\u00a0 A light finally went on.\u00a0 No, that wasn&#8217;t really true.\u00a0 Lupe had seen this sort of thing before, but never on such a grand scale.<\/p>\n<p>Eons ago, this basin must have been buried beneath a massive glacier of gigantic proportions.\u00a0 Before it melted away, the glacier had scrapped the soil away down to bedrock.\u00a0 The glacier had been thousands of feet deep, so that even the mountainsides had been scraped clear of loose debris to a great height.\u00a0 Yes, that must be the explanation.\u00a0 It all made sense now.<\/p>\n<p>The Carolina Dog seemed satisfied with this hypothesis.\u00a0 A day or two later, while window shopping again in Skagway, she would eventually see a poster of this unusual territory.\u00a0 The poster billed this region as the &#8220;Tormented Valley&#8221;, apparently a popular stop on sight-seeing tours between Skagway and Carcross.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_12995\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-12995\" style=\"width: 660px\" class=\"wp-caption passing Canadian Customs located along the W edge of the Tormented Valley.\u00a0 The highway left the Tormented valley going up over a hill at White Pass, before beginning a long descent into a tremendous, steep, V-shaped valley.\u00a0 This made sense, too.\u00a0 This sharp valley must have been eroded out by a once torrential river fed by the meltwaters of the ancient glacier.<\/p>\n<p>Before she had lost too much elevation, Lupe passed through US customs.\u00a0 She had reached Alaska!\u00a0 Then it was down, down, down the deep, impressive valley.\u00a0 When it all ended, Lupe was practically at sea level.\u00a0 She had arrived in Skagway, Alaska.<\/p>\n<p>Though the sun was long down and twilight had already faded to a considerable degree, Lupe and SPHP took an hour long stroll through Skagway.\u00a0 Perhaps it was only because it was sort of late on a Sunday night, but Skagway struck SPHP as a queer place.\u00a0 However, Lupe seemed happy enough with it.\u00a0 Perhaps she was simply glad to be out of the G6 again for a while, even if no one in this town except SPHP paid the least bit of attention to her.<\/p>\n<p>Skagway seemed possessed of virtually no modern buildings, not even a gas station or a hotel.\u00a0 There was almost no traffic.\u00a0 The dim deserted business section was all touristy shops with an old-fashioned look to them.\u00a0 Posted prices reflected Skagway&#8217;s reputation as a famous tourist destination.\u00a0 Window shopping would be the order of the day here, too.<\/p>\n<p>But everything was closed and dark, except for a few restaurants and bars.\u00a0 Even they were virtually empty and quiet.\u00a0 No crowds anywhere.\u00a0 A few people were out walking about in small groups of 2 or 3 engaged in low conversation.\u00a0 Occasionally someone shot by on a bicycle or skateboard.\u00a0 Everyone was young.\u00a0 The smell of dope rose from small gatherings seated outside old houses.<\/p>\n<p><em>I don&#8217;t know what I was expecting of Skagway, Looper, but this wasn&#8217;t it.\u00a0 This joint is practically a ghost town.\u00a0 Wonder how you get to the ocean?\u00a0 Seems like it ought to be easy to find.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Oh, it&#8217;s over that way, SPHP.\u00a0 I can smell it.\u00a0 Can&#8217;t be too far.\u00a0 Skagway seems fine to me.\u00a0 What were you expecting, anyway?<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Something newer, brighter, livelier, I guess.\u00a0 I suppose that&#8217;s all on the cruise ships.\u00a0 That&#8217;s how most everyone gets here you know.\u00a0 No doubt that&#8217;s why there&#8217;s so little traffic and no place to stay.\u00a0 Everyone&#8217;s on the ships.\u00a0 Looks like Skagway is still selling the gold rush days with all these old timey buildings.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Gold rush!\u00a0 What&#8217;s wrong with that?\u00a0 Maybe we&#8217;ll strike it rich!<br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Oh, nothing.\u00a0 Nothing at all.\u00a0 Except Skagway&#8217;s gold rush has been over for a long time.\u00a0 It&#8217;s interesting history, but we&#8217;re too late to strike it rich.\u00a0 Where is everyone, anyway?\u00a0 It&#8217;s summer!\u00a0 Aren&#8217;t there any cruise ships in port tonight?\u00a0 I didn&#8217;t expect they&#8217;d be rolling up the sidewalks at sundown here.\u00a0 Skagway is famous!\u00a0 Why, even I&#8217;d heard of it.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>It&#8217;s Sunday night!\u00a0 Maybe tomorrow will be different?<br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Perhaps so, Loop.\u00a0 We&#8217;ll know soon enough.\u00a0 Doesn&#8217;t really matter if it isn&#8217;t except for one thing.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>What&#8217;s that?<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>There better be a gas station around here somewhere.\u00a0 It&#8217;s a
