on the Clarks Fork of the Yellowstone River (7-11-13)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Lupe&#8217;s 2013 Dingo Vacation was off to a great start!\u00a0 On her first day (7-10-13) she had been to the <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong><a style=\"color: #ff0000;\" href=\"http:\/\/adventuresoflupe.com\/?p=842\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Elysian Fields of Puppy Happiness<\/a><\/strong><\/span> and spent the night on Bald Mountain in the Bighorn Mountains of Wyoming.<\/p>\n<p>It had been quite a memorable evening\u00a0for Lupe sleeping under the stars on Bald Mountain.\u00a0\u00a0 &#8220;Sleeping&#8221; is used loosely here.\u00a0 At first there was some sleeping going on, but a\u00a0few hours into the night, SPHP woke up suddenly to the sound of Lupe sprinting away to the W in the darkness.\u00a0 She was after something, but what it might have been SPHP had no clue.\u00a0 Before long she came back without being called.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_853\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-853\" style=\"width: 660px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Bald Mountain<\/a><\/strong><\/span> <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>(10,042 ft.)<\/strong><\/span>, Bighorn Mountains, WY on 7-10-11.\u00a0 The summit is kind of faded out on the left.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>SPHP managed to get\u00a0Lupe\u00a0in her blankie and sleeping bag again, but from then on\u00a0Lupe and SPHP\u00a0slept fitfully.\u00a0 SPHP\u00a0awoke many times\u00a0to hear Lupe wandering off into the night sniffing around.\u00a0 Sometimes she was gone for 5 minutes or a bit more, but she always came back.\u00a0 Still, SPHP spent long stretches awake, peering and listening into the darkness for the tinkling sound of the tag on Lupe&#8217;s collar.<\/p>\n<p>The Milky Way above was magnificent.\u00a0 Three shooting stars streaked across the night sky.\u00a0 A breeze started up and blew all night.\u00a0\u00a0Initially it seemed to be from the E, but as the night wore on, it blew harder and more from the S.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_860\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-860\" style=\"width: 660px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/P1040854.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-860\" id=\"caption-attachment-860\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">But I&#8217;m not sleepy!!!!<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Sometimes Lupe came around to just sit next to\u00a0SPHP out of her sleeping bag.\u00a0 She\u00a0wanted to be petted while she stared into the blackness listening and watching.\u00a0 SPHP always did pet her.\u00a0 Often SPHP managed to persuade\u00a0Lupe to get\u00a0back into her\u00a0sleeping bag and under her blankie again.\u00a0 That would last for a little while and then she would be off running and sniffing again.\u00a0 It was the first time\u00a0Lupe and SPHP\u00a0ever slept together without a tent under the stars in the wild.\u00a0 Lupe was just too stimulated and excited to sleep much.<\/p>\n<p>Lupe and SPHP\u00a0got up when the sun was just getting up.\u00a0 It was gorgeous out except for the strong S breeze.\u00a0\u00a0 SPHP added Lupe&#8217;s name to the place of names.\u00a0 Then Lupe and SPHP\u00a0went back to the summit of Bald Mountain again before heading down to the G6.\u00a0 Lupe had a great time racing around through the yellow, purple, and white flowers and what SPHP called &#8220;pom pom&#8221; plants waving in the breeze.<a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/P1040856.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large everything packed up.\u00a0 Lupe and SPHP\u00a0headed W down spectacular Hwy 14A out of the Bighorns.\u00a0 Lupe barked frantically at cows and horses across western Wyoming.\u00a0\u00a0 Lupe&#8217;s route went through Lovell, Powell and Cody, WY.\u00a0 She rode in air-conditioned comfort since it was hot outside &#8211; almost 90\u00b0F.<\/p>\n<p>From Cody, SPHP took Hwy 120 N to the Chief Joseph Scenic Byway, Hwy 296.\u00a0 When Lupe reached the Beartooth Hwy No. 212, SPHP made a beeline for Lupe and SPHP&#8217;s favorite camping site on the Clark&#8217;s Fork of the Yellowstone River.\u00a0 Lupe and SPHP had discovered this\u00a0prime spot\u00a0on Lupe&#8217;s 2012 Dingo Vacation with Lanis.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1167\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1167\" style=\"width: style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>Peaks<\/strong><\/span> from Lupe&#8217;s favorite camping spot on the Clark&#8217;s Fork of the Yellowstone River<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Lupe and SPHP were in luck!\u00a0 Arriving at 1 PM, the favorite camping site was open.\u00a0 SPHP had the tent set up within 30 minutes.\u00a0 As it later turned out, not a moment too soon.\u00a0 After setting up the tent, SPHP was ready to take Lupe for an afternoon outing.\u00a0 Nothing really long, just for a few hours.\u00a0 SPHP chose a nearby trail up Pilot Creek.<\/p>\n<p>As Lupe and SPHP got out of the G6 at the Pilot Creek trailhead, some people in a big white pickup truck pulling a trailer\u00a0loaded with ATV&#8217;s drove up.\u00a0 They asked if Lupe and SPHP were tenting across the road.\u00a0 SPHP said yes, and they said they were from Cody, WY.\u00a0 Lupe and SPHP were in their favorite spot to camp.\u00a0 (You know you are in a good spot when the locals think it is the best one, too!)\u00a0 They asked if it would bother Lupe and SPHP, if they camped nearby.\u00a0 Lupe and SPHP had no problem with that.\u00a0 It&#8217;s still a free country.\u00a0 They didn&#8217;t need Lupe\u00a0and SPHP&#8217;s\u00a0permission, although it was considerate of them to ask.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1169\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1169\" style=\"width: 660px\" id=\"caption-attachment-1171\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Set up on the Clark&#8217;s Fork of the Yellowstone, July 11,\u00a02013<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Lupe and\u00a0SPHP started up the Pilot Creek trail.\u00a0 At first Pilot Creek was visible below, but the trail climbed steadily so fast\u00a0Lupe was\u00a0soon far above the creek.\u00a0 Before long there were\u00a0views of the snow-capped Beartooth Mountains to the N.\u00a0 The trail went uphill so long\u00a0SPHP decided they should have named it Pilot Peak trail, as\u00a0the trail seemed\u00a0destined to climb it.\u00a0 (That SPHP, what a whiner and exaggerator!\u00a0 No wonder Lupe has to call her blog <strong>The <em>(MOSTLY)<\/em> True Adventures of Lupe!<\/strong>)<\/p>\n<p>Just about the time\u00a0SPHP was considering giving up and turning around, the trail leveled out and started a more gentle up and down, so\u00a0Lupe stuck with it.\u00a0Lupe and SPHP\u00a0were in a big valley up on the W side hundreds of feet above the creek.\u00a0 There was a big mountain a few miles away with a large snow bank on it, and the trail headed for that.<\/p>\n<p>Lupe and SPHP had\u00a0covered about 1\/2 the distance to\u00a0the big mountain\u00a0and arrived\u00a0at a small open hill on the left side of the trail.\u00a0 Except for one big dead old tree, it was open ground.\u00a0\u00a0Lupe and SPHP climbed the little hill to gain, for the first time, an unobstructed view of the mountain with the big snow bank.\u00a0 Pilot Creek was now closer than before, not as far below Lupe and SPHP as it had been.\u00a0 A side creek with good flow\u00a0was cascading very steeply into Pilot Creek from the E.\u00a0 It originated from a high rocky ridge with some snow\u00a0still present way up\u00a0near the top.<\/p>\n<p>Unfortunately\u00a0SPHP\u00a0had forgotten the camera.\u00a0\u00a0Lupe and SPHP had gone a few miles\u00a0along Pilot Creek trail.\u00a0 The sky was clouding up like it was going to rain.\u00a0 With no camera and rain coming, it was time to turn around.\u00a0 The trip back to the trailhead was pleasant and very easy, since it was nearly all level or downhill.\u00a0 Lupe had a good time barking at chipmunks.\u00a0 SPHP enjoyed the view of the Beartooths, which were now directly ahead instead of behind.\u00a0 It was a great\u00a0welcome back to the Beartooths.\u00a0\u00a0Lupe and SPHP met absolutely no one on the trail the entire time.<\/p>\n<p>Back at the Clark&#8217;s Fork of the Yellowstone River, there was no sign of the people from Cody.\u00a0 They must decided they weren&#8217;t going to be happy camped next to Lupe and SPHP.\u00a0\u00a0SPHP arranged all of\u00a0the padding, blankets, and sleeping bags in the tent, then started making beef stew on the propane stove.\u00a0 Before the beef stew was even ready, it started raining lightly.\u00a0 Lupe and SPHP devoured the beef stew as soon as it was done.\u00a0 It was starting
