Lupe&#8217;s 3 day journey to climb Squaretop had been a failure, though a terrific adventure. Photo looks NW.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Mount Powell was Lupe&#8217;s next peakbagging objective, but no attempt on the mountain was going to be made today.\u00a0 Late in the afternoon, Lupe and SPHP went down to Deer Lodge where Lupe enjoyed a McDonald&#8217;s ice cream cone.\u00a0 Lupe&#8217;s evening was spent watching boats, sea gulls, geese, and little fish jumping at Georgetown Lake W for Storm Lake on the S side of Hwy 1.\u00a0 Lupe had time, why not check it out?\u00a0 The G6 made it nearly 8 of the 9 miles to Storm Lake on USFS Road No. 675.\u00a0 Lupe and SPHP continued on paw when Lupe arrived.\u00a0 Across the lake Looper could see <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/peakbagger.com\/peak.aspx?pid=55160\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Little Rainbow Mountain<\/span><\/a> <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">(9,989 ft.)<\/span><\/strong>, which didn&#8217;t look like it would be too hard a climb.\u00a0 A trail led across a dam at the N end of the lake.\u00a0 At the W end of the dam, Storm Lake Creek exited the lake.\u00a0 Lupe and SPHP crossed the creek, and followed the trail S along the W side of Storm Lake.<\/p>\n<figure Photo looks E.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The trail continued SE beyond the S end of Storm Lake.\u00a0 Several hikers came along about this time.\u00a0 One of them showed SPHP a map indicating that the trail would wind its way S for a mile or so to Storm Lake Pass.\u00a0 <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/peakbagger.com\/peak.aspx?pid=55163\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Mount Tiny<\/span><\/a> <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">(9,848 ft.)<\/span><\/strong> was supposed to be an easy climb from there.\u00a0 Still feeling lazy, Lupe and SPHP skipped Mount Tiny.\u00a0 Lupe left the trail to circumnavigate Storm Lake instead.<\/p>\n<p>After returning to the G6, Lupe and SPHP spent part of the afternoon at a park along Warm Springs Creek in Anaconda.\u00a0 By evening, Loop was back at the Mount Powell trailhead.<\/p>\n<p><em>Day 13, 7-20-17<\/em>\u00a0 After a day of travel and two days spent lazing around, the Carolina Dog woke up at 5:20 AM.\u00a0 SPHP joined her outside the G6.\u00a0 Today was the big day!\u00a0 Lupe was going to climb Mount Powell!\u00a0 SPHP had everything ready in short order, but then did nothing.\u00a0 Lupe was puzzled.\u00a0 What was the holdup?\u00a0 She was anxious to get going.<\/p>\n<p>Suddenly, those big soft Dingo ears heard a noise.\u00a0 Something was coming!\u00a0 A yet unseen vehicle was approaching the trailhead.\u00a0 A minute later, a silver Jeep Wrangler Rubicon appeared.\u00a0 Lupe ran over barking to greet it.\u00a0 Much to her surprise, out of the Rubicon stepped someone she knew &#8211; mountaineer <a href=\"http:\/\/peakbagger.com\/climber\/climber.aspx?cid=20823\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>Jobe Wymore<\/strong><\/span><\/a>!<\/p>\n<p>Lupe hadn&#8217;t seen Jobe since she&#8217;d served as his advance scout at South Dakota&#8217;s second highest mountain, <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/peakbagger.com\/peak.aspx?pid=6233\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Odakota Mountain<\/span><\/a> <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">(7,200 ft.)<\/span><\/strong><\/span>, back home in the Black Hills.\u00a0 That had been more than 15 months ago.\u00a0 On 4-2-16, Lupe had actually accompanied Jobe to Odakota, and then gone on to the <a href=\"http:\/\/adventuresoflupe.com\/?p=5247\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>Wildcat Hills of Nebraska<\/strong><\/span><\/a> with him that very same day.\u00a0 In Nebraska, she&#8217;d climbed <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/peakbagger.com\/peak.aspx?pid=31730\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Wildcat Mountain<\/span><\/a> <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">(5,025 ft.)<\/span><\/strong> before succumbing to the prickly terrors of cacti.\u00a0 Jobe had helped carry the tenderpaw Dingo out of danger back to the Bluffman&#8217;s house.<\/p>\n<p>Now Jobe was coming with Lupe to Mount Powell!\u00a0 She could hardly believe it!\u00a0 She barked, leapt, and danced wildly around Jobe.\u00a0 Of course, Jobe&#8217;s arrival was no mere coincidence &#8211; it had been prearranged.\u00a0 And actually, Jobe wasn&#8217;t really coming along with Lupe and SPHP.\u00a0 It was the other way around, Lupe and SPHP were tagging along on a mountain that Jobe needed to climb.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/peakbagger.com\/peak.aspx?pid=4873\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Mount Powell<\/span><\/a> <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">(10,168 ft.)<\/span><\/strong>, the high point of Powell County in Montana, is on two massive peakbagging lists Jobe has been working on for years.\u00a0 One list with 245 peaks (<a href=\"http:\/\/peakbagger.com\/List.aspx?lid=831&amp;cid=20823\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>the short list<\/strong><\/span><\/a>!) contains all of the US county high points in all 48 contiguous states with at least 2,000 feet of prominence.\u00a0 The other, <a href=\"http:\/\/peakbagger.com\/List.aspx?lid=8401&amp;cid=20823\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>longer list<\/strong><\/span><\/a> includes all 414 county high points of the western contiguous states (all the mountain states W of the prairie states).<\/p>\n<p>After greetings were exchanged, Jobe, Lupe and SPHP set out on USFS Road No. 670, which was extremely rough W of the trailhead.\u00a0 The road led steadily up the forested valley of the Dempsey Creek drainage.<\/p>\n<p>SPHP&#8217;s prior research of possible routes up Mount Powell had shown that most climbers stay with the road at least as far as the mountain&#8217;s S ridge beyond Bohn Lake.\u00a0 Some go all the way to a SW ridge in the vicinity of the Elliot Lakes.\u00a0 These ridges were described in various reports as brushy, steep, cliffy, and containing boulder or scree fields.<\/p>\n<p>However, climber <a href=\"http:\/\/peakbagger.com\/climber\/climber.aspx?cid=6848\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>Eric Higginbotham<\/strong><\/span><\/a> had explored a different route which sounded a lot easier.\u00a0 The Higginbotham route left the road much sooner.\u00a0 It passed through a huge alpine meadow (Marble Park on the map) early on, climbed in forest to High Point 8708, continued NW over a saddle, and eventually broke out of the forest on a broad ridge a mile SSE of the summit.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/peakbagger.com\/climber\/ascent.aspx?aid=550166\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>Higginbotham&#8217;s 7-19-15 Mount Powell trip report<\/strong><\/span><\/a> included a GPS track, an excellent description of how to find the trailhead, and a rather amusing account of his experience as well.\u00a0 SPHP favored trying Higginbotham&#8217;s route.\u00a0 Jobe must have, too.\u00a0 Being technologically competent, he had already loaded Higginbotham&#8217;s GPS route into his smart phone.<\/p>\n<p>The first thing to watch for was an open grassy slope on the NW side of the road about 0.67 mile from the trailhead.\u00a0 The steep hillside soon came into view as Higginbotham had described it.\u00a0 Jobe and Lupe led the way up.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_12421\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-12421\" style=\"width: 660px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/IMG_5691-e1515765645967.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-12421\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/IMG_5691-e1515765645967-768x1024.jpg?resize=660%2C880\" alt=\"\" width=\"660\" height=\"880\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/IMG_5691-e1515765645967.jpg?resize=768%2C1024&amp;ssl=1 768w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/IMG_5691-e1515765645967.jpg?resize=225%2C300&amp;ssl=1 225w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/IMG_5691-e1515765645967.jpg?w=1650&amp;ssl=1 1650w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/IMG_5691-e1515765645967.jpg?w=1320&amp;ssl=1 1320w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 660px) 100vw, 660px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-12421\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Jobe &amp; Photo looks W.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>At High Point 8708, Lupe had already climbed 2,450 feet of the over 3,900 feet of elevation gain required to get to the summit of Mount Powell from the trailhead.\u00a0 SPHP was amazed at how easy it had all been, and how quickly the time had gone by.\u00a0 Credit for the easy route went to Eric.\u00a0 Credit for making the time go by fast went to Jobe.<\/p>\n<p>Lupe and SPHP really didn&#8217;t know Jobe well at all.\u00a0 The only other time Lupe had been with Jobe was on that one day over 15 months ago.\u00a0 Jobe had been friendly, considerate, and very kind.\u00a0 He&#8217;d come to Lupe&#8217;s rescue carrying her over cactus infested badlands in Nebraska.\u00a0 Jobe had also been a great conversationalist, expounding upon a variety of topics of interest to SPHP.<\/p>\n<p>Shortly after leaving the trailhead this morning, Jobe had launched into a discussion of one of his favorite subjects &#8211; Jerry Garcia and the Grateful Dead.\u00a0 Of course, SPHP was familiar with some of their top 40 hits, but that was about the extent of it.\u00a0 Jobe, however, was an expert.\u00a0 He didn&#8217;t consider the Dead&#8217;s top 40 hits even remotely among their best work.<\/p>\n<p>Virtually the entire time it took to reach High Point 8708, Jobe had expounded upon the Grateful Dead.\u00a0 A truly dedicated (fanatical?) fan, he listens to them almost exclusively.\u00a0 Jobe knew not only all of the Dead&#8217;s songs, but how the songs had evolved and been perfected over time, at exactly which live concerts Jerry Garcia had performed the best renditions, all of the lyrics and their meanings, etc., etc.<\/p>\n<p>SPHP couldn&#8217;t begin to absorb it all, but did gather that of the many Grateful Dead songs Jobe liked, he considered <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=LN0-gUohb9I\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>Morning Dew<\/strong><\/span><\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=k77EE3a7DUg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Terrapin Station<\/span><\/strong><\/a> among their finest work.\u00a0 Even though the subject matter was almost entirely unfamiliar to SPHP, Jobe&#8217;s enthusiastic and lively conversation had been so entertaining, it hardly seemed possible Lupe was already so close to Mount Powell.<\/p>\n<p>Close she was, though.\u00a0 Only a 0.75 mile long forested area, a significant portion of which was a relatively level saddle, now stood between Loop and the broad, bare S ridge leading to the final steep climb to the top of the mountain.\u00a0 As Lupe left High Point 8708, and proceeded NW across the saddle,\u00a0Jobe continued his time and distance warping commentary.\u00a0 In no time at all, almost as if she had been teleported, the Carolina Dog broke out out of the forest and stood on the bare S ridge.<\/p>\n<p>The lower part of the S ridge was a gentle incline, generously strewn with medium-sized flattish rocks, which were interspersed with small green plants and a few wildflowers.\u00a0 Mount Powell was directly ahead.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_12427\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-12427\" style=\"width: 660px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/IMG_5699.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-12427\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/IMG_5699-1024x768.jpg?resize=660%2C495\" alt=\"\" width=\"660\" height=\"495\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/IMG_5699.jpg?resize=1024%2C768&amp;ssl=1 1024w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/IMG_5699.jpg?resize=300%2C225&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/IMG_5699.jpg?resize=768%2C576&amp;ssl=1 768w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/IMG_5699.jpg?w=1651&amp;ssl=1 1651w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/IMG_5699.jpg?w=1320&amp;ssl=1 1320w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 660px) 100vw, 660px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-12427\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">In the lead, Jobe strikes out across Mount Powell&#8217;s nearly flat, barren S shoulder.
