{"id":12032,"date":"2018-01-24T08:10:42","date_gmt":"2018-01-24T15:10:42","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/adventuresoflupe.com\/?p=12032"},"modified":"2019-03-25T23:08:52","modified_gmt":"2019-03-26T05:08:52","slug":"wind-river-peak-wyoming-part-3-tayo-lake-to-the-summit-7-11-17","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/adventuresoflupe.com\/?p=12032","title":{"rendered":"Wind River Peak, Wyoming &#8211; Part 3: Tayo Lake to the Summit (7-11-17)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>Day 4 of Lupe&#8217;s 2017 Dingo Vacation to the Wind River Range, Wyoming &amp; Select Peaks in Montana<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Lupe wanted out.\u00a0 SPHP unzipped the door of her &#8220;tiny house&#8221;, and she vanished into the night.\u00a0 A nearly full moon hung over the mountains bathing the world in a ghostly glow.\u00a0 It was late, very late.\u00a0 Hours of light rain showers were over.\u00a0 Fortunately, the tiny house and everything in it had escaped being drenched.\u00a0 The clear sky was a welcome sight.<\/p>\n<p>SPHP scanned nearby terrain tying to pick out the Carolina Dog.\u00a0 She was nowhere to be seen.\u00a0 Many secrets remain concealed beyond the pale power of moonlight to reveal.\u00a0 SPHP listened.\u00a0 Nothing but a soft breeze sighing.<\/p>\n<p>Ten minutes later, she came racing back all out of breath.<\/p>\n<p><em>Out having adventures in the night without me, aye Looper?<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Maybe.\u00a0 A short one.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Want to tell me about it?<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Nope, gonna go back to sleep now.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Smart.\u00a0 You&#8217;ll need some of that energy for Wind River Peak in the morning.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>SPHP zipped the door of the tiny house shut as soon as Lupe was in.\u00a0 Best get as much shuteye as possible.\u00a0 Dawn couldn&#8217;t be more than a few hours away.<\/p>\n<p>The moon was gone the next time Loop wanted out.\u00a0 Sol blazed well above the horizon.\u00a0 Morning!\u00a0 This was it!\u00a0 Breakfast.\u00a0 Final preparations.\u00a0 Everything ready.\u00a0 The great moment arrived.\u00a0 Now or never!\u00a0 Wind River Peak or bust!\u00a0 Lupe and SPHP headed N abandoning the tiny house.\u00a0 Nothing but up, now!\u00a0 2,000 feet should about do it.<\/p>\n<p>Lupe, who had been too tired to eat yesterday evening, was chock full of energy and ambition.\u00a0 She ran this way and that sniffing around big rocks.\u00a0 No squirrels, today!\u00a0 The American Dingo was already above tree line.\u00a0 SPHP was feeling the effects of the thin air, and two long days struggling to get to base camp above Tayo Lake.\u00a0 At the top of the first steep rise, SPHP paused to catch breath.<\/p>\n<p>The S slopes of <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/peakbagger.com\/peak.aspx?pid=5399\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Wind River Peak<\/span> <\/a><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">(13,192 ft.)<\/span><\/strong> were directly ahead.\u00a0 The way up seemed straightforward enough.\u00a0 Just keep climbing while avoiding any steep snow.\u00a0 Lupe would work her way NW to gain a S ridge that looked snow-free all the way to the top.\u00a0 It would be a long boulder hop, but that was OK.\u00a0 American Dingoes are great scramblers!\u00a0 Nothing was in view that should prevent Lupe from reaching the summit.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_11990\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-11990\" style=\"width: 660px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/IMG_5493.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-11990\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/IMG_5493-1024x768.jpg?resize=660%2C495\" alt=\"\" width=\"660\" height=\"495\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/IMG_5493.jpg?resize=1024%2C768&amp;ssl=1 1024w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/IMG_5493.jpg?resize=300%2C225&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/IMG_5493.jpg?resize=768%2C576&amp;ssl=1 768w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/IMG_5493.jpg?w=1651&amp;ssl=1 1651w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/IMG_5493.jpg?w=1320&amp;ssl=1 1320w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 660px) 100vw, 660px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-11990\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Lupe pauses for a look around early on. She had spent the night on a broad flat part of a ridge 400 ft. above <strong>Tayo Lake<\/strong>. She&#8217;s already higher than that here. One of the high points along the ridge must be <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/peakbagger.com\/peak.aspx?pid=64998\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Continental Tower<\/span><\/a> <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">(12,088 ft.)<\/span><\/strong>. The terrain was like this the rest of the way to the summit. Long, slow, but nothing too scary or difficult at all! Photo looks NNW.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>SPHP joined Lupe at the top of the mountain.\u00a0 The sky was a bit hazy, whether due to smoke or humidity was hard to say.\u00a0 Even so, the views were simply superlative!\u00a0 SPHP congratulated Lupe on her peakbagging success, and shook her paw.\u00a0 For 10 minutes, Loop and SPHP sat in the wind up on the highest rocks, while SPHP stroked her soft ears and fur.<\/p>\n<p>It wasn&#8217;t noon yet, but seemed like time for at least a snack.\u00a0 Lupe and SPHP got down off the summit rocks, and took shelter from the wind next to them.\u00a0 While Lupe devoured Taste of the Wild, SPHP had a Cliff bar, then searched around for a survey benchmark shown on the topo map.\u00a0 Nothing.\u00a0 SPHP couldn&#8217;t find a Nalgene bottle that was supposed to contain a summit register, either.<\/p>\n<p>Puzzling.\u00a0 Wasn&#8217;t this the summit?\u00a0 It seemed obvious that it was.\u00a0 There were a couple of competing high points that didn&#8217;t look too much lower, though.\u00a0 One was to the E and the other along the W edge of the summit area.\u00a0 Better have Loop check them out, too, just in case.<\/p>\n<p>Yeah, that was a good idea.\u00a0 Lupe had discovered a pika living among the summit rocks and was chasing it.\u00a0 The pika knew its home well, and had an easy time avoiding the Carolina Dog bent on its destruction.\u00a0 Completely fascinated by the elusive pika, Lupe was racing and bounding around oblivious to monstrous cliffs only a few feet away.\u00a0 Better put a swift end to this merry chase before it was Dingo overboard and the pika scored a victory!<\/p>\n<p>Lupe found nothing among the large rocks at the E high point.\u00a0 Since she was close to the E edge of the summit area, she went a little further to check out the views over there.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_12003\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-12003\" style=\"width: 660px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/IMG_5508.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-12003\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/IMG_5508-1024x768.jpg?resize=660%2C495\" alt=\"\" width=\"660\" height=\"495\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/IMG_5508.jpg?resize=1024%2C768&amp;ssl=1 1024w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/IMG_5508.jpg?resize=300%2C225&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/IMG_5508.jpg?resize=768%2C576&amp;ssl=1 768w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/IMG_5508.jpg?w=1651&amp;ssl=1 1651w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adventuresoflupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/IMG_5508.jpg?w=1320&amp;ssl=1 1320w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 660px) 100vw, 660px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-12003\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Lupe near the E end of the summit area. SPHP didn&#8217;t want to get wet feet crossing streams and marshes to go the rest of the way.
