(7-15-17)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>Day 8 of Lupe&#8217;s 2017 Dingo Vacation to the Wind River Range, Wyoming &amp; Select Peaks in Montana<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Before the sun was up, Lupe wanted out of her &#8220;tiny house&#8221;.\u00a0 SPHP unzipped the door and let her go.\u00a0 The Carolina Dog must have slept well.\u00a0 She hadn&#8217;t been so perky last evening after her long trek to Porcupine Pass from Lower Green River Lake.\u00a0 SPHP dozed a bit longer.\u00a0 When SPHP finally emerged, Loop was busy watching 3 deer and a marmot.<\/p>\n<p><em>Sweet!\u00a0 Having a great time watching wildlife, aye Looper?<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Oh, yes!\u00a0 It turns out this Porcupine Pass is a terrific spot.\u00a0 Don&#8217;t make any sudden movements, and please be quiet so the deer don&#8217;t run away!<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Sorry, but we&#8217;ve got to get going, Loop.\u00a0 Today&#8217;s the big day.\u00a0 Squaretop Mountain or bust!\u00a0 Before we head for New Benchmark, want to take a stroll up Porcupine Pass Peak for a better look at what we&#8217;re facing?<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Sure!\u00a0 Let me know when you&#8217;re ready.\u00a0 I&#8217;m going to keep watching these deer till then.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/peakbagger.com\/peak.aspx?pid=34110\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Porcupine Pass Peak<\/span><\/a> <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">(10,890 ft.)<\/span><\/strong> is a barren hill on the SW side of Porcupine Pass.\u00a0 Lupe gained less than 200 feet of elevation on her way to the top.\u00a0 The stroll was an easy one, free of obstacles except for a steep snowbank just below the rim of the summit area.\u00a0 Fortunately, the snowbank wasn&#8217;t large.\u00a0 SPHP found a way around most of it.\u00a0 The snow presented no problem at all to the American Dingo, who powered her way right on up, chomping snow for moisture as she went.<\/p>\n<p>The top of Porcupine Pass Peak proved to be a large, gently rounded area, carpeted with green alpine plants.\u00a0 Not a tree or bush anywhere.\u00a0 Medium-sized rocks laid thinly scattered across the field.\u00a0 In every direction, Lupe gazed upon magnificent mountains and huge valleys.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_12258\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-12258\" style=\"width: 660px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/IMG_5609.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-12258\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/IMG_5609-1024x768.jpg?resize=660%2C495\" alt=\"\" width=\"660\" height=\"495\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/IMG_5609.jpg?resize=1024%2C768&amp;ssl=1 1024w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/IMG_5609.jpg?resize=300%2C225&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/IMG_5609.jpg?resize=768%2C576&amp;ssl=1 768w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/IMG_5609.jpg?w=1651&amp;ssl=1 1651w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/IMG_5609.jpg?w=1320&amp;ssl=1 1320w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 660px) 100vw, 660px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-12258\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Looking down Porcupine Creek valley from Porcupine Pass Peak. Photo looks NE.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Beauty was everywhere, but the view to the E from Porcupine Pass Peak was disconcerting.\u00a0 Beyond Porcupine Pass, Lupe had her first good look at <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/peakbagger.com\/peak.aspx?pid=19877\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">New Benchmark<\/span><\/a> <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">(11,850 ft.)<\/span><\/strong>.\u00a0 The mountain was bigger, higher, and considerably more rugged than SPHP expected.<\/p>\n<p>New Benchmark was the first of two major obstacles Lupe would face on her intended route to <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/peakbagger.com\/peak.aspx?pid=5341\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Squaretop Mountain<\/span><\/a> <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">(11,695 ft.)<\/span><\/strong>.\u00a0 Once safely past it, she would reach more favorable terrain on the way to <strong><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Peaks<\/span> <a href=\"http:\/\/peakbagger.com\/peak.aspx?pid=17010\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">11,820<\/span><\/a><\/strong> and <strong>11,590<\/strong>.\u00a0 The second obstacle she would come to was a steep drop down to a narrow saddle leading to <strong>Peak 11,415<\/strong>.\u00a0 If Loop could cross that saddle, the remaining 1.5 miles N to the summit of Squaretop should be relatively easy.<\/p>\n<p>Easy?\u00a0 Too funny!\u00a0 Staring only at maps, SPHP had been optimistic Lupe wouldn&#8217;t face anything more serious than a long ridge walk to get to Squaretop Mountain from Porcupine Pass today.\u00a0 Now that the Carolina Dog was actually here, staring at the reality of New Benchmark, it was clear nothing about this was going to be easy.<\/p>\n<p><em>Come on, Loopster!\u00a0 We&#8217;ve got a gargantuan day ahead of us.\u00a0 We&#8217;d best get on with it!<\/em><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_12263\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-12263\" style=\"width: 660px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/IMG_5614.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-12263\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/IMG_5614-1024x768.jpg?resize=660%2C495\" alt=\"\" width=\"660\" height=\"495\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/IMG_5614.jpg?resize=1024%2C768&amp;ssl=1 1024w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/IMG_5614.jpg?resize=300%2C225&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/IMG_5614.jpg?resize=768%2C576&amp;ssl=1 768w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/IMG_5614.jpg?w=1651&amp;ssl=1 1651w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/IMG_5614.jpg?w=1320&amp;ssl=1 1320w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 660px) 100vw, 660px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-12263\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">New Benchmark from Porcupine Pass Peak. However, she could see over both the chasm and the ridge for a good look at <strong>Gannett Peak<\/strong> (on far L), the highest mountain in Wyoming. Photo looks NE with lots of help from the telephoto lens.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The news wasn&#8217;t good, though.\u00a0 To get to Squaretop Mountain, Lupe needed to be able to get from New Benchmark over to easier terrain near <strong><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Peak<\/span> <a href=\"http:\/\/peakbagger.com\/peak.aspx?pid=17010\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">11,820<\/span><\/a><\/strong> to the E.\u00a0 Cliffs eliminated any possibility of going directly E or SE, but the topo map showed Lupe ought to be able to go down New Benchmark&#8217;s NNE slope and reach a saddle leading E.\u00a0 This route shouldn&#8217;t be any steeper than the route Lupe had taken up New Benchmark.<\/p>\n<p>Lupe started down New Benchmark&#8217;s NNE slope, only to discover a huge, long snowbank wrapped around the N and NE side of the mountain.\u00a0 The snow curved steeply away out of sight.\u00a0 How far down the snow went, and how steep it became was impossible to tell.\u00a0 Unequipped, SPHP wasn&#8217;t willing to walk out on the snow far enough to tell.\u00a0 A slip might easily become a rocket slide hundreds of feet onto deadly rocks below.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_12281\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-12281\" style=\"width: 660px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/IMG_5632.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-12281\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/IMG_5632-1024x768.jpg?resize=660%2C495\" alt=\"\" width=\"660\" height=\"495\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/IMG_5632.jpg?resize=1024%2C768&amp;ssl=1 1024w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/IMG_5632.jpg?resize=300%2C225&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/IMG_5632.jpg?resize=768%2C576&amp;ssl=1 768w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/IMG_5632.jpg?w=1651&amp;ssl=1 1651w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/IMG_5632.jpg?w=1320&amp;ssl=1 1320w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 660px) 100vw, 660px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-12281\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Looking for a way over to the Peak 11,820 area, Lupe went partway down New Benchmark&#8217;s N slope. expected, but it should have worked.\u00a0 If this snowbank wasn&#8217;t here, I still believe we would have been able to scramble down this slope easily enough and continue E.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Would we have made it to Squaretop then?<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Not sure, but we certainly could have gotten a lot closer.\u00a0 Once beyond New Benchmark, it looks like a cinch to get at least as far as Peak 11,590.\u00a0 Beyond that, who knows?\u00a0 Can&#8217;t tell from here.\u00a0 Maybe there isn&#8217;t a safe route across the saddle to Peak 11,415?\u00a0 That would have been the last real obstacle, though.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>So now what?\u00a0 Are we beaten?<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Looks like it, Loopster.\u00a0 We&#8217;re staring at defeat here as far as Squaretop Mountain is concerned.\u00a0 Weather&#8217;s looking kind of iffy, anyway.\u00a0 Even if we could continue on, it might not be the smartest thing to spend the rest of the day sauntering around on exposed mountaintops.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Well, don&#8217;t take it too hard, SPHP.\u00a0 We made it to New Benchmark, didn&#8217;t we?\u00a0 That was a peakbagging victory.\u00a0 New Benchmark is a splendid mountain, wouldn&#8217;t you say?<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Oh, yes, indeed!\u00a0 New Benchmark is awesome!\u00a0 It&#8217;s a grand consolation prize as your peakbagging goes.\u00a0 Still, as far as our original intentions went, this day has been a small victory, and a major defeat.\u00a0 Had my heart set on Squaretop Mountain for you.\u00a0 Thought we would be there today.\u00a0 Really did.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Oh, whaa, whaa!\u00a0 Get over it, SPHP.\u00a0 Look at where we are, high in the glorious Wind River Range!\u00a0 Let&#8217;s have fun!\u00a0 We going back to Porcupine Pass now?<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Yeah, I suppose we better.\u00a0 No sense arguing with reality in the mountains, especially mountains as big as the Winds.\u00a0 Onward, sweet puppy<\/em>!<\/p>\n<p><em>Now you&#8217;re talking!\u00a0 Maybe the deers and marmot will still be there?\u00a0 I hope so!<\/em><\/p>\n<p>By the time Loop made it around to the W side of New Benchmark to start the first big descent, a storm could be seen approaching.\u00a0 The surprising thing was that it was coming from the W where the sky had been relatively clear, instead of from the E.\u00a0 The storm was quite some distance away, so it appeared the Carolina Dog still had time to carry on for a while.<\/p>\n<p>Halfway down to the saddle leading to the false summit, suddenly the whole sky turned gray.\u00a0 Clouds were forming directly overhead.\u00a0 Light rain fell.\u00a0 More was certainly on the way.\u00a0 Continuing down the mountain, SPHP started looking for a place where Lupe could take shelter.\u00a0 Some tall rocks with a slight overhang was all that was on offer.\u00a0 Lupe reached this refuge moments before the downpour began in earnest.<\/p>\n<p>It rained hard for half an hour, with pea-sized hail thrown into the mix toward the end just for fun.\u00a0 Lupe was fairly well protected by the little overhang.\u00a0 The Carolina Dog emerged from the experience only a bit damp.\u00a0 SPHP, however, was thoroughly drenched.\u00a0 Only SPHP&#8217;s head and shoulders had been spared.<\/p>\n<p><em>Ha, ha!\u00a0 Look at you, SPHP!\u00a0 For once, you&#8217;re the drowned rat.\u00a0 Usually I&#8217;m the soggy doggie!<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Heh, that was a bit more refreshing than it needed to be, alright.\u00a0 Come on, Looper, let&#8217;s move it!\u00a0 The storm isn&#8217;t over yet.\u00a0 Let&#8217;s get down to the saddle during this break.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Good idea.\u00a0 I remember some really big rocks down there.\u00a0 We can find a better place to hide!<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Stray raindrops continued falling all the way down to the saddle.\u00a0 Lupe was right about the big rocks.\u00a0 The saddle featured a collection of huge boulders all jumbled together.\u00a0 Loop and SPHP found a much larger overhang, almost like a cave.\u00a0 Not a moment too soon, either.\u00a0 No sooner was the American Dingo safe inside than the next downpour began.<\/p>\n<p>This time it didn&#8217;t rain quite as hard.\u00a0 A cold wind blew instead.\u00a0 Another shot of pea-sized hail fell.\u00a0 The cave wasn&#8217;t very big.\u00a0 It would have been considerably more comfortable, if the ceiling had been higher and dripped less.\u00a0 SPHP sat scrunched over on a small rock, watching water trickle down the wet ceiling, while Loop stared out of the cave.\u00a0 Hopefully it would all be over soon.\u00a0 This wouldn&#8217;t be such a great way to spend the night.<\/p>\n<p>After 20 minutes, the rain tapered off.\u00a0 A small patch of blue sky appeared.\u00a0 Lupe watched the patch grow for 10 minutes before it seemed safe to venture out.\u00a0 Scattered raindrops carried on the breeze continued falling as Lupe and SPHP headed SW toward the false summit.\u00a0 By the time Lupe was there, the rain was over.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_12283\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-12283\" style=\"width: 660px\" class=\"wp-caption
